  1. blogpost 2020 edition: not rona'd or dead for other reasons, also gonna rant a bit

You would have noticed that I was active again during the most part of 2015 if you were paying attention to the ZDoom/Zandronum forums, but then significantly decreased my online presence to almost nothing - reason being is that I ended up switching jobs in October 2015 (went back to a full-time job that I had previously quit as I was offered a higher salary with a promise of two raises within 12 months) and stayed there until I was made redundant in mid-2019. That job had mentally drained the hell out of me (constant 50-60 hour weeks without overpay or time in lieu, never got those raises but given the circumstances of why there was financial issues at that company, I'm not angry about the lack of raises) and has put me off wanting to work permanent jobs indefinitely. It also threw me into a deep depression due to the massive amount of stress, but I got through that period with mostly playing board games with friends as I barely wanted to touch my desktop PC while I was working full-time. Much prefer the contract life where I can blaze through some project, had an easy 3-month contract job late last year that was great. Started job-hunting again in mid-February this year as the IT market is naturally dead from Christmas to early-Feb, but unfortunately some pandemic decided to go global a month later and the job market went to shit. Right now I'm waiting to hear back on a contract job opportunity that I was shortlisted for and had a phone interview, so hopefully that leads to some real income again!

So with this year being as it is with social isolation being the main theme, I've been spending a lot of time this year doing some long-needed cleaning - physically, virtually and mentally. It's been utterly fantastic to have either thrown out or sold a lot of unneeded physical cruft, and that's mostly done though I do need a little bit more shelving to properly organise some misc belongings. I don't think I'll ever organise my hard drives 100% to my liking since I've been accumulating 20 years of crap and have minimized data loss, but it's certainly better than the haphazard mess it was and having a GlusterFS clustered network storage using ODROID-HC2 nodes and a Netgear GS748Tv3 that I scored for free from the last contract job (which I modded with 40mm Noctua fans) is an incredibly cost-effective way of having scalable redundant storage, so I can worry even less about data loss short of a catastrophic disaster. Getting back to a good mental state has been challenging, but at least it's going in the right direction and that's always A Good Thing™.

With all that in mind, I'm looking forward to get back in the swing of Doom things and hopefully stay around for much longer than my last attempt in 2015, prioritising on OMGWPNS and Endless Survival along with jamming some DM/CTF map layouts that I may or may not release depending on whether I'm satisfied with them. I also want to revamp the map I made for DUMP 3 (MAP30) as I was hit hard by time constraints and work dominating my time. I've been setting up some streaming equipment and I'm aiming to get up and running on Twitch within 2-3 weeks. Focus is to do Doom stuff at least once a week on Sunday at around midday (2AM UTC) and other stuff on Monday/Wednesday/Friday night (tentative) mostly focusing on Amiga and going through my huge GOG backlog, but also some Mega Drive, PS1/PS2 and XBox stuff. As for playing competitive DM/CTF, there's an extremely low chance of that happening since repetitive strain injury had screwed my right wrist over in 2015 and I don't know if I can ever get back to a skill level that I'd be happy with. Who knows, I need to git gud again in general anyway so we'll see how that pans out.

The biggest challenge for my stream setup though is ironically my desktop - I refused to migrate to Windows 10, after I had bought a new Vega 56 GPU last year and fatally killed it three months later (due to uhh... modding it a bit too much) I ended up switching to Linux with a total hardware swap (as my i7-2600 was getting long in the teeth and my Radeon 7790HD had mysteriously died while my Vega was in use - the Ryzen 3700X is a beast and the RX 570 is a damn good GPU for its value) and eventually settled on Gentoo of all distros as the freedom of customising packages is far better than dealing with binary distros and their shortcomings, and compiling with the 3700X is an absolute breeze. Unfortunately there's still a few nagging issues here and there - neither Odamex or PrBoom appear to play MIDIs, (and something is a bit screwy with modifying the PrBoom config in general) the Zandronum Linux binaries don't play nice with Wayland at all in that using the mouse makes it crap out hard, and Wayland support in OBS is still very much WIP where recording at 60 FPS results in either severe jitter or frame drops ranging from 16% to 40% depending on the PC game for almost all instances - this is a non-issue with X11, but I'll take Wayland over the screen tearing, input lagging and microstuttery mess that is X11. Fortunately the HDMI capture card I have works great with Linux and OBS has no issues recording that at 60 FPS, and I can easily get away with streaming Doom at 30 FPS even if it's a bit below 35 FPS. Hopefully Zandronum will compile fine and will play nicer with my system, otherwise I can always resort to running the Windows binaries through WINE as they work fine, though it does make Doomseeker a bit more of a pain to use. Oh yeah, also need to figure out how to get SLADE to work properly without needing to resort to Flatpak.

