I wouldn't even think about playing Doom 3 on any laptop that doesn't have at least a Mobility Radeon 9000 with 64mb RAM (which would probably run okay at 640x480 low detail), preferrably a Mobility 9600 Pro or 9700 Pro. I know a guy who gets a decent framerate on his IBM Thinkpad (I think it's the T21? I don't remember) with a 9600 Pro 64mb card playing at 640x480 low detail. My folks and I are splitting the bill for a new laptop for myself for christmas. Right now Cyberpower Inc.'s Xplorer X64-8000 is looking pretty good... Athlon 64 2800+, 512mb PC2700 DDR RAM, Mobility Radeon 9700 Pro, and a free copy of Far Cry for $1253 (I opted to save $32 by not adding a wireless NIC). That's probably the cheapest 9700 Pro laptop I've found, and I've been looking around for about a month now. Doom 3 should run quite well on it. :D Take a look: http://www.cyberpowerinc.com

I like the fact that you have to press a key to run, I think it makes you want to take your time and absorb your surroundings, and I also think it makes firefights a little more challenging. More challenging = getting more out of $50 game

I'm going to dl the demo and burn it to a CD so I can have something to do when I'm bored and sitting in a computer lab on my college campus. All the computers on campus are (mostly) Dell P4s with integrated Intel graphics. Considering that's what was in my Dimension 2400 before I swapped out the motherboard for one that had an AGP slot, I'm curious how badly the game will run. :P But even if I have to turn the settings down all the way, it's better than sitting here bored.

I have a pretty fast cable connection (I forget exactly how fast... but fast enough to get 50-100ms pings usually) and multiplayer has been ok. My fps drops significantly when there are a lot of people around, but not to the point where it's unplayable. My major qualms with multiplayer are not with the game itself, but rather other people playing the game... I don't know if it's just me, but most of my opponents have been way more newbish than any I've any encountered in any other game. So far I've been accused of being a bot countless times (the most memorable would be on August 3rd, the day the game came out... someone was already accusing me of cheating), have had my armor repeatedly depleted by people who don't know what "Team Deathmatch" means, have been randomly kicked for no reason (one time I asked a guy why he called a vote on me and he said "because your name has color in it") and have sat around on servers for 20+ minutes before getting frustrated and leaving because people don't know that kills don't count during the warmup and they have to actually press F3 to start playing. And just to challenge myself, I try not to use the rocket launcher. I pick it up just to keep others from using it on me, but I usually stick to the good ol' shotgun or plasma gun when I want to work on my aim.

I'm an agnostic, and I honestly don't care whether or not heaven and hell exist. However, Doom 3 is a freaking awesome game. So who cares? Just play the game.
