  1. I hate the crazy-angry-killer-machine depiction of Doomguy, hinted in Doom 2016 as well as guest appearances like Quake III Arena, and all the memes/media about him (like the comic). It's as if the continued exposure to demonic combat made him insane. I prefer my Doomguy to just be a guy who wants to survive and explore, kinda like in Doom 3.

    1. seed

What made you so angry about this depiction of Doomguy?

The Doom comic is actually a pretty fun read. Read it last year and yeah it's ridiculous, but that's what makes it a fun read, and Doomguy monologuing non-stop, heh.

    2. printz

I can't relate to such a character. I don't want to feel like I'm the toughest beast of hell, the nightmare of demons. I'm only trying to get past levels in one piece. This is getting ever harder as the PWAD design philosophy evolves and I lose training as I don't play Doom...

  2. New AutoDoom release is up: https://github.com/ioan-chera/AutoDoom/releases/tag/autodoom-r5513. I've fixed bot's inability to find health items.

As always, you can use the -bots N command line to set the number of bots to play with (-bots 1 puts you along with a coop bot).

  3. Man, I wish I were part of a Doom PWAD team or community project. Always fun to build something together.

But when I finally become one, I fail to deliver, by losing interest quickly.

One thing's for certain, I need to find my place. I'm never decided if I want to design a strict vanilla map or a complex Eternity mod. The former is easier to get into, but very limiting. The latter is (practically) my port and I end up spending more time coding it (many bugs to fix) than making the mods I want for it. Also starting EE projects involves too much routine of setting up EMAPINFO, OPTIONS and the PKE folder structure, not to mention creating a Git repository for the mod.

Also I tend to have random PWAD ideas by each day. If I start a level in one day, the other day I have a different inspiration incompatible with the first level, so I need to start another.

    1. hardcore_gamer

The biggest reason people lose interest is because they don't have a plan. Without a plan there is no sense of progress which results in lost interest. You need to have pre-determined goals. For example, I start by determining how many areas a map should have and what it's layout should look like. Then I just start working.

Welcome back, DuckReconMajor! I like when I see Doomworld posters return!

    1. DuckReconMajor

      Yay! good to see you

  5. Yay, I managed to install new Doom on my mid-2012 MacBook Pro (on Windows 10), on an external hard disk!

And the game is perfectly playable. The frame rate is indeed slower, but nothing bad -- the game simply plays somewhat slower as well, giving me more time to react. And it's actually faster than first time I played Doom 3 with that old computer!

So glad -- knowing this, I can certainly play other cool games, such as Wolfenstein: The New Order. Probably not so much the sequel, given that it's so new and the specs reportedly so high.

I'm still a bit unsure what might happen if I'm "caught" without the external hard disk. Will Steam panic about it and try to cancel my installation?

    1. hardcore_gamer

"Probably not so much the sequel, given that it's so new and the specs reportedly so high."

If the steam reviews are anything to go by then your specs don't matter because it would crash every 5 seconds anyway.

"And it's actually faster than first time I played Doom 3 with that old computer!"

Speaking of Doom 3, I think it's actually more memorable than the new Doom. Better? I dunno, I think the new Doom has better gameplay overall. But Doom 3 is in many ways a very unique game. Even to this day very few games can rival the amount of detail in it's level design and it's horror atmosphere is extemely well done. It also has the best depiction of hell in any video game ever. It's a shame it's mapping community did not take of more.

  6. I managed to play Plutonia levels 26-30 with the Mac touchpad+keyboard on ultra-violence without dying! Forget about "saves".

    1. esselfortium

That's cool! When I used a MacBook years ago, I found the trackpad surprisingly not bad for Doom once I got accustomed to it, though my friends thought I was a bit crazy for not just getting a mouse, haha.

  7. I think I should get back into the habit of saving the game after every critical moment. It seems I've been having more fun when I was doing it, rather than now when I often lose and have to waste time retrying.

    1. hardcore_gamer

The F6 key exists for a reason.

    2. printz

No, it has to be done in style. Simply save the game at any major event, using a new slot, with a well descriptive name.

  8. I'm adding UMAPINFO to Eternity. It's unbelieveable how broken the "Entering" next level display has been in Eternity, not working as intended and using clumsy EDF workarounds which I'm not sure even worked.

  9. I haven't encountered any vanilla or Boom map which, in lack of an ACS print() feature, would use wall textures with text, optionally scrolling left, to give important hints to the player.

I figure I'd use such textures to give mission briefings to the player at the start, then teleport him into the action area.

    2. Doomkid

dwango7.wad map01 has text that says "Alert!" which temporarily appears in alcoves on the wall when a player is getting the BFG. Pretty cool trick (although it's not scrolling text, but still)

    3. Graf Zahl

      Graf Zahl

Eternal Doom also has a few maps using some text on wall textures to explain what's going on.

    4. Linguica

      Sky May Be bro!!

  10. I want it to stop being a shame to place WolfSS enemies in normal Doom 2 levels. They have a legit threat level between that of the imp and the sergeant.

Why do the nazis in wolfenstein even wear blue shirts in the first place?

    3. printz

I'm guessing id chose an art style similar to the 16-color mode. Or they wanted them to be color coded. Or they didn't want full realism (not even the guns seek to be all accurate historically). When I was first playing the game, I would call them by their colours (brown, white, green, blue).

    4. Phade102

@hardcore_gamer They wanted to make the nazis in wolfenstein 3d look more comical. WW2 was still a rather tough subject for some people (Like the jews) and they wouldn't have been remotely comfortable with realistic (For the day) looking nazis in proper SS uniforms and such. So they made them look much less realistic.

  11. Just found out that Eternity linked portals would break if they crossed the line of 16384 map units on either the X or Y direction. Problem just got fixed.

