Right. For a long time I thought the Lovecraft bosses and monsters were John Romero's idea. Sandy Peterson was and is probably the most underrated member of id's team during those golden years.
-
No, sorry - I meant to say their ideas were scrapped during the development of Quake 2. Hence the "Strogg" storyline.

The original Quake was a mish-mash of three different game designs - John Romero wanted to do a medieval action RPG/FPS, Sandy Peterson wanted to do a Lovecraft-inspired horror action FPS, and American McGee and Tim Willits wanted to make a sci-fi/horror FPS, just like DOOM. The design is so unsettling and unique almost by accident - sort of like if you dumped three killer games in a blender. The original design called for more than two Lovecraft bosses. The others were scapped due to time constraints and J. Carmack's impatience. After Romero and Peterson "resigned" their ideas and designs were scrapped and Willits/McGee took the series in the sci-fi/horror direction.

Music that sounds like it belongs in Doom
youspeakmylanguage replied to Koko Ricky's topic in Doom General Discussion
The ambient Quake-like music included in DOOM:CPE and Final DOOM PSX is the only music I can stand to listen to while playing DOOM. Anything else is just distracting. Of course, I prefer playing DOOM on my PS1 anyway... -

TOP: 1) Greatest computer game ever. 2) Greatest computer game ever. 3) Greatest computer game ever. BOTTOM: 1) Cyberdemon more challenging and fun than Spider Mastermind 2) Baphomet was a wall texture, even if blowing up Romero's head was an inspired idea. 3) Only one new weapon in DOOM II Yes, I know all three of these were already mentioned...
