id software heading to a galaxy far, far away for next game?
RDETalus replied to Buckshot's topic in Everything Else
If ID made this, it would be the first Star Wars media I'd actually be interested in -
This is your best and most thought-provoking concept in the article. I like the idea that while our basic phonemes are mouth noises, their phonemes are entire symbols. But the last half of the article doesn't explore this concept of "holy linguistics" very heavily, it's mostly a recap of the original SCP article.

I think this stems from an expectation that the Cacowards are supposed to be THE single objective, impartial award ceremony that speaks for the entire Doom community. A far healthier attitude would be to understand that many different competitions and awards can happen simultaneously. For example, you can win first place bowling in your home state. That's something to be very proud of. There are other people who will win first place bowling in their own home states as well, but those winners don't detract from your own win. And just as one state would never give its first place award to some foreigner living in a different state, there is nothing wrong with a community that decides to celebrate its own community members. For that reason I think the Doom Awards is a great idea, it just had terrible execution. I hope whoever is running it spends the next year whipping it into proper shape, because I think it would be a welcome addition to the community.

Forgot one thing: You can set a linedef to block monsters from crossing them. This can be useful to prevent monsters from climbing on top of couches and tables when they shouldn't, and also prevent their corpses from sliding up and on top of tables and stuff.

This is an excellent map. There are tons of details to give each location its own identity. The garage, the clinic, the barracks, etc... I enjoyed exploring further to see what's next inside the outpost. Feels more like a Half-Life map than Doom map. Lighting is also very good. I can see the light and shadows you applied to the pool table and the vending machine to create the moody atmosphere; again it makes it feel more Half-Life than Doom. Level layout and elevation differences are good. The map felt sufficiently complex without being confusing. I enjoyed traveling through old areas to see new areas. The map didn't feel "flat" like a lot of new maps tend to. Can't really evaluate the combat because that's not a thing I am good at and I completed on HMP with a couple of deaths.

Visual design is very good. I think you nailed the alien planet look. The glowing plants and glowing pools is very otherworldly, especially how they are implemented in the overgrown bases. The implementation in the jungle is a bit off in the first map though, sometimes they look like Christmas tree lights. I like the distinctiveness of the different themes (alien planet, ruins, rundown/overgrown base, high tech base). The progression through these themes communicates a strong sense of progress / adventure. Really pulls the player forward to continue exploring. The level design of the first map might be too long. I don't think the forest section needs to be as long as it is. Or maybe you could put some storytelling device in the middle of the forest section to make it more interesting. The level design of the other maps are fun. Very good layout, I never felt completely lost nor completely sure of where to go. That's the perfect balance for a map that focuses on exploration. Foreshadowing locations with windows really helps the player with this. I think the combat is interesting. Low monster count, low ammo count. Most monsters are very fast and melee. Darkness can conceal monsters. This meshes very well with the exploration side of the level design. Player has to count ammunition carefully while creeping through the map, checking corners for ambushes. Only complaint here is that the first 2-3 levels almost don't have enough ammo. You can't afford to miss too often, if you do, you just don't have enough ammo to fight through the map anymore. My biggest complaint is the music though. I don't think it matches at all. One thing you could look into is adding environmental sound effects into the map. Adding jungles noises to the jungle sections, machinery noises to the rundown bases, and humming noises to the high tech bases for example. Could work extremely well.

Yeah I don't know how I feel about that, it's quite useless to me. I don't want to talk to AI-powered NPCs. Problem is that generative AI usually doesn't have long-term memory. It's like talking to a person with permanent ongoing amnesia. You can't build any meaningful relationship / attachment to the character with that sort of dialogue. There are methods of giving generative AI permanent memories; I think AI Dungeon has been working on it, but it's not perfect.