That's essentially what I've been up to in a nutshell!

    1. deathz0r

      deathz0r

A bit of digging around and sorting out the Odamex and PrBoom MIDI problem was fortunately easy, just needed to set the SDL_SOUNDFONTS environment variable - that's one step closer towards having my stream setup ready, woo! PrBoom still keeps nuking its config file 90% of the time though, going to need to debug and file a bug report on GitHub once I've pinpointed the issue.

  2. Deathz0r, is it OK if i release a mod of OMG Weapons? I know that you updated it yourself, but what i have in mine is quite different.

For one, the mod is fully compatible with ZDoom 2.1.4, Skulltag, all Zandronum versions, and in the future it will be compatible with ZDaemon and Eternity.

And second, i'm rebalancing the mod almost completely and adding new content, right now it's just a new pistol and Doom 1 compatibility fixes, but it's a start.

    1. deathz0r

      deathz0r

      sorry, was afk

Skulltag seems redundant to support, do people actually still use that port? I don't even know (nor really care) about the state of ZDaemon, so I'm interested to see what you plan to do there.

Have you been modding based off V5, or the old release on /idgames? V5 has partial Eternity support (as at the time of the release there was no support for custom weapons) but I wouldn't be surprised if there's been improvements in monster behaviour since that release that I can make it closer in feature parity with the DECORATE version.

Ultimately I can't stop you (nor do I intend to) on releasing your mod of OMGWPNS, but the only thing I ask is that it's not considered an official continuation, as I've been doing minor tweaks here and there over the past three years since last release, though I'm definitely intending to become far more active this year and will be intending to release a new version at some point, as I'm planning to do a massive overhaul of the spawn system and implement more agitated versions of monsters.

  3. Keep the nomination thread clean by posting all your other crap here!

No, I'm not involved with the Cacowards in any way. I just saw a need and filled it.

EDIT: Changed the link, as the official Cacowards nomination thread is now in Wads & Mods. John Smith requested that the official thread be kept clear of discussion so I guess this thread is still needed.

  4. A survival-horror dungeon crawl.

    - Emphasis on authentic horror.
    - Absence of weapons or defense.
    - Slower player movement.
    - Randomly-generated dungeons.
    - Death by starvation.
    - Situational dynamic music.
    - Multiplayer compatible.

Quite different from your average project, but I've already devoted myself to finishing it. All aspects are already functional, with the target port being ZDaemon and Skulltag. Just wondering what sort of attention this may generate and what concerns people might have about the project. Feel free to inquire about anything in particular.

I actually had an idea brewing in my head back in 2007 that involved "randomly" generated dungeons, which was basically having a bunch of 96x96 square sectors and scripts that created seeded rooms by lowering ceilings/raising walls to create walls. I would love to see this happen

Enough about Doom. What are you up to, deathz0r? How are you doing?

It's 5am and I'm sleep deprived and I'm looking forward to my first day of work since I've been on leave for the past two weeks (as part of Australian law regarding full-time work) so I'll quickly summarize as "I got out of my bedroom, socialize with people who are just as deranged as myself, threw myself into a twenty grand debt for an IT course of dubious value that promised a guaranteed job within four months, got myself a job due to the course a year after it had finished and have been slowly paying it back since."

Right now I'm looking to moving out of home so I can live a lot closer to Melbourne as I spend three hours a day going to and from work, but I only just noticed that I need to throw down a bond and the first month of rent in advance, and I currently only have enough money for the bond. Looks like I'll need to get myself another loan!

I'll respond to the rest when I can actually think straight, but there's a lot of interesting stuff (plus I know about ReMooD and the current /newstuff review system, since the fact that I stopped doing the regular reviews had caused the current system to exist)

Needless to say, I want to write about Goddamn guns as well as build them. So yeah, uh, I guess that's just another thing I am tacking on the 5 Year Plan list.

