D3 boots, loads, and crashes. Help, anyone?

I feel like an idiot. I was just about ready to reinstall XP when I realized there was something I hadn't tried yet; I went and deleted the cfg file for Doom. It worked. :-) Now with it back up and running, I'd like to say thanks for all the help, you guys (regardless of wheher it worked or not.) ...and thanks in advance for all future assistance.

D3 boots, loads, and crashes. Help, anyone?

I don't think it really has anything to do with the hardware; it ran perfectly fine at 800x600 w/o any issues. It just started crshing out of the blue for no discernable reason. Also, I regularly check for spyware with Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, and Webroot's Spy Sweeper, so I highly doubt it's an issue. Each time I ran it while it was working, I made a point of shutting down all superfluous processes and SysTray programs via the task manager, and all of my hardware is at the default clock speeds as well, so I think I'm majorly screwed. On another note, I tried to upgrade my BIOS earlier, and after flashing it successfully, I coldn't boot into XP; I got to a command prompt, but no further. I reverted to the old BIOS version and XP booted normally, but now my integrated sound hardware won't work. For some reason the mixer got disabled, or deleted, or something... Any help with either problem would be greatly appreciated.

Now I need the full model so when I get a car I can have it detailed. ;-) Hellknight: Am I detecting sarcasm?

D3 boots, loads, and crashes. Help, anyone?

It's an ASUSTek P4B-LX, P4 1.6Ghz Willamette CPU, and my god-forsaken ATI-made 9600SE to go with it. This thing is ancient; doesn't even have DDR RAM in it. It all came in the Sony Vaio(!) that my parents INSISTED on getting in 2001 because it came with a video camera. Of all the stupid reasons... Anyway, I've tried everything I could think of (upgraded all the drivers on the PC, flashed the M-board bios, etc.) and it still doesn't work. Looks like I may have to reformat and reinstall XP. I hope HL 2 and Halo 2 aren't this big of a headache.

D3 boots, loads, and crashes. Help, anyone?

Well, My vmem is set to 2GB, D3 is updated , DirectX is updated, and my video card has been restored to the factory clock; none of them worked, however. Got anymore ideas?
  6. OK People, I've got major problems goin on: everytime I start Doom, it goes strait to the loading picture with Mars burning and the Id logo, loads the game, initializes the menus, and BAM! the game shuts down. I reinstalled, but to no avail, and installed the softmod drivers with the same result. I then switched over to the Omega drivers, but that didn't help, either. I finally managed to get it to load to the console by adding +com_allowConsole 1 in the shortcut properties, but when I try to load a save game or demo from there the game crashes. Also, I have the gamma boosted in the game, and so when the game crashes the gamma stays boosted on the desktop and I have to go switch it back in the display properties. I do have the video card oc'd (9600SE), but its never given me any trouble before, and Far Cry (and everything else) still runs perfect. The whole game was running fine until a few days ago, and I have no ideas left. Any suggestions? And btw, stay the hell away from the 9600SE's; I think it stands for S**t Edition.