None. "Enemy AI" in a video game is no different than any of the other code used in the rest of video game; just simple lines of code written by a human to create certain conditional behaviors. "If player is behind cover, then throw a grenade." The modern generative / deep learning AI stuff is completely different because there isn't a human coder writing every line of code, instead the AI is being fed enormous amounts of literature / artwork and left to its own to figure out the associations between input and output. I don't think anyone has attempted to apply this generative AI process to enemy AI in videogames yet. It probably won't happen anytime soon though because game environments don't have enough freedom to provide for all the possible answers that a generative AI can create. If the AI says something crazy like, "distract the player with a fire extinguisher," your game isn't going to be able to accommodate that action because fire extinguishers don't exist as an interactable object.

I feel like this is related to certain generation's trepidation regarding phone calls vs. texting lol

2023 Missed Cacowards - Any WADs you'd like to share?

Trenchworkz Facility by @DM_Workz It's very solid map by a first-time mapper. Architecture, detailing, and combat are all very competent. Great map for streamers to play through as well. -
What would be the worse game universe to be stuck in?
RDETalus replied to Apex Veiko's topic in Everything Else
oh yeah that one is extra bad. Nah, probably over a million at least. Humanity had already colonized the stars. Anyone in space (space station or space ships) during the rapture is still around. Barring any other complications, humanity can simply decide to re-colonize a planet. The fact that the remnant humans are using convicts in suicide missions suggest that there are still plenty of bodies to throw around too. -

Thanks @Scuba Steve, very appropriate words because that map was initially designed as a D&D adventure

Congratulations, you're on my browser's front page: -
Barbie unironically, it's way more intelligent than what it appears

Yeah the UAC could certainly figure something out here

If this enemy is going to be mixed in with regular doom enemies, I would say just do straight perspective. Otherwise, you will have mixed perspective between this enemy and the regular doom on-the-ground corpses and that will look strange.

Cop Story: Burglar broke into my house and stole some stuff, including a silver ring. I went to the cops and provided them with pictures of the stuff that they stole. They said they have a known suspect on camera breaking into other houses in the area. Arrest is made. Eventually they seize all the stuff the burglar stole. They present the evidence, including the silver ring. Something feels very off though. I strongly suspect that the silver ring they presented is fabricated evidence. I think the cops bought an exact copy of the silver ring and placed it in evidence to stack up charges against the burglar. It is impossible to confirm whether the silver ring is actually mine because it was bought at the same store. They weren't able to recover any other stolen item of mine, besides the silver ring which happens to be a mass-produced item. So basically, it's very likely that they couldn't find MY burglar and instead just stuck the charges on another burglar that happened to get caught. The cops around here are basically just a state-sanctioned mafia. They probably make deals with all the other organized crime rings in the city.

It's certainly a hilarious situation. I've been in weirder though. One time I was in an auditorium with Richard Spencer and a dozen nazis (some in uniforms and armbands) and I asked them what they would do if I refuse to be deported lol

How old was this guy? It sounds like he went to a jail at a young age for a long time and got sucked up into the gang culture to survive. Now he has no idea how to interact with the normal world.

lol. That's what they call "Nixon goes to China." It's a very strong persuasive position. People are, somewhat paradoxically, the most persuasive when supporting an idea that clashes with their other established ideas.

what would the legal ramifications be for the uac causing the hell invasion?
RDETalus replied to roadworx's topic in Doom General
I think the answer really relies on what services / products the UAC provides its host nations, and whether those services / products are important enough to be dissolved. If the UAC is the energy company for the human civilization, then no, they will never be dissolved. They must continue operating. -
I tried drinking that Soylent stuff for a month straight, for the reasons OP is talking about: Obtaining and eating food usually feels like a waste of time. This had a really positive side effect though: When I did eat actual food, it tasted like 10x better. I would eat the Soylent stuff for 2-3 days, then decide to eat a cheeseburger and coke and it tasted incredible.

Sure, but that doesn't answer my question. There are tons of people, big and small, making conspiracy theory claims all the time. What was so special about Alex Jones that got him sued for 9 figures?
-
That's such a weird case, I don't understand the legality of it. Where it starts and ends, what is allowed and what isn't. Like if some other big time radio host had started saying that 9/11 was all actors and such, would he get sued?
