  1. That would be ironic as hell if the deal originally thought to be ACTA 2 ended up killing the deal that actually did end up becoming ACTA 2...
  2. Wasn't that the thing where they would get fined for every IP address they didn't investigate? People thought France would go dark because of it. I do hope you're right, but remember that Big Content has been trying to get this sort of thing passed for well over a decade (SOPA, PIPA, ACTA, TPP/TTIP etc.) so I doubt they would've pushed for this if they knew it'd backfire.
  3. You mean the age verification thing for porn sites? Or is there something else tucked away in there?

    The Crystal Maze (GZDoom edition)

You'll be surprised to hear that I've been secretly working on a mapset (well, 1 big map divided into 4) over these past few months. So, without further ado: What is The Crystal Maze? A quirky British TV gameshow from the early 90's, based around a series of bite-sized challenges against the clock. A description is here. You can also find all the episodes on youtube, the very first one is here. (it will look a bit cheesy nowadays, but it was legendary back then :P) The text file has a description of how to play, including the differences between the original show and this Doom version of it. I did recreate the maze in Fragport back in 2000...but the show was revived this year in the form of a live attraction in London (which is totally awesome) and that inspired me to recreate it again. So it doesn't mean I'm out of retirement, this is just something I had to get out of my system :P And while that version was done from memory using vanilla limits...this version has no limits. I studied the footage to recreate the layout as precisely as I could (but with 2 extra rooms and a prison), including the show's finale and the notoriously bad prizes. (and with GZDoom I could make things work as close to the original show as possible) What will I be doing if I have a go? The games inside cover a wide variety of challenges: Physical games are about killing monsters - you'll get 3 weapons and some armour, more health/ammo can be found inside. Mental games are about puzzle solving, some based on those in real-life while others are more Doom-related. Skill games are about movement, dodging and shooting. (of various flavours, old and new) Mystery games can be anything at all, but often involve navigation or exploration. Unlike both the original show and the vanilla remake, this version has difficulty settings - so everyone should be catered for: If you're not very good with puzzles etc. or you think you might struggle, go with Beginner. If you're a bit more confident with these kind of challenges, go with Intermediate. If you've played it a few times and know enough to push further, go with Advanced. The 12 games from the vanilla version have been recreated with improvements, and 20 new ones have been added (so 32 in total, meaning half will be played each run). 4-player co-op is also supported, but is untested. (it will work like the show though, with 1 player in a game and the others watching) So where do I get this Doom-ified TV show? https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/a-c/cr-maze (GZDoom required, tested with official 2.2.0) Click here for screenies.

    Whats your favorite animes

I tend to lean towards sci-fi/fantasy with plenty of action/adventure (particularly if the world/setting is unusual), but I like plenty of real-world ones too (historical or contemporary) and even the odd slice of life. Overall - Black Lagoon, Ronja the Robber's Daughter, Heavy Object, Arslan Senki, One Punch Man, Natsume Yuujinchou. Seasonal (2018) - Amanchu, Overlord, Yama no Susume, Golden Kamuy, Double Decker (Doug & Kirill)

    Ducks

    Surprised no-one's posted these yet...
  7. I believe there were street protests in Eastern Europe against ACTA.
  8. Time to bump this, as the next vote is just over a week away. (12th)
  9. Bear in mind that this hasn't actually killed it off, it's sent it back to the negotiating table for changes. (due Sept 10-13th) And there's a disturbing amount of finger-pointing going on from the elites...blaming Russian botnets and fake news etc. for the wave of activism that won the day. It's now a standard excuse for anything they don't like (Trump, Brexit etc.), and sadly most folks are falling for it nowadays. IIRC that was shot down with a huge majority (something like 4:1 or 5:1), this was only just defeated by a whisker.
  10. Because it's the one distribution channel (news, info, entertainment etc.) they currently don't control.

Expansion Packs: Your best, okay, and worst

Malice is pretty good, though not without flaws. I remember the controls being a bit screwy (IIRC turning speed was the opposite of what it should be with run mode on/off), which led to a weird but oddly fun movement style (this was the original CD version though, and I don't think I was using the mouse back then). No armour/powerups but you get some cool gadgets instead (notably a hoverboard), gameplay is fast and no melee weapons but secrets are a real pain (many aren't classed as such) and some maps are a little confusing. It has a neat cyberpunk/dark future/dystopian atmosphere though, with a soundtrack to match (probably the best pre-synthwave method of doing one IMO) Worth checking out though, especially if you like that kind of setting.

