    Modelled Rocks

    Hey, I was taking a look at some of id's levels. For the large rocks and cliffs (and ground.. :P) outside, I couldn't select a single face of the structure, only the entire thing. It's as if the entire thing was one solid brush.. were these made within the doom3 level editor, or are they modelled in another program (lightwave?) and then imported? I ask because I'm wondering what's the best way to make a rocky surface instead of a boring flat cliffwall :P

    Things I didn't like.. I thought the shotgun should have spread a little less and therefor been able to kill imps that were a little further away. The neverending imp-teleporting-behind-you gag. Gotcha! For the 1,700th time! It became routine.. the further I got the more correctly I guessed when they would spawn. Actually, hell, you don't even _need_ to guess. Every battle I got in, I would turn around and backtrack a bit, thinking "Man, they aren't going to do that again, are they?" Sure enough they did.. every time. Other than that I was very impressed with the game. [And I had high expectations ;)] Sure, it was a little dark, but hey, that's doom3's niche.

    Confused about some textures

    I've been wondering, why do so many textures appear "blank"? i.e. there is no preview for them.. Are they 'alpha' layers or maps or something?

    So everytime I see a different texture, it's a different brush, correct? Even a flat floor is broken up into different brushes to allow you to change the texture? That's my biggest problem right now -- choosing textures. Maybe my floors are just too large, but they look like checkerboards of repeated textures.

    Using Doom editor, is there a way to 'explode' sectors? i.e. Can I split one sector up into many smaller ones?

    AHH! These things are great!! How do I make one 'tesselated', though? I'm just using "Simple Patch Mesh.." from the menu, and it just asks for a width and height before generating one.

    I'm working on e3m1, but bringing it up to date is driving me nuts. The hole you start out in; I wanted to use the 'spinalcrap' texture and have you climb up out of there on a modelled ribcage. It's...hard..

    Yes! I don't think it likes my compy machine, because it crashes after I've done ~20 minutes of work without saving. :P

    That does help :) So a patch mesh just kindof spreads vertices all over the face of a brush?

    That's a great idea. Once extracted, you could even just 'view as thumbnails' in explorer.

    Vertices

    Why do my vertices have so much trouble snapping to the grid? I've made a hexagon, hollowed it out, and I'm trying to move the walls apart so that they don't overlap. Well sometimes my vertices will do as they're told. Other times they don't move at all when I'm clicking and dragging. (Even though it should be a rather simple move.. just extending by one grid block..) Twice now the editor just crashed when I was trying to line up my vertices. This is driving me fucking nuts.

    Yeah, that works sometimes, but othertimes it makes the entire brush disappear and a few times it has crashed doom :) It generally doesn't like me playing around with the vertices of anything, though. Sometimes it just refuses to move when I tell it too. Othertimes, even though I've moved all of the vertices and they seem to be fine, when I look at certain faces of the brush, there are crisscrossed lines that don't belong and the texture turns white.. It's difficult to describe, I'll take a screeny next time it happens ;)

    Yeah. So they used lightwave, eh? I can't see how it could be done within the editor.. clipper is the only thing I've found to make things less boxey but it's not very useful for detailed 'carving'.

    When you drag out a red box, you're creating a brush. The faces of a brush can be textured.. so they're the floors, walls, etc.. You can also create a brush to hollow out sections of other brushes (subtract) or select other brushes.

    Try turning antialiasing off within doom3.

    Grid coords not showing up

    In my doom 3 editor, grid coordinates aren't showing up within my "Z" or "XY Top" etc.. windows. How do you turn them on?

    Do you not know what I mean? In video's I've watched, when stretching out a brush something like this shows up along the sides, in red:      8  ------- |        | I get the red line but no size :P
