Let's discuss the term boomer shooters....

Come to think of it... the term is also false advertising. Maybe except Redneck Rampage.
  2. The sky transfer support has been extended over all complevels in (I believe) pr+ 2.5.1.5, so this is an issue of you staying on an outdated version. Both the current pr+ and the dsda-doom fork should have no issues with showing the new skies on complevel 2. I'd say cl9 shouldn't be recommended for general use, because it'd force different game mechanics on what is a mere limit-removing port. Don't want those monsters sliding over edges and PEs filling the skies with endless lost souls... Of course if one wants to see the fancy skies on an older pr+, it is a valid choice.

Let's discuss the term boomer shooters....

You wish. It ties to the 30yo boomer meme, so... weird conservative fetishization of old times they don't really remember. Why do you think it's represented by the dishelved, fattening dude on a lawn mower drinking Monster instead of beer? It's not about old people and Doom was extremely popular mainly with college students, much moreso than real Boomers. It's about certain Millenials pretending they wisened up beyond their age and have a classical, superior taste in games to Zoomers. Now the question is whether the icky origin got overriden by general context-free usage of the term, sort of like how Twitch reclaimed Pepe. And that's tougher to call.

I'm feeling filthy just asking this....

Terrywads are romanticized shitposting. There was a lot of crossover with YTP, except terrywads were less mindless demented fun and more malignant shock ambush. It's like fondly remembering how someone told you to eat a tide pod or inject yourself with ivermectin, and how you had to be hospitalized afterwards. Ex-terrywadders will often claim that it was just harmless fun, but they never explain where the fun actually was. Was it the rape jokes? Loud ear assault? Zip bombs? Doxxing and harassing idgames admins? On the dark side (the above was the fun & games part), the terrywad scene also had a significant crossover with kiwifarms and 8chan, which somewhat explains the weird fixation on their designated "lolcows". By which they meant Carnevil, Ralphis and others for simply existing as staples in the MP community, and idgames admins for denying them to spread their worthless shit. Whenever someone tries to tell you terrywads were just harmless fun, chokehold them into submission and ignore the tapping on the mat.

    Vanguard demos [-complevel 9]

