There's a pretty good Simpsons level for Counterstrike along those lines, at least for the house exterior. But doing a wad with a better game (like Doom) would of course rock all the harder. :) What's NMD recharge replace the grafx/sounds with?

    Favorite wads/mods?

I'm into games, and I'm into games that most people have never heard of, but if someone asked for my help on the topic, I wouldn't be abusive about it. I'm not saying we're all losers, but many geeks do feel a kinship based on enjoying specific things that aren't the norm, and many are prepared to be thought of as 'unpopular' in their dogged pursuit of them. Geek doesn't equal loser, but it's definitely a different sort. As to the topic, kristus was whining about yet another favorite wad thread (which seems odd considering the forum is wads & mods). He's got a couple of choices. He could ignore it (nobody's forcing him to read the thread), or perhaps even better he could restate his particular favorites. Maybe he changed his mind over the years on a couple of wads. Maybe a new one popped up that many weren't privy to. Maybe he could use a new take on the description, or maybe, just maybe, he could let others share their fave wads and let them talk about why -they- prefer them. With all due respect, it's not like Doomworld regulars are the final authority on what wads are great. It's subjective, and all opinions, whether a regular or a newbie, are worthy of respect. Now back on topic, anyone got any favorite sound/graphic sets ala Simpsons Doom (my personal favorite)?

Yeah, sorry about the ranting, but there's just something about elitists in geek forums that burns me. (Not merely that the term 'geek elitist' seems to be an oxymoron) The great thing about the geek subculture is that we all know that we've got issues, and we accept each other anyway. I've got nothing to prove as far as being a gamer's being concerned, but if he wants to challenge me as far as actual gaming resumes, I'll be happy to hang 'im out to dry. :) Now that that's over with, thanks for the wad titles. I'm always looking for something new to do with Doom. :)

What? Tempt you to belittle me (heck I'd like to see you try to do that) or someone else? Sheesh, if there's a reason why 'the Doom community is dying', it's because some people busy themselves looking down on others, driving other people who love the game away, rather than befriending or helping them. I love Doom. I've played it avidly since its release. I never laid any claim to being even remotely expert at either using the programs or commands, nor do I make any claim to being any more than a better-than-average player, but even if I were, I doubt I'd talk about people in such a derogatory tone as you do. Heck, it's a game, a great game, but one of thousands, and frankly if I was gonna treat someone like dirt over something, you can bet it'd be bigger than a game. But I actually <like> people, and even on topics where I -do- have greater knowledge, I certainly don't seek to belittle others simply because they don't know as much. Now back to the actual topic at hand please, and if you're gonna be snide, save it for something that matters.

Man, there seems to be a bit of snobbery on the board here, which is sad, because geekery is about bringing geeks together, not trying to make cliques even amongst us. So some people don't know about Doom as much as other people. Many of us (including myself) love it just as much and many of us (including myself) have had it and played it avidly since its initial release. I have my areas of expertise as well, and I hope I don't ever try to belittle those that don't have my level of knowledge in those fields. Now that I've ranted, lemme restate, does anyone have any favorite graphic/sound replacements for Doom?

I've explored a bit further, and unless I'm missing something there isn't a best graphic/sound set list or else I'm sure Ultimate Simpsons Doom would be there, or Barney Doom, if only for nostalgia. If I'm indeed wrong could somebody post a link to it? If I'm right, can somebody post their favorites?

Ok ok, I messed up and didn't install the dehacked patch. Most of the wads I've used don't really require it. I just put 'em in the launcher and they work fine. As far as wadfiles go and general programming for them, I admit I'm no expert, heck, I'm not even an average amateur, but that doesn't change the fact that nobody loves the game more than I do. As much? Sure, but not more.

Ok, I didn't mean to step on anyone's toes here. All y'gotta do is not reply to the topic if you've done this a million times before, but thanks for the links. :) Besides, new faves could always have turned up since the last time this was done. As for Aliens TC, the one I downloaded off cdrom.com was glitchy as all get-out. Invisible walls, jumpy sprites, etc. if you know a better place to get it, please lemme know.

