  1. Looks great, I love bright and sunny maps and I don't think I've seen a software compatible blue daytime sky that looks as nice as that one does before. I'm also not too crazy about the gray texture either, but an even worse offender IMO is the patchy grass flat. The repetition in such a large area really doesn't do it any favors.
  2. Indeed! This is going to be a lot of fun. If nothing else it will be a good way for those of us who have gotten too comfortable in our styles to at least try something new.
  3. Here it is, although I don't think it's particularly relevant to this.
  4. This sounds awesome, so I'll sign up. My stuff: Sector 666 (1998) Aeternum (2007) ZPack (2008) (E3M1, E3M8) Stronghold: On the Edge of Chaos (2010) (STR08, STR23, STR24, STR31) Vanguard (2011) Lunatic (2011) Hanging Gardens(2011) 32-in-24 11(2011) (MAP02, MAP15) I think that's everything. Also, I hope no one draws Mechadon's name. Especially anyone who's seen what his Back to Saturn X "speedmaps" turn into. Tee hee.
  5. That sky texture is a temporary placeholder. Ptoing was working on a more natural looking sky texture using the same purple color range.
  6. So I made a jokewad for GZDoom to celebrate April Fool's day. It's not fun, it's not funny, but if anyone is bored and wants to kill a few minutes here you go. I spent a couple hours making this today so I might as well share it. I used graphics I made several months ago but never used in anything. Also: it is beatable. so I made an April Fool's wad

Thanks for playing. admittedly the only reason I made this is because I wanted to see a huge pain elemental that shoots out normal pain elementals and I couldn't think of any context other than a jokewad to do that in.

    Book suggestions

Yeah, I'll second this suggestion. I just read Embassytown a week or two ago (having never read any of Mieville's other books) and loved it. Probably the book I've enjoyed most over the last couple of years.
  9. I always make blood deal damage in my maps. A quick check of the IWADs suggests that doing so is not without precedent, as I noticed damaging blood sectors in E3M7, E4M5, MAP20, MAP25, and MAP29 (every map I could think of from the top of my head that used the blood flat, given a minute's time). Whether or not it is realistic to me doesn't matter. I just generally think of blood as a damaging surface within the context of Doom. More important for me is consistency. In any given project, either ALL blood should deal damage or none. The same goes for the other liquids as well. Although damaging water does legitimately bother me every time I see it.
  10. Context sensitive music that changes all the time doesn't do anything for me. Catchy music that loops continuously is a lot more enjoyable.

I would love to see a dodgeball weapon that you have to retrieve after throwing.

    Facility

No one is saying you should make vanilla maps and stick with that forever. It would just be easier for you to learn what makes a map good using a simpler format. Instead of getting distracted by learning advanced features like ACS and polyobjects and colored lighting, you should be learning the basics of flow, navigability, texturing, monster placement, etc. These things apply to *every* map you'll ever make, and not specific ports only. That's why most here would recommend starting out with a simple port. It keeps your focus on the basics (which are what really determine good maps from bad, 99% of the time, heh).
  13. neat. I missed out on mapping for the first DTWID but I'll want to submit something to this for sure.

32in24-11. So much fun to play!
  15. so many cool pictures in the last page or two. I'm definitely liking the greenhouse structure in Fiend's shot, and the sky looks great too. Tango's shot is neat, I dig how massive and indestructible the buildings look. Anyway, here is what I've been working on the last few days: http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z148/pgdebruyne/Screenshot_Doom_20111216_231904-1.jpg The Saturn X textures are a joy to work with.
  16. I just finished playing through this. You guys did a great job, the maps feel very authentic and were enjoyable to play. The boss maps were especially well done, IMO. I felt like damaging floors may have been overused on a couple maps in E2 and E3 but that's really the only complaint I have. I'd love to eventually see (and perhaps participate in) a D2TWID. Making a Suburbs or Citadel style sandbox map would be a fun challenge.

    Doom's Octodecennial

Thanks everyone. I don't really have the words to explain how excited and grateful I am about how well my projects has been received this year. I put a ton of work into Vanguard and Lunatic but without community feedback they would never have turned out as well as they did. I'm even more stoked about being recognized for Mapper of the Year honors. I certainly wasn't the only deserving candidate and knowing that makes being singled out at the expense of recognition for others somewhat bittersweet, but in the end it just means that a lot of quality maps were created by a lot of quality mappers this year. So thank you again, Doomworld. Lastly I just want to point out that left to my own devices I would never have become much of a mapper. A lot of the elements of my style are derived from the works of others and refined into my own taste. So I feel the need to thank the mappers that have been big influences on my style, either through direct communication or distant inspiration - Erik Alm, Vader, esselfortium, AgentSpork, and Tormentor667, among many others. Thanks for showing me how it's done. And congratulations to all the winners. (Finally, I am a little sad that Lunatic's best feature didn't get mentioned in the write-up. I'm talking about it's storyline, of course.)

Lunar based wads? (wads set on the moon...)

You caught me. SEVEN YEARS of planning down the drain.
  20. Awesome! I can't wait to play this tonight.
  21. It was really hard to narrow down to just 16, but, in no particular order: 1 Ultraman TNT 2 Welcome to Die 3 Rooneytech 4 No Place for Rest 5 Concretion 6 What the Tech 7 Graytest Thing Since Sliced Bread 8 Radish Juice 9 Macrocastle 10 Pit of Psychotic Repair 11 Earl Gray 12 Waterways 13 Green Gone Wild 14 Rotary Supercollider 15 Vrack to the Izzo 16 Conveyor Belt Carnage Take my opinion with a grain of salt, I'm pretty new to deathmatch.

    The 18th Annual Cacowards

with the year quickly winding down I want to make sure I got my say in, so here goes: Double Impact: Extremely fun, levels were large and explorable but even so the action never let up. Bonus points for making the gameplay so much fun even with Doom 1's limited monster variety. Also, I love the outdoor lighting. Jenesis: I suppose this vote is contingent on a final release before the end of the year. If not I'll just vote for it next year. The maps look and play nice, and the music is consistently good. If I had to fault it for something I'd say the switch count is a bit excessive; but that wasn't enough to deter me from blazing through these levels and having a lot of fun doing so. Plutonia Revisited: Extremely fun and challenging. Icebound: one of the most ambitious maps I've ever seen in a Doom engine game. Even though it's only one map, it really captured the feel of being an epic adventure. I might nominate some more but I haven't gotten to play through some of the other big releases this year yet...
  23. Map19: What the Tech http://www.mediafire.com/?qpdd1x04u80ucp6 It shouldn't be possible to rocket jump out of the map anymore. I hope this is the last fix for this map.
  24. I jumped down there a few times and didn't see anyone else. The play area of the main arena seemed big enough for the 8ish players that were left at that point anyway.
  25. I went through and updated my maps (hopefully for the last time). What the Tech (Map19): http://www.mediafire.com/?bsuranaxpxbn569 -added more pointless detail -the area under the cliff is no longer accessible The Graytest Thing Since Sliced Bread (Map26) http://www.mediafire.com/?fyhv9beit87s3ge -added more pointless detail -made it easier to grab the lift ssg and the plasma gun without forcing player to slow down