  7. i'm making something intentionally retro for quake, because the theme is to timewarp myself back to 11 years ago from exactly today and create the best damn mod i can with the stuff available at the time
    here's a boss fight

and here's a web site (HEY, THAT RHYMES!)

you may think of this as a jokewad or something well guess what guys it is not.

    - 24 new weapons for quakeguy planned (I already got 8 of them done and working)
    - at least 5 new characters with their own weapon sets
    - a new episode, it may not be good but i'm going to choke a glquake on this one since it was common to have glquake-breaking mods made before glquake's release. (doomers this could be your break into brush mapping for the first time lol)
    - 20 skins for quakeguy, some with their own sounds
    - designed for stock dos quake 1.08, remember that WinQuake/GLQuake weren't quite out in feb 97 (a beta of winquake was briefly though)

If you think this sounds way too ambitious then you're wrong, i've done bigger projects than this

edit: lol, my postcount is 1997, what a coincidence, and how appropriate

  8. After almost seven years of cable, I've decided to jump the sinking boat (it sucks ass here in Australia) and move to ADSL. While it would be really fucking sweet to have ADSL2+ (because unlike most people I talk to, I actually want a decent upstream speed) I don't see that happening in the near future due to my location. Anyway, having twice the upload speed than cable and unlimited upload bandwidth is a godsend (more videos to upload! yay), but I haven't adjusted to having my downstream reduced to 1/8th of cable yet. It's not that I'm impatient or anything, it's just a new experience for me, very much similar to how I went from dial-up to cable back before I had pubes and being shocked at how fast everything went.

Another thing that also shocked me is that it took only three business days from ordering ADSL to catching up on everything that I've missed out on, especially when it said it'd take somewhere between five to ten business days to confirm my Direct Debit details, which has apparently not been received yet even though I sent it via email on the same day I ordered ADSL. Oh well, free internet I guess!

Oh, and I also have a 80gb limit now, divided into "peak" and "off-peak hours". For $30 extra, it was well worth gaining eight times the bandwidth limit and not having the downloading and uploading combined into one limit!

No, it doesn't explain why I've been "dead" for three weeks. Yes, I do have a lot to catch up on for /newstuff. No, it probably won't be done by this Sunday since I also finished my four week holiday last Sunday and I need to get back into my routine at waking up at 6am and trying to care enough for that Website Dev/Networking certificate that I'll probably never put into good use anyway.

Huh, around here DSL is crap unless you're sitting on top of the hub. If you are, go with it, but otherwise cable is a lot faster. I hate to say it, but this Comcast I'm paying for is the fastest internet I've ever had, and it's almost worth the whole $60.

Unfortunately I'm living a mere 10 kilometres away from obtaining 24000/1024 ADSL2+ with a 50gb limit for about $80AU. It sucks having to live on the brim of urban Melbourne.

While cable does have excellent download speeds, the shitty upload speeds and how expensive it is doesn't make up for keeping it any longer.

  11. I'd been wanting one of those bastards for a while. Problem is, I'm too much of a cheap bastard to buy one. Not at full price anyway. Then the other day I notice that they've lowered the price to $169.99. I figured what the hell; I'm working full time and have a little extra cash to spend.

I mentioned this thought of mine to a friend at work shortly thereafter, who responded with a "Well, hell, I got a PSP I can sell you for fifty bucks!"

He brought it to work on Wednesday; I bought it from him on Friday. I had to buy an AC Adapter, which I did Thursday and played Need for Speed Most Wanted until three in the morning. I don't usually like racing games, but Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit was one of the first games I played on the first PlayStation so this one was a trip down memory lane as the controls felt right.

Anyway, here's the lowdown on what's in the picture:

    A) $50 - PlayStation Portable, 1 GB Memory Stick Duo (with 174 songs and 1 porn wallpaper), 2 Games (NFS:MW and Siphon Filter)
    B) $7 - PSP Power Adapter
    C) $20 - Pelican PSP Starter Kit (Case, 2 UMD holders, 3 ft. USB Cable, Car Power Adapter, Wrist Strap, Screen Guard)
    D) $30 - Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories

With tax, about $110. Hell, I'll take it.

He's bringing me Siphon Filter Monday. I didn't know how I would like GTA:VCS but now that I've gotten used to the controls, it's a lot of fun. I formatted the memory stick, restored the defaults, figured out how to transfer data between the PSP and PC and updated the system BIOS (I was on 2.81; the current update was version 4.30). Who needs manuals?

