and i often find myself wishing i could build doom maps for a living rather than go through 5 years of building "parametric screen walls" and finding proportions in everything around me.

when you want to go into it because of doom, then yeah, it is pretty disappointing when you remember how different an abstract doom map is from a real life, functional piece of architecture. what is still so appealing though is the thought that you can take some idea from your head and make it tangible, and that tangible thing can be inhabited by people. which is also sort of like doom.
if i become world famous and get to the point where whatever the hell i make is the best thing there ever was, then i'm going to make imitating doom maps the thing of the future -

Heh, sounds like the people who go into Computer Science because they can play video games good and utterly failing. I was the opposite, going into CS because eh, it sounds kinda cool, and loving it once I started taking classes.
Yeah, when I met with the CEO of a small local game company, he said a lot of people think they want to get into game design just because they like playing games.
