If we want classic DOOM, then we should play classic DOOM!
DeumReaper replied to Intel17's topic in Doom General
Regardless of how different Doom 4 could turn out to be, I consider Doom 64 to be the true "Doom 3" because of the balance between old and new, and it wasn't even made by id Software only! It kept all of the classic weapons that handled the same way, most of the monsters from Doom II (and I emphasize the fact that their difficulty regarding weapon/health ratios was so similar to the originals), and ~30 levels with some secret ones; levels that followed a semi-linear progression with the three colored keys/skulls, including the remake of Dead Simple. It also offered something beyond being just a megawad which was the laser weapon, final boss, darker sounds and music (IMO the greatest change D64 had), redesigned monsters/weapons, of course new levels with some colored lighting and moving effects, different textures and skys, etc. Definitely the perfect balance keeping the Doom gameplay while adding new things and an entire level campaign. -
Doom95 has problems recording demos since using the UI's options to record a demo results in a CTD. Using the -nodm + -record commands works fine though. Playback functions normally through the UI. However, since the D95 engine has different limits, 1.9 demos are not always %100 compatible; a short one-level demo will probably play without fail, however it starts to desync in longer demos (playing the recent 30NM speed screws up around MAP06). So it's pretty much intended for demos recorded in D95, similar to how other source ports playback demos. Here's documentation of the Doom95 engine if you're looking for more bugs/nuances.

You can use your fists to kill in the beginning as well; aim your crosshairs slightly off to the guys face (so theres no talk command) then as soon as you start the punch, flick the mouse so your attack connects their face: resulting in a 1-hit gib knockout. With the pistol, you can either shoot from far away or off the face so that inaccuracy contributes to the 'accident.' You can get some people's PDAs this way.

CounterStrike Stabbing causes Real Life Stabbing

Damn, another CS stabbing? makes FPS Doug look like a pussy -
Were there any good custom maps for Portal? I thought that after the relatively short story, it would attract mappers to create their own puzzles with the possibilities of the portal gun. The only one that I played was the one made by a developer which had the sphere and rotating level; it came out shortly after release.

What Game do you think should be made into a movie?
DeumReaper replied to Clonehunter's topic in Everything Else
After playing Left 4 Dead 2, it would be cool to see a L4D movie. I realize that the games are based on the genre like Dawn of the Dead, but a movie with the original L4D characters would be entertaining. -
I think MAP19 The Citadel is frustrating. The hunt for those keys has always been annoying to me; I get the one by the arachnotrons fine (red?) but I can never remember how to get the blue? one since the portal that opens into that area is hard to figure out--I always find it by chance since I activated everything I see and running around the castle several times. EDIT: I forgot how to get the yellow key lol For Nightmare mode, a lot of certain levels are tricky, but MAP04's gang of hitscanners and MAP29's marathon gauntlet of death is hard as hell.

I purchased it yesterday, I've never bought from GOG.com; its nice that they let you download infinite times from your account. It comes with Dosbox (or you can tell it to run off your existing installation if you already have it). It has the CD music which I believe is virtualized with the installation. I've just beaten the shareware part (never played past), and going to check out the rest of Blood

Doom 3 pentagram: nerfed because of satanism censorship concerns?
DeumReaper replied to printz's topic in Doom 3
I don't think that the goat head on the symbol was a result of toning down the old-fashioned satanic imagery, just that id had gone with a different art direction in general. If they had made the hell knight more like the baphomet/goat, then the symbol and/or the baph icon would probably fit in more. Looks like they took less of the animal inspirations from the classics and more alien-like for the modernization. A mod including the baphomet would be cool though. -
Good pwads that feel like official expansions
DeumReaper replied to cacomonkey's topic in WAD Releases & Development
Other than those already mentioned, I'd have to say Eternal Doom. Full 32 maps with a lot of custom textures, music, sounds. The amount of assets it has is comparable to a full game, however its known for its overwhelming map sizes and convoluted puzzles (switch-hunts). -
Does setting AA to anything other than 16x AA solve the reset problem? Still, if you really want it at 16x, you could set it to 'none' in-game, then exit and force Anti-Aliasing in ATI's Cat. Control Center program, I haven't used it in a while but if its like Nvidia control program, then you should be able to set it specifically for Doom 3 as a 'graphics profile.'
-
I'm pretty sure its because your video card, it doesn't want to set it at 16x AA; if you set it to none, 2x, 4x or even 8x, it should save it. My older computer (ATI X800) used to do that but my current one (Geforce 8800GT) saves it at 16x.

Where's the ending?

Kirby's Dreamland was one of the first games that I saw a friend play it in 1st grade and I wanted to get it so badly. I did years later and it took awhile to get past the storm cloud boss. Wario Land was another classic one that you could just pick up and play with its simple gameplay. From the GBColor foward it was just Pokemon and its pinball spinoff.

I played the demo for about 30min; I didn't really see what I'd be missing from this game instead of just playing the original, the only gripes I had were that I couldn't figure out how to get the 2nd monitor to zoom independently and the game ran on average a little slower than SupCom1 (both maxed though). I'm biased though (I am a big fan of SupCom1), even before playing this I think it is one of those games that didn't need a sequel.

He means on iphone/ipod touch. It was already available on cell phones. I'm liking it so far, I just got the holy water pistol :)

The first thing I always did before playing D64 was turn the brightness all the way up.

Most music in TeamTNT wads. Great memorable tunes from Evilution, Icarus, Eternal Doom, etc. These are strong custom soundtracks, not ripped off another game or synthesized versions of recorded songs.

Well they're not the only MIDI users. For example, most electronic pianos that feature input to a computer use MIDI, and playback electronic-music arranging programs (Finale, Sibelius, SmartMusic, etc) are dependent on MIDI libraries. Still not enough for them to care, I guess.

I've played Doom on an iPod mini (via homebrew firmware); I'd believe it if Doom was ported to this.

Lately I've been interested in getting into PC (combat)flightsims as I seem to have been playing FPSs and other genres instead for the past decade & half. My experience with this once PC-centric genre is very limited so I'm looking for recommendations by flightsim gamers/enthusiasts/veteran PC gamers.

I'd say watch it just for the 1st-person part; other than that its an okay-to-mediocre movie based off Doom 3 that shits on its original themes.
-
So you don't need to have a Blackberry to play it? I have a Samsung Propel (SGH-A767), but the game descrip sure makes it seem like it.

I've beaten Doom 2 on Nightmare a while ago, saving at the beginning of every level; there were several maps that took a billion tries to pass, I think the hardest was MAP29 (and beat 30 1st time right afterwards lol) I've also beaten Doom 1 on NM, but I haven't been able to pass E4M1, not fully equipped even with the RL and too many cheap shotgunners to worry about. To me it felt like I was trying to speedrun the game: plan the optimal routes and use certain weps and hope you get lucky on some of the harder respawn encounters. Some levels are too hard for me with pistol-start (damn you MAP04!) while I've been able to beat levels with stuff at the start like MAP07 & 30. stx-vile's run is insane, that's all I have to say about that :)
