    Lets talk about Episode 3: Inferno

    I really like E3M1-E3M3, with Pandemonium being my favorite of those. Mount Erebus is also a nice map, but for me it is also the incarnation of a major problem I have with all the E3 maps; Layout and gameplay-wise they are nice (Except E3M8 wich would be quite lame if it wouldn't introduce the new monster) and although the overall design is quite creepy and surreal, the textures and their combinations mostly don't work well and end up looking like a random mish-mash of colors for me... again, E3M6 is propably the best example for this.

    This is looking so awesome, can't wait to play it! One question though; will the Grabber gun and the artifact from ROE make an appearance? I hope not to be honest... they made the game far too easy IMO.

  5. IMO it is more or less trivial what graphic editor you're going for, as I think you can achieve the same results in each of those. It just depends on what you're more comfortable with... Personally I'm always using simple MSpaint for making sprites (textures is a different story), I have been using it 10 years ago and I'll propably use it until I die :P As for tutorials; I found that they can definitely be a help to point you into the right direction, but there is nothing better than exercise and keep trying and trying ;)

    Claustrophobia 1024 has been released

    I'm at map21 now and I really like it so far... good job everyone! For me it's still surprising how much fun can be crammed into an accessible space of 1024*1024 units. Especially map20 by Dutchdevil is impressive... somehow the map feels so much larger than it really is!

    NewDoom Community Project 2 Released

    Wow, Map01 is really nice (as expected), but Map02 is lagging like hell and I was unable to play it at all! I took a quick look at the 3rd map, but the extremely cramped layout and the IMHO unnecessary switch-hunts made me quit... Maybe I'll pick the wad up later.

    Well, although the sprites may be based on the Baron (actually the Cybruiser to be precise), every single pixel has been replaced. Sure the overall pose of the upper body is mainly the same, but among other things the legs are done completely from scratch! Just compare it for yourself... I think the name is quite fitting for this monster... too bad a lot of people will propably automatically associate it with Arnie and the Terminator movies :P

    Favorite enemy from the beastiary.

    I think my favorite is among anything from Eriance, like the Vulgar, Wicked or Cybruiser, wich are all of great quality. I can't choose only one though... One enemy I also really like is the Catharsi! Although it may not have very original sprites and besides the fact, that it is based on a Q3A character, I think it works surprisingly good within Doom's enviroment. Its way of attacking is quite unique (although maybe a little overpowered) and the way it drops the detonator upon death is just cool IMO. It's so much fun luring demons into soon exploding bombs :D Btw, feels good to see that my monsters seem to be well accepted :)

    There has been a long discussion about this issue when KDiZD was in the making and honestly, I'm not entirely happy about the solution that was chosen. I think it would have been way better to rearrange the monster placement in a way to avoid most of the problems (wich is certainly possible!) instead of disabling infighting and thus taking away an IMHO major factor what makes Doom the great game it is. Anyway, reworking the gameplay would propably have taken another few month, wich neither most of the team and propably a lot of potential players wouldn't have welcomed... I'm positive things will work out way better with TSoZD though!

    Custom Monster and Weapons Award Thread

    It has been done; check out Eriance's Cybruiser! You should find it either in the revamped E1 of Demon Eclipse (don't know if it has been released to /Idgames yet though) or Tormentor's Bestiary side. Btw, speaking of the Cacolich: I'm working on a (IMHO) better looking version of it... I'm quite sure that it will take some time to finish those sprites though, as it isn't my main priority ATM.

    Plutonia 2 bugs ?

    There seems to be an invisbile obstacle in front of a computer console in map10 (x 1607 y -370). I don't know what is causing this, but perhaps it's a nodebuilder issue? I'm playing with zdoom 2.2.0 btw!

    Wow... I kind of hoped that Thunderpeak would get at least a mention in the Cacowards, since Scuba made some positive comments about it, so I'm more than happy it even won an award :) I would have never expected to become mapper fo the year though... I'm a bit speechless ATM and also busy with trying to prevent my ego from exploding :P Anyways, many thanks to Doomworld, everyone involved in putting up the Cacowards, especially Scuba Steve of course and the whole community in general!
  20. Looks sexy! However, this light structure in the second screenshot could need some more work IMHO... maybe adding some sort of support beams at the ceiling to break up the texture?

    About the "tool-wielding" demons; While I agree, that it might not be the most fitting thing for the Phobos setting, I like to think of them just as other infested creatures! After all, the demons infested humans wich also still hold their weapons, so who says that hell's forces didn't invade other races and planets in the past and included the posessed members of these species into their army? I guess it's all about how open minded you're about expanding the Doom-universe beyond what is given to us through the original material! I for myself love to think about this kind of stuff...

    Thanks for that Enjay :) One of the reasons why the Shadow may look undoomy to you is the fact, that it's actually the first monster I drew entirely from scratch! I for myself am not completely satisfied how it turned out as well, because although I always try to stick to Doom's artwork as closely as possible, my own "style" comes through in anything I make... not necessarily a bad thing I guess. If you compare the shadow sprites with an Imp for instance, you will still see differences in terms of style, even more if you take a closer look :P Anyway I think it worked out well enough after all! Concerning the Hellwarrior; I made more or less in a rush and although I've been happy with it back then, I also think this isn't one of my best sprite works. However, I still like the idea of the lion head and the shield!

    Thanks for the review Ismaele! The unidentified thing that is mentioned in the article is a custom monster I forgot to remove btw. Stupid me for only testing the map in UV again :(
