  1. I've heard that you shouldn't be using phrases like "kind of" or "a bit" too often because they make you sound indecisive and maybe also afraid of voicing your real thoughts (so you're softening every comment with these words that make everything more vague and maybe also make you less responsible for what you're saying?). But I don't know, I think I rarely have, like, rock solid opinions on things. Usually everything is kind of mixed, I see various ways of thinking about the same things and nothing seems 100% good or 100% bad. So I feel like these "softening" words actually help me express my feelings more clear, they show the gradients or whatever. I dunno. What's your opinion on these words?

I used to do it. I try to cut back on it. Communication is not about expressing this perfect inner you to the world. Taking stances you don't completely align with keep the conversation going a lot better than endless disclaimers.

Even from the self-indulgent angle, not only it's ok to be wrong, I would argue it's important to make mistakes. You've got to get out of your comfort zone if you want to follow your thoughts to fruition and reach conclusions.

I think what you've heard is more geared towards speaking English out loud. When you're listening to someone speak and use those words often, they're kind of annoying to listen to because there is a lot of wasted time listening to someone have the floor and not tell you anything you can be sure about. In text, removing those words can give you a very authoritative/arrogant tone and makes you very open to criticism because very few things are limited to "always" and "never" outcomes.

Doom64 is kind of not Doom would have been a more friendly thread than Doom64 is not Doom.

So basically you're saying these words stand in for vocal inflection when used in text.