Interesting that this wad gets such a sudden spike of interest. Keep it going!
  6. The pacifist category is a mess. There's a long list of grey zone ways to hurt monsters, and as Compet-N admins tried to specify which ones are legit and which are disqualifying, the ruleset eventually jumped the shark into sheer ridiculousness. The C-N rule for pacifist reads: The expanded forum post explanation reads even worse: This ruleset was tailor-made for the original CN wads (so basically just IWADs) and more or less gets the job done, but it completely falls apart for the general PWAD world. It also introduces the concepts of intent and accident into validating demos, which is opaque and easily abused, the only missing exception is that doomguy felt threatened for his life... Aaanyway. The crusher examples make me want to shout. 2 minutes later? Would 10 seconds later be too soon? What about 3? What about 3 but I'm already in the next room? I assume "obviously under it" tries to protect the map06 spider, but this explanation also disqualifies ksutra map21 from pacifist entirely, because you exit by activating a crusher that kills the romero head. The third one probably tries to stop things like the e2m2 hypocritical pacifist max where Ronge leads monsters into crushers one by one, but leaves everything to case-by-case interpretation. The teleport examples are also pretty bad, because they let you telefrag monsters both """accidentaly""" AND intentionally-if-inevitable, but if there is a line of sight, it's a murder. That's a lot of cherry-picking that actually allows more than it forbids. There are potentially contestable cases, e.g. a monster is placed on a teleport destination, but there's a way wake it up and lure it away before you take the teleport. It's been my goal to revise the pacifist rules for a long time, but the debates usually turn bitter and violent, because everyone wants to see a slightly different outcome despite agreeing the curent standard is beyond broken. However an unrelated argument with kraflab led to a debate over pacifist rules and everyone present seemed surprisingly willing to reach consensus on this immortal problem. So here's the proposition: First of all, this does not alter the C-N ruleset, because we're not C-N. It just means moving to our own standard that reflexes modern generalized needs, same as allowing world records for "C-N wads" to be recorded on non-compliant ports (everything except vanilla and CNdoom). The C-N interpretation still exists and it's up to the runner to follow the stricter standard and achieve C-N compliant records under it - but moving forward a "WR" is simply whatever is faster under both rulesets. All crusher damage should be allowed, because accounting for intent is a case-by-case issue and open wide to interpretation. Since "unavoidable" damage is already allowed, and since intentional infighting provocation is explicitly allowed, excluding leading monsters into crushers is arbitrary and inconsistent. All telefrag damage should be allowed. This is probably the most contentious point, because it could lead to some heavy duty slaughter. However current exceptions already make it fine to telefrag anything as long as you feign ignorance. If I glance away from the teleport destination before walking into it, was I aware of what's on the other side? Threading the needle on this issue leaves a massive gray zone in the ruleset, so for the sake of consistency telefrags should be either completely allowed or disallowed. I'm inclined towards the former, because the latter would invalidate existing runs and make a long list of maps impossible to complete by definition, e.g. romero head death exits. The barrel damage rules stand as they are, because they make sense. Don't explode barrels if they're going to hurt monsters. Exception: the implications of the previous two rules. Telefragging a barrel and crushing a barrel should be legit even if monsters get hurt. Romero head counts as a monster. Seems superfluous to state, but there actually is an argument against it since the head is spawned even on -nomonsters. But that means the map30 uv-speed would become uv-pacifist and that's such a lame cop out. Gun shooting is allowed. There is an argument that the player shouldn't shoot at all, because of the pacifist mindset and whatnot. But pacifist isn't really a "feel" category like the stroller, it should follow hard rules. Completely removing gun switch activation by the player or the monster wake up shot is too crippling. Self-harm is allowed. Same as old rules, but again trying to circumvent the "mindset" argument. Rocket jumps are cool and death exits are necessary sometimes. In total, the updated rule could read somewhat like: It would be nice to remove one of the most notorious sores of Doom speedrunning once and for all in a way that moves forward, isn't destructive backwards, doesn't anger too many people, and allows hardcores to use the C-N ruleset if they so desire. However it is merely a proposition open to debate, so feel free to, um, infight now.
  7. Yo pav, I played the set, much fun was had. It's a fairly challenging wad, but like... doesn't fly off into really hard stuff, so the player can just feel kickass when all goes smoothly, but a moment of inattention can shred you. And digging the techbase aesthetic, it feels very... structural and proper, no paper-thin walls and silly sharp angles. Anyway... ...some more bugs: - In map04, near the unreachable secret, linedef 2106 lacks a back sidedef, so watching the crusher from the small arena-facing window looks rather trippy. - Same map, right at start some secret flags should be applied to linedefs to not spoil which walls lower. - The map05 issues are definitely real. The skip to YK is technically not a big issue, since the YK itself has to be lowered first, however I'd probably mark the automap teleporter lines around that soulsphere sector (556) as secret so they don't shine on the automap. - The one-time RK door actually can break map progression in multiplayer if just one player gets in and then dies before lowering the YK pillar. Should be a repeat action. - In map06 chaingunners t. 498, 499 and 720 never teleport from their closets, because their sound sectors got disjoined from the collective. - The sniper mancubi in the final arena, particularly t. 802 and 803 on the topmost perches, are absurdly hard to target without mouselook. - This map allows a bunch of archvile jump shennanigans, like jumping early to YK, then also to RK, but they're just minor skips and they don't seem to break anything. - It is possible to combine an archvile and a rocket boost to jump straight into the exit room in map07. It is ridiculously cool and hard, the timing and health requirement is brutal. - In map08 the sniper mancos and imps behind the northern chasm ledge are again supremely annoying to take down, not very fun cleanup. - One of the cliff sections (sectors 455-459, between red key and exit areas) is marked as corrosive. Only sector 459 is playable though. - Is the pit in the exit area (s. 42/117) meant to be inescapable? I guess so, but that's a pretty mean spot, given one tends to fall right into it when jumping off the goodie rampart, heh. Nice. - In map09 poor cyb t. 1712 can't port out, because the floors in his telecloset don't really work along all the other telecloset floors. - There's an incredibly easy avjump using the start area's soulsphere archvile and just go straight to the finale. Even better, you can do all that without even firing a shot, which means the final arena won't have any monsters porting in. Even betterer, that's not even necessary if you quickly weave through the first monsters, because you can easily jump around linedef 4776 and the final teleporter won't raise. I even made a demo in a few attempts! Check attachment. - In map32 there are some really hard to finish off mancos once you're out of radsuit. ar09p053.zip