Cacowards 2018 Mentionation Thread (don't toot your own horn ffs)

Quirky Domain - mindbending at times. (edit: fixed link, damn this new forum software)

Expansion Packs: Your best, okay, and worst

There was also a distinct absence of ambient sounds, that greatly enhanced the original and the other mission pack.

Have a look at this improved version for UT: (lots more maps for a start) https://unrealarchives.com/return-to-na-pali-ultimate-edition/

    Worst Ending in a videogame?

XS - you win the tournament, escape with the prize, then get shot in the head. HL* - you've just been on a very long journey and "oh you're a corporate-controlled slave". Opposing Force even worse (locked up forever) and HL2 because it never got finished. (only Blue Shift had a reasonable ending, and even that was simply a side story) Hotline Miami 2 - NUKEM (get them before they get you) That's pretty much every Speccy game that ever existed. (that is, when it's not sending you back to the start and maybe flipping the screen or making all the enemies hardmode etc.)

    First/Second/Third gen Doomer?

Playing in 1995, mapping in 1999...first gen all the way I guess.
  17. In other words, it will end up feeling like a sequel to the reboot rather than the original. *presses the nuke button...get them before they get you* 30 years would be more than enough time to build Delta City...then it'd have to be all bright and shiny instead of dark and sinister.

    Favorite RPG/JRPG?

Haven't played a huge amount, but probably Legend (PC) for western and Tales of Phantasia (SNES) for Japanese. (the former had some really tough puzzles and an awesome spell creation system, the latter had story/characters/music that all combined together, along with that weird active combat system)

Brutal Doom wins mod of the year on Mod DB

Throw in the Hell on Earth Starter Pack and I would've agreed...on it's own, nope. (also seems daft that it's not only stuff from 2017)

    What was your first anime?

Dragon Ball (I thought I'd start with the lowest common denominator), followed by Ghibli films (based on recommendations) and Black Lagoon. (because I remember a Revy skin being used in Skulltag :P).

Doomworld & The End of Net Neutrality

Over here we used to have traffic shaping at peak times (ie. DL speeds would be slowed down if you went over a daily usage cap) to prevent heavy users from hogging too much bandwidth...but that was dropped years ago, presumably due to upgrading infrastructure. (and this was well before streaming was a big thing)

what would you like to see more of from the doom community?

More Heretic stuff: they come out occasionally, but not enough. And somebody, finish HPack. More Hexen stuff: still incredibly rare. A community project would be nice, the hub format can be workable if regulated properly. More Strife stuff: the one thing we still haven't had yet is a full Strife megawad (CIF3's psuedo-TC comes the closest) - community project maybe? (see above point on hubs) More (G)ZDoom stuff: this year has been surprisingly good, and there's still plenty more that can be done - particularly in the no-frills category. (analogues of various projects like 1994-tune-up, CC*, Slaughterfest etc. would be cool for example)

    Duke Nukem 3D is depressing

There's also the Christmas one...which tbh isn't very good. (the other two are)

Why don't people just use UDMF format?

That statement is a classic example of DW bias...just like the Cacowards of the past few years. (they are not a measure of how good a map is, just how popular a map is according to a heavily-biased community) What you're actually seeing is the much higher difficulty of making good maps in UDMF/GZDoom etc. (because there's so much more to learn and so many more traps to fall into) together with the much smaller number of people who make them, and ofc the fact that it's much harder to please this community with them. (so they can be regarded as "good" in the first place)

    Your favorite anime?

My favourites in no real order: Black Lagoon (modern pirate) Ronja the Robber's Daughter (medieval/slice of life) Heavy Object (sci-fi/military) One Punch Man (action/comedy) Arslan Senki (fantasy/military) RWBY (action/school) * Natsume's Book of Friends (rural/slice of life) Rokka no Yuusha (fantasy/mystery) Shirobako (city/slice of life) Most Studio Ghibli films * technically not anime but still counts for me tbh...let the flames commence Seconded on all counts...also quite like Sakura Quest (finished last season) and Shoukoku no Altair (still going this season). That's one of many big ones I still haven't got round to yet...
