compet-n demos are *always* recorded in the original .exe, version 1.9. this means they will play back with the original for sure; 99% of the time they'll also play back with prboom and eternity.

@jello: doing it in one go is pretty tricky, when you're just playing map30 over and over you get in one in maybe 5 or 10 tries...when you're not focussing on it like this i'd say 1 in 20 or 1 in 30 is the chance. Getting it in two goes is quite easy, though. adamh: update? ;)

btw, my favourite part of this run was map14, which absolutely does not go perfectly to plan :). Running into the key room with 3% health...fun stuff.

combined time for map15 and map31 in this demo is 1:09. map15 speed record is 1:22. you could probably get a little faster with a full load of weapons, but it's a much harder run than 15+31, so this is probably the optimal route.

I didn't play sedlo myself (I've watched a lot of demos), but I played ocelot once, on csdoom, with a ping advantage. I maanged to keep it to 20-15 (to him) by concentrating harder than I ever concentrated on a game before for ten minutes. Then I couldn't keep it up any more, and ended up losing comfortably. Scary :)

Congratulations, vile (haven't seen you since this came out) - about to watch it, I'm sure it rocks. Playing without sound is definitely weird - in theory you don't really need it, but I've made some runs without sound and I always find I play much better with it turned on. as vile himself said, he's not the best dm player - if you want your arse well and truly handed to you on a plate in deathmatch, play sedlo (if you can find him, anyway) or ocelot. that *hurts*. speedrunning and dm are very different, although most speedrunners are at least very good at dm.

more like moving-to-canada-in-a-week pressure that's affecting mine, hehe...hope to get something else done before I go, though.

    Lag and XP

http://www.knopper.de/ is Knoppix, the biggest CD-image distro. It's one ISO, download it, write it to a CD, boot it, and you should have Linux. Let me know when you get that far and we can figure out the rest :)

    Lag and XP

vince: you could always boot linux and run using dosemu. That's how I play for compet-n now and there's no lag at all. You could probably do it from a boot CD like Knoppix, so no need to install Linux to hard disk...
  11. Doom under XP always feels a bit wrong, in my experience.

    Help with Final Doom

sudtic, teutic, obtic, mm, mm2, req, hr, hr2, strain, icarus, av, and probably some others i forgot :). currently working my way through vile flesh, see the demos forum. all UV. of course.

    DOOM vs Marathon

what do you mean by Doom's 16-bit "as far as graphics are concerned", anyway? Doom on the PC is 32-bit code, full stop - it won't run on a 286. SNES Doom used a completely different engine written from scratch for the SNES. The graphics are 8-bit in that they're 256 colour.

ok, so i lied - mlb.tv is broken tonight, so i played some more :). 4:33 for map09 now, i'm happy with it there. edit: http://www.doomworld.com/sda/dwdemo/VF-pack/vi09-433.zip :)

    Vile Flesh [demopack thread]

so, I got under 5:00 for map09 - 4:53. still not entirely happy with that, might improve it again tomorrow. sent to op, though. edit: http://www.doomworld.com/sda/dwdemo/VF-pack/vi09-453.zip

    Vile Flesh [demopack thread]

I just sent opulent a fairly rough 5:19, i'll try and go under 5:00 tomorrow, gonna sleep now :) edit: http://www.doomworld.com/sda/dwdemo/VF-pack/vi09-519adam.zip

    Vile Flesh [demopack thread]

OK, just made a horrible 6:36 first exit for MAP09. Is it right that this map hasn't been done before? Why not? Don't want to send this out, it's too ugly. Will improve tonight or tomorrow.

    Real World 2 Nightmare demos

I've been calling my demos adam02.lmp for so long now I forget what happened to adam01.lmp :D. I always just use -record adam02 and overwrite till I get one i like, then rename it. I honestly don't remember why. hehe.

    Golden Cybers

if lv17-159 deserved to be in there, so did hr02. it's an extremely good run - very much like running episode 1 nightmare or pacifist, lots of instant hit enemies and nowhere near enough health. very hard. i have to admit i was surprised lv17 got in there though, it's a fairly knock-off run that i was never really happy with...

    Vile Flesh [demopack thread]

ok, made a much nicer-looking 2:20 and sent to opulent. edit: http://www.doomworld.com/sda/dwdemo/VF-pack/vi08-220adam.zip

just made an ugly 2:24 for map08. i'll try and improve later.

    Requiem 10 maps in 10:29

yeah. ExM8 times never count for compet-n, as until lmpc existed there was no way to tell what the time was.

    Real World 2 Nightmare demos

ryback: oh, I've done it too. as for knowing maps - back when I record p3m1, it took me about six days of playing five hours a day...by the end of that I could actually play through about the first fifteen seconds of the map without looking at the screen :)

    Vile Flesh [demopack thread]

finally managed horrible map07 in under five minutes. 4:55 sent to opulent. I have never, ever played a level which suffers from the "shooting through enemies" bug as badly as this one. eesh. The exit room is ridiculously lucky, though - with this much health I expected to die, instead I save about five seconds...