    New rule against offsite harassment

@Lunch Lunch I said mostly lies, because matador's post would have to be dissected and explained point by point. Different interpretations, lack of context, sometimes widely avoiding the real issue (40oz ban part), etc. I grant him some fair points too. I definitely wouldn't want his post to qualify for this defamation rule - don't know the guy, don't want to judge him too harshly. "All lies" was aimed at Devalous, who keeps inserting himself into these feuds with his grievances stemming from nearly 10 year old drama. And I'm sorry, I'm just too dispirited right now to make another explanatory mega-post again, the last one took me almost an entire day and the mood is low rn. I'd say there's a wide difference between posts that you can debate and explain, and posts where you need to debunk a serious accusation, like the DW staff subvertively posting hate speech on DB to fabricate backlash. That's basically libel even under the strongest free speech laws.

    New rule against offsite harassment

It's absurd that my original foreshadowing comment was removed while this transphobic rhetoric gets advocated in full force with almost no pushback by the administration. Explain something, do something... no? No, of course.

You would be surprised how much I agree with you. You're not the only one with innocuous posts getting deleted.

    New rule against offsite harassment

This is a valid point, but then you need to realize that doomworld is run in the US, by a citizen of the US, so that citizen needs to cover their back using the legal framework of their country. No get out of the jail free cards because XY is legal in Vanuatu.

    dsda-doom source port [v0.24.3]

Well, one issue with -longtics is that it is no longer a vanilla-compatible demo. The major ports all support it, but it is not a standard.

    Cacowards 2021 Mentionation Thread

Let me explain further then, since many people thought my post was mean... and I guess it was, depending on perspective. We absolutely read through the thread and take notice of people's opinions. We usually gloss over the bad takes, because it takes no effort to not reply. However there's no other award that's more heartfelt and embraced by the entire cacowards team than the Espi award. We don't really mind people mentioning Espi candidates, but you need to realize there's a virtual waiting list that can pop out names for a decade even if the commitee gets wiped out by a meteor tomorrow. The award started "too late" and we're playing catch-up with a massive backlog of brilliant people the world should recognize. Every year we wish we could also award another person high on the list, but you also don't want to cheapen the effect. So when a controversial name gets pitched in just because they made a recent dramatic comeback... this gets measured against that virtual waiting list, and I am not as stoic as some of my other colleagues, hence "bad take".
  17. I have nothing witty to add except fierce opposition to forum signatures. I think they're the worst thing that ever existed, including the Delorean, and the cause for Jesus getting crucified, because the Romans disliked the waifu he was shilling under all his posts about being kind to each other. I think three quarters of this forum would die in the waifu wars if sigs are enabled. I think parading your waifu in your sig is slavery, and DW should take a firm stand against such oppression.

    Creepy Videogame music thread

Surprised no one dropped the obvious Alice track yet, given Civvie just released a video on the game, heh. Chris Vrenna is a genius. My all-time favourite moody, unsettling piece of music is the pessimistic Terminator flashback-like theme from X-Com Apocalypse:

Espi award is the one category where we don't like being told who to award. Particularly when it's bad takes like this.

    Edgiest Video Game Protagonists

Oh shit, that's an underrated pick! No idea about the game itself, but several years ago I tried to read the comic and I just couldn't. The juvenile, horny writing of the early Image studio irradiated me with so much second hand embarrassment that I died and my tombstone says "Killed by cringe". And I didn't even survive to the part where our supposedly sympathetic hero impregnates the Witchblade girl while she's in coma. What's the word I'm searching for... r, r-something. edit: Talking about Jackie from The Darkness, since it's not obvious from the quote.
  21. I mention it in the cacoward dedication, but it should be repeated: This wad is best played with everyone in a voice channel. The combined frustration and whining elevates the experience to pure bliss.