Anyway, I like the PSP. The little bugger has a lot of potential. The battery holds out really damn good; I played for damn near six hours straight. The screen quality is good and bright. The sound is good. The whole thing is easy to use and relatively user friendly (especially with the newest update). This isn't going to turn me into a Sony fan boy by any means, but I'm fed up with my XBox and can't take my computer with me in the car, plus I've already decided I won't buy a PS2 ever.

    I'm pleased with it.

So, what are your opinions on the PSP?

  12. So, I'm at least a month late on doing this, but here's the official release thread for my debut album, A Terrible Flood.

    (cover artwork by Steve McNamara)

A Terrible Flood is a 74-minute album, containing 18 songs of various styles, including breakbeat, downtempo, IDM, and drum'n'bass. Major influences include Boards of Canada, fat jon, Moby, Joe Boyd Vigil, and many others.

Is this a spam post? No way! Even if you have no interest whatsoever in purchasing A Terrible Flood and supporting your friendly neighborhood esselfortium, there are five free songs from it that you can download from this here link!

If you like the completely free music you've just listened to and want the full experience, it can be purchased from CDBaby.com! It's just like shareware, only not anything like shareware at all actually! :D

Our very own Killingblair and Hobbs are satisfied customers. Tell me, would anyone truly not want to join these noble ranks?

But don't take my word for it! Here's what other people are saying about A Terrible Flood:

This is quite impressive. I can tell that you've got musical skills and the pieces are sonically interesting. There are a variety of styles on the album, yet a certain musical passion remains consistent throughout. It's almost like there are several albums compiled into one. There's a range in there between Nalpordyh to Skybox that's really moving - I like the short interesting vignettes.
    - Kurt "Peff" Kurasaki, author of Power Tools for Reason 3.0 (peff.com)

There's so much energy in it; you can really hear you love what you're doing. [...] This album doesn't sound derivative of anything, it sounds like you're just having a blast making electronic stuff. [...] Really varied but works really well, everything sits together in a brilliant context.
    - Tom "Stompp" Pritchard, producer

If you like melodies, breakbeats, emotion, or all 3, check this one out — you’ll be happy you spent the money.
    - Justin Smith, flawedLOGIC.org (full review at http://flawedlogic.org/2007/02/23/esselfortium-a-terrible-flood-great-road-trip-tunes)

I have listened to a wide variety of electronic music in various flavors. Essel's CD, even in its formative stages, caught my attention. Surprisingly listenable, constantly undergoing revision, A Terrible Flood is a genuine -- and successful -- effort. Featuring songs in the classic sample tradition (The Airport) to darker and more ambient moments (Chilled), A Terrible Flood may not break new ground but stakes its territory among other works in its genre assertively.
    - Omer Ikizler, satisfied customer

Fantastic, absolutely fantastic. It is not often that you find good music these days, A Terrible Flood is one of those exceptions. It has emotion, flow, ups, downs, soft bits, hard bits, and all sorts of other bits. And it all comes together smoothly and seamlessly into an album that is definetly just a little more than bip boop noises for the masses.
    - Hobbs, troll with really huge guts

    Good music is good.
    - Killingblair

Naturally this event needs several things, community members to help, donations to purchase prizes and suggestions on what to have take place. So far I've considered...

    Prize suggestions

    • id anthology
    • Doom 3
    • Gameboy DS w/GBA Doom
    • Quake Wars: ET (if it happened to be released by the summer)
    • Reaper minis
    • Action Doom Merch!!
    • Date with Kaiser (subject to availability)
    • XBox w/Doom3 and/or Resurrection of Evil
    • Nintendo64 w/Doom64
    Competition/Contest Suggestions
    • Odamex Tournament
    • Speedmapping Contest
    • Wad Making contest (1024/sector limit/etc)
    • Speedrunning/demo Competition
    • Quiz Contest
I don't know why I feel like pulling this together, maybe because I want to give something back to the Doom community, but also to breathe a little life into Doomworld.

Don't mong up this thread :P I want serious suggestions and input on whether there is enough interest to generate enough donations to have worthwhile prizes... and enough people to help organize events.

I could use with a DS, not sure about the contest though. They're all interesting choices but Odamex would only work well in a specific geographical region.