  12. I've been working on a new Eternity feature: attached surfaces with linked portals. Normally when you move a sector linked portal's surface, the solid will move, while the portal plane will stay. But with an ExtraData/UDMF flag, the portal itself will move (together with the sector height). This makes setups such as variable height edge portals possible, for such effects as vertically moving objects.

You may want to use the attached surface feature to achieve anything meaningful in combination with attached portals.

    1. esselfortium

You are a magical person and a hero. Thank you for all that you do.

  13. Getting TIME SUCKS is too little for some of the PWADs there 😀

  14. Right now Eternity is in development mode. Don't rely on any drdteam release to be stable. No new features are going to be added. I foresee an official release once problems are sorted out.

  15. I've added a page about Edge portals on the Eternity wiki. Also added the UDMF specials Portal_Define and Line_QuickPortal.

  16. I've realized there's very little thematic difference between Heretic and Warcraft.

  17. I've uploaded a new version of Eternity for macOS users. Please tell me if this runs on your system.

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/93dehs7cn61suh4/Eternity Engine.app 2.zip?dl=0

Changes — for mutually exclusive systems:

    • for OSX 10.6.8: added back runtime support (didn't work previous version)
    • for OSX 10.8 +: code signed the app! Mainly: does it run for you this time? And without the GateKeeper warning.
    1. Xeriphas1994

Hi printz, it runs here and looks great, EXCEPT I can't get fullscreen to work. I seem to recall a similar issue with Chocolate in the last supported version.

Setting "favorite screen mode" to fullscreen on the options menu does nothing. The application appears to be trying to change screen depth when I add "F" to the "video mode" option or use -fullscreen on the command line (this is very obvious because I have a CRT display), but then it exits with an error.

P.S. No, I don't actually expect a fix to be honest -- heaven knows what kind of crap-ass outdated graphics card and drivers I have, but they can't possibly be something you planned to support. :P

    3. printz

No, it's not your graphics driver, it's just the problem of SDL 1.2 vs OS X. And you're the second user already who tests this and uses OSX 10.6.8 :) I was gonna remove the support, but it seems to be needed still. Unfortunately even if we later upgrade to SDL2, that SDL version simply drops 10.6.8 support altogether (min. required 10.7), so that won't fix your fullscreen issue.

Try playing with a really big window in the meantime. Maybe in theory it's possible to either download and bundle a development version of SDL 1.2 (later than the release) or fix it ourselves, but I have no 10.6.8 computer to test on.

  18. macOS users, please tell me if this version of Eternity Engine runs on your system.

runs fine for me on 10.10.5

New version uploaded in a new status update. Go and download it from there, do not use this link, as it has been obsoleted.

  19. I've just added my "Too Evil" megawad for Eternity on wadsinprogress.info: http://wadsinprogress.info/index.php?a=listwads&wad=1824

I'll add updates there or on the "Post your Doom picture" thread.

I didn't think that site was even still being used...

  20. Neat! GZDoomBuilder via TeamViewer from tablet is almost workable! Most map commands can be done with either mouse button. The only missing facility (which can be a blocker for any serious mapping) is scrolling (on PC I use either the scroll wheel or the arrow keys, which are hard to access from tablet TeamViewer). But if that gets introduced, we'll be able to use the tablets to edit with the GZDoom Builder from our home computers!

  21. Let's play a Doom 3 mod! It's called "Hallowed" and I found it at doomwadstation.net.

    1. snapshot

Played that few months ago, It's neat and short but gets frustrating with tight corners flooded with enemies.

    2. printz

Yeah, it even has a "protect" mission. I just accidentally quicksaved as soon I lost :(

  22. Am I the only one who thinks that the Apache Cordova logo looks like a Doom medikit?

    1. Deleted_Account

picked up a medikit that you really need!

  23. Now the AutoDoom bot finds jump spots (based on what humans find) pretty well, but I still need to find a way to get the bot to jump correctly, as it totally falls on every attempt.

      gotta believe

  24. I'm slowly realizing that chaingunners with spider mastermind firepower are overpowered. If you don't see them (and have mediocre health/armour), you easily die.

What to do if the player chaingun is twice as fast as default, and these dudes carry two such chainguns?

      baja blast rd.

Have them drop an ammo clip!

Another idea: Lunatic has these zombies that fire revenant missiles, and they have incredibly long delays between the beginning of their attack animation and when the rocket actually is fired. Frankly it's so long that it's REALLY funny,  but I think you could look at it for comparison's sake and then pick the longest delay you can without crossing over into farcical territory.

I toyed around with the idea of a beefed-up chaingunner myself once. (And also an "SSG" zombie.) You could make potentially OP monsters work with careful staging. The Valiant pyro knight comes to mind; skillsaw mentioned that he only revealed them in front of the player, because of course getting wrecked by an unforeseen stream from behind would be quite unpleasant. So the analog here: you could favor placing these superchaingunners where the player basically can't miss them: close-quarters set pieces (with sufficient cover of course) where all reveals are obvious seem like a great spot, for one thing. I think in incidental placements I'd use them a lot more sparingly than a regular chaingunner, favoring areas with limited line of sight (meaning: it's unlikely that the player will unknowingly wake them up and have them roam aimlessly, and it's unlikely that the turret variety will be able to snipe the player from a distance).

I think a regular chaingunner is already a borderline mid-tier monster, so provided you don't give them a counterbalancing nerf (such as the aforementioned long delay between telegraphing and attack), it's probably a good idea to treat these monsters as, similar to a monster with ~500 HP in terms of numbers: use them in smaller groups at most, with larger groups saved for rare occasions.

Increasing the reaction time of chain gunners might help.
