Things about Doom you just found out

It seems you're right. It's a bug with Zennode. When I rebuild with another node builder the monsters behave normally.

Things about Doom you just found out

Today I learned, thanks to the WAD Hardest Fight, that if you make a map with only one sector monsters will chase you, but won't attack. The map has to be made in Doom format. Advanced formats like Boom and UDMF won't work. Surprisingly, this bug isn't fixed in modern source ports and even works in GZDoom.

Announcement to mappers: New lava-fall texture

You're right that my new version of the map hasn't got in yet. I recently discovered that I was working from an older version of the map, because another mapper made changes since my last version. This includes using blood instead of lava, changes to the decoration and pickup placement, etc. So, now I'm working on reconciling this version with my version, and not knowing of any tools to help automate this, it's quite time consuming. >_<

The documentation says Freedoom uses Zennode.

Announcement to mappers: New lava-fall texture

Nice work Blastfrog! I like it when Freedoom has textures that improve on Doom's while remaining compatible. I've been very slowly working on an update to Map10, and there are parts of that map where I originally wanted to use a lava fall texture so this is a welcome addition!
  6. Foreverhood is a good relaxing, story-based wad. It's more of an experimental art piece than a game. You won't actually fight anything but it has tons of atmosphere.

What's 1 quirky thing about the place you live?

We've got a building textured with GRAYTALL and a tanning shop called Startans.

    GZDOOM Glowing Coins (solved)

Zdoom already has a coin called "coin" , so you've got a name conflict. Name your Decorate actor something unique (like goldcoin, coin1 or something) and use that name in gldefs and it should work.

What's 1 quirky thing about the place you live?

I think they did it because the indoor bus station was quite dark and opressive. I think I caught a bus there once and it was cold and unpleasent. The really stupid thing is, they still haven't figured out what to do with the old bus station! All that space has just gone unused. Typical Medway planning I guess... The other day I was reading this article about Traffic Cone Man. The statue is of Thomas Waghorn, a sailor and "local hero". What really made me laugh is that historians who've looked into him describe him as a "fraudulent self-publicist" who "achieved fame by accident". So, our local hero, the man who we put a statue of up in our town square, was a hack fraud who fooled the whole town. He really is our local Jebidiah Springfield!

What's 1 quirky thing about the place you live?

Nope! Sorry. I don't live in Gibraltar. I live in England. That's just a building called Gibraltar House. It's a dentist of all things.

What's 1 quirky thing about the place you live?

Probably the quirkiest thing is that there's a statue in our town square that youths like to stick traffic cones on. It's become something of a local tradition.

Quakespasm doesnt work on my laptop(help!)

Like Edward said, you probably have a 32-bit machine. Try redownloading Quakespasm. If you're running Windows, Windows (32-bit) is the build you want.

Dose DOOM 2016 run well on Nintendo Switch?

For me, it depends on a couple of things. First, where do you do most of your gaming? The Switch is a good choice if you something you can throw in your bag and play when you're away from home. The other question is are you only buying this for Doom? If you're a fan of Nintendo games, the Switch might be a good buy anyway, as it has exclusives like Smash Bros, Splatoon etc, but if you're not interested in those then a PC would serve you better. But as the above post said, if you're buying it *just* for Doom, and you do most of your gaming at home, then you could probably build a capable enough PC for about the price of a new Switch.

Things about Doom you just found out

This was something I never noticed before! I checked my copies of Doom 1.1 and 1.2, and both have the Spiderdemon death sound without the explosion. I'm guessing this is one of those things they changed when they did Doom 2.

minor complaints about level geometry traps

It means the level works with the original MS-DOS version of Doom. Unlike modern ports, such as Boom and GZdoom, the original DOS version (known in the community as Vanilla) had strict limits on how much detail you could put in the map. The game will crash if there is too many lines or surfaces in a scene. When the Freedoom developers decided that the project should be able to run on Vanilla Doom, I redid the map to remove detail. When I did that, I had to remove lines, and move others around. In this case, when moving some lines I accidentally introduced that inescapable pit.

minor complaints about level geometry traps

Thanks for the feedback. I'm the one who worked on the current version of Map 10: Deadly Outlands, and I never noticed that mapping error! It probably happened when it was made vanilla compatible. I'll fix it when I get some time. As for the "hole in the floor" exits, that's a common feature in later Doom 2 maps. Some thought should probably taken on how they're used in Freedoom, though.

Things about Doom you just found out

Every outdoors area Episode 1 level uses high walls. The skybox is clearly not designed to be seen below the mountains, so I wouldn't be surprised if Raven never even noticed the mistake!

    Unpopular maps you enjoy

Nirvana's one of my favourites, despite all the hate it gets. I load it up every now and then if I want a short blast of Doom.
  20. What is this? JewellVoice is a Doom modification that replaces every sound effect with my voice. Similar WADs have been done before, but I took it a step further by creating a SoundFont that makes every instrument my voice as well! Why? Because... April Fools. It still counts if it's the evening where I live. Right? RIGHT? How long did this take? A month, give or take. Most of that was spent on creating the soundfont. Download: The project comes with two files - a vanilla compatible WAD file, and a SF2 soundfont that needs to be loaded through a software synthesiser such as SynthFont. They have been packaged separately due to the soundfont's large filesize, or for those that only want the sound wad. Google Drive - WAD SF2 Dropbox - WAD SF2 Instructions: For best results, I'd advise a sourceport that has FluidSynth built in, such as GZDoom or Prboom-Plus. Detailed instructions in the spoiler:

    Release Clean Up

Hm, that's weird. I just tested the same map on the same sourceport (C1M6 on Glboom 2.5.0) and the water effect rendered fine for me. Maybe there's something weird with the settings. Does this still happen with a fresh cfg file? Edit: Given we're supposed to be getting rid of vanilla rendering hacks, and its not contributing much to the map, the effect should probably go. I'm just curious why it looks so messed up for Litrivin.

Things about Doom you just found out

I gave this a go myself, and got the 1.6 beta working with a modified Doom2.wad. Just to confirm, I SSG'd the shootable switch on MAP08 and it crashed with "P_StartButton: no button slots left!"

    Criticism of Freedoom soundtrack

No, neither of those tracks sound like anything from Doom to me. The one labeled "former map13" is already in use as C1M3.

    Release Clean Up

Sadly that's impossible, especially when you get to a lot of zdoom stuff. Many gameplay mods will add and replace frames of animation on the monsters, which will look really ugly when played with Freedoom, with the enemies flickering between the originals and their Freedoom counterparts. One mod, Make Doom Great Again, which is a simple sky replacement, doesn't work at all because the author explicitly mentions Doom/Doom2/Plutonia etc, but doesn't mention Freedoom. Basically, when it comes to zdoom mods - they may work, but there's no guarantee unless the developer has tested their mod with Freedoom.