Sorry, I've done b-boards so long that I automatically type my sig sometimes. I'll try to keep from doing it from now on here.

    Is the Doom Community dying?

Apologies. I was just saying that some people were leaving Doom because they think HL is so much better, and describing that, taking each relative to its own time and tech (the only fair way to judge two games of different times) it just plain isn't. But it got off track. I digressed. The point here is that Doom's contributions to the genre have probably had the greatest impact in FPS history. In fact there may never BE another FPS title that has this big an impact on almost every level. That is why, besides the fact that the game is still awesome over a decade later, that the Doom community will never die, because real gamers appreciate games with this kind of impact. Then again, I still play 'Street Beat' for the Commodore 64 every once in a while, so I might just be talking out of my hat. :) Just my .02, Rick

    Favorite wads/mods?

Just posting some of my favorite wads, etc. Hoping that others will too, that I might discover some cool new stuff for classic Doom I & II. Obituary: Just plain ol' great level design. New enemies (some futuristic soldiers that can turn invisible at times) a couple of new weapons, and some great traps. Army of Darkness Doom: One of the better wads based on movies, as you go to pretty much all of the locales, that are done using Heretic and Hexen grafx. Much closer to the movie than most wads. Simpsons Doom and Ultimate Simpsons Doom: The first one changed all enemies and objects into Simpsons related stuff, but USD also changed the textures, which are INCREDIBLE. Plague (I think that was the name): Mostly just posted by a friend to challenge people. A really big wad that was nigh-literally packed full of as many monsters, weapons and powerups as you've ever seen in a level (pretty much the whole level was giant rooms completely crowded with some of the tougher monsters. It was hokey and simple, but it was also a lot of fun, and a nice wad to get under your belt. Aliens-TC: Sure it never got fixed, but it was still pretty cool. ChexQuest 1-3: Gotta love that Chex cereal found a way to get moms to let their kids play Doom. :) Strife: I know neither this or CQ are really mods in the garage sense, but pro games that simply used the Doom engine, but Strife really showed what was possible in FPS RPGs using that engine. Too bad they never made a sequel. Wolfendoom: Just like anything to do with Wolfenstein. I know that most of these are obvious choices, but I'll think of some more later. Just wanted to get it started.

    Is the Doom Community dying?

I stand corrected Deathzor, Wolf3D did pioneer the development of mods. Still, it was Doom that really turned the mod community into what it is today. Id provided FAR more support for Doom in regards to the making of mods than anyone ever did with any game before. I'd say there's probably more available content for Doom than just about any other action game. Still, Doom did pioneer may other technologies, such as deathmatching (and the first ever official online tournament, Judgement Day), so the point is still valid. As to HL, yeah I know it was licensed, but the point is that, despite the fact that the game was very well-done, it really didn't add anything to the genre. Heck they didn't even have online multiplayer, and we had that with Doom well before. Doom ownz Half-Life, both in popularity-relative-to-it's-time, technological innovation, and historical impact, not to mention that Doom's wadfiles and general content far outstrip HL. Half-Life's a nice game, and it's popular now and that's great, but Doom is a true legend on just about every level, and besides games like Spasim or Maze Hunter (the first fps's) or Id's own Wolfenstein, there isn't anything really in its class.

    Is the Doom Community dying?

Agreed, but there's still a lot more wads out there for Doom than there ever will be for Half-Life. Heck, the Dzone library alone far outstrips the entirety of available mods of HL. Also consider that Doom opened the door for it all. The wads, tcs, development tools, opening the source code. ALL of that started with Doom. Also consider that Half-Life I was nothing more than a glorified Quake II mod, without even any deathmatch capabilities, and there's a pretty darn good idea of which was the better game.
  14. I don't get that. I've got mine set to Windows 95 on Windows XP, and I've never had a problem with Doom95, complete with sound. Best I guess not to reload XP. What I do wish is that I could find a decent program to run Wolfenstein. It runs fine except that some sound effects dont work, and there's no music.

    Need a couple pix, please!

thanx again Unfortunately when I did it with 95, the image came out in black and white. I noticed no effect with Legacy. With legacy the command is launcher.exe -devparm right?
