  1. Hello everyone!

It has been more than a year since my last post and honestly that is how long it has been since I really last peeked into the community. It is really interesting how things and I have changed since that time a year ago and honestly I like the future I am headed into. Things have been quite fortunate for me and honestly most days of the week I smile and am filled with joy. Do not give up your dreams, because they might just come true when you least expect them to.

I hope all of you have a successful and happy future! <3

Hi there RestlessRodent. You obviously don't know me but i lurked around here back in your active days. I just wanna say hi, and thank you for your contributions to the community (especially programming). Glad to see you happy, and thanks once again for dropping by!

Also cheers for being a fellow Roguelike fan.

  2. Hello, I am going to say that I am transgender (MTF) and that I prefer to go by she/her.

I know it has been 2 months since I last posted and I will say that I did move on although sometimes I do think about the Doom community from time to time as I have been a part of it for 12 years. I suppose in a way it is kind of like an old home you no longer live in that you pass sometimes on your trip to work every once in awhile. Here I am just knocking on the door one more time.

I hope all of you have a successful and happy future!

I hope you too have a successful and happy future!! Even though I don't know you, we are part of the LGBTIQ+ community and we should spread love and positivity with each other and the rest of the world. So, take care and never let hate and prejudices get into you, always stay true to yourself!

  3. Hello everyone, this is RestlessRodent (they/them/their) where I used to go by
the name of GhostlyDeath. I am writing this as
a goodbye. I will no longer be a part of this community and I will not be
working on ReMooD any more. I will be honest and say that for the past few
years I have not really been a part of it at all. Personally I have gone
through some rough times and it was really tough. However now I have seen
where I can be happy and be myself. I have also accepted myself and who I am
and I no longer want to be afraid of myself. It is a great feeling. To be
honest, I have felt much pain here and I am going to let it go. I have changed
so much since I first started being in the community. For those of you who I
had spent time with, I enjoyed it. I do know that I have been quite abrasive in
the past which has rubbed people the wrong way. I want to apologize for this
and I hope you can forgive me. I have met many friends here and I want to thank
all of you for being as such, continue being awesome! It is time that I accept
that ReMooD is a failure of a source port. I have rebooted it so many times in
the past with rewrites, feature creep, and other such things. The goal post I
kept setting has always been out of reach. Even if I set the post to a closer
point it is still out of reach. At this point I barely work on it and I just
never have the heart to work on it at all. Probably my most successful project
was one that I never really intended to be successful in the first place, which
is ChocoRenderLimits. Basically it was created to help Esselfortium in
developing her rather ambitious vanilla level set. Since this project is still
so useful to people I have handed it away. It is something that something you
want to be successful fails completely but something you never intended to be
in the first place was. One thing I encourage is to learn programming so that
you too can experiment on source ports. Hacking Doom has really helped me
increase my skill level because the effect of what I did had a fun result. I
would say that if you do have a hobby project, keep it fun and not a hobby.
However, do consider things like refactoring and burn out in mind. It might be
tough at first, but believe in yourself and you can do it. To level designers,
keep designing levels because you are pretty awesome at it. To be honest I have
not played a new WAD in years.

If you are asking yourself why? I have only just been in with my foot keeping
it open for the chance to come back for the past few years. A few times I
reached in with my knee but it always went back to the foot. So I am going to
close the door now and move on.

I will ask that in the future, please do not bother me about ReMooD or
    ChocoRenderLimits.

Thank you and may our paths potentially cross in the future!

Sad to see you go; thank you for everything you've contributed. I'm glad to hear that you've learned something from your source port hacking - really it's personal growth and experience that's the most important thing of all, rather than any notion of "success" or fame. I wish you all the best for the future.

  4. This is a test of the activity feed thing. This concludes the only test.

  5. I have not been around for probably 1-3 years (never really paid any attention to the duration) apart from a few postings, did not follow anything that happened in Doom.

From what I can initially tell from glancing:

    • Doom 2016, Doom 1993 is still better though.
    • ZDoom no longer developed.
    • Doomworld Forums potentially going to enter 2017 and leave 2000.
    • Some (who I will keep unnamed, because I am not 100% sure) are/may be transitioning genders, I hope that it brings you happiness.
So what has gone on Doom wise and Doom community wise? And how are things with yous?

Also I have changed my alias from GhostlyDeath to RestlessRodent, I have had my former alias since 2003 (14 years) and I am pretty much a completely different person now.

  7. I'm planning on building a 10 disk RAID consisting of RAID60, 5 disks per set with two sets.

The disks will all be 2TBs in size and will be jam packed into a computer case.

This should give me about 12TB of space with the possibility of having 2 failed disk with a fully working RAID. 3 failures gives me 83% and 4 failures gives me 67%.

    code:
    Array
    Any thoughts on this?

I have a 3 x 2TB Disk RAID, which I use for all my downloaded stuff - IE stuff I can reacquire. Has 1TB free, and I struggle to fill that.

My main drive (SSD) gets backed up to it, then eventually I move to an offline disk.

I have a single 1TB disk for Steam and other games I dont want on my SSD. Again, not worried terribly if I loose that.

If I were Ghost, I'd just setup a RAID/JBOD and add disks as needed. Cheaper as others mentioned. Or get a DROBO (id love one, but dont want to pay the price when I could build myself)

    3. Super Jamie

      Super Jamie

The problem with all this is, by the time the first drive fails, the other drives will be approaching their MBTF. With each disk you add, you increase your chance that another disk will die during the rebuild and basically make the whole lot useless.

You are spending $1800 on disks, plus the PC and RAID controller, plus a case with adequate PSU and cooling, probably to hold pirated movies and shows which you'll never have the time to watch even if you spent the rest of your free time forever doing so.

Take that 2 and a half grand, and buy what you actually want on DVD instead.

If you insist though, I would mirror the lot, twice, and make a filesystem on each abstracted block device to minimise data loss, either due to disk failure or filesystem corruption.

      code:
      Array
And for the love of god, do this with a proper (ie: Adaptec) hardware RAID controller, or Linux software RAID. Software RAID is probably preferable, as it just abstracts block writes. Following the above scheme, you could power down, take all the DISK1s and put them in another PC, and your 4 filesytems should appear without a problem.

    4. RestlessRodent

I'm planning on cutting down the disk count to at most 8 (since the case is too small for all those disks).

I can get the disks for $100 each, no tax, free shipping. The system board is just an Intel Atom D2700 (don't need an i7 just to store files), and the controllers are a SIL and a Matrox. The case has a whole bunch of 120mm fans however.

Most Movies and TV shows suck, why would I waste my time watching that garbage? I also don't pirate stuff. And if you start to think about software, I use Debian.

DVDs are a pain in the ass, before I watch them I rip them on my existing file server and stream it. Easier to watch rather than having a DVD drive dangling off a USB port.

Don't watch Movies, TV shows, or Anime.

I already use PCI/PCI-e cards with hardware RAID support, but I always use them as single disks and then utilize software RAIDs. This is because mdadm is consistent as most hardware RAIDs cannot be used if you were to switch a card for another vendor.

  8. A song always played at the supermarket where I worked but it fell out the loop once holidays came around and they changed all the songs. Coworkers knew not what song it was, they only knew every other song.

    Here's a MIDI: https://sites.google.com/site/ghostlydeath/song.mid?attredirects=0&d=1

It's sung by a female singer and has alot of "Woah-oh-oh Woah-oh-oh" in it.
