  1. Hi all! I'm still here, still watching runs, although I don't even recall the last time I posted anything... (Searches) Oh wow, 7 years ago almost to the day. Huh. So much has changed since then... Anyway, I'm in the mood for some longer demos where possible; if you've got a 15-minute beat-em-up through especially to a 6-hour slaughterfest with kills in the 15k range (so to speak) and beyond, I'm up for watching it. Does anyone have any recommendations for some especially long plays they consider entertaining? I've been loving the skill shown in shorter runs as well, and across a huge variety of maps and WADs, but right now I just feel like some longform appreciation to mix it up a bit. Suggestions appreciated! :)

I'd love me some long demos - Know of any?

Just finished watching the Sunlust D2All, loved it from start to finish. Can I just say WOW those levels are gorgeous!! What beautiful designs! There is a fantastic collection of suggestions here, thank you very much everyone for highlighting these for me! Greatly appreciated. I'm stuck at home with Covid (it's horrid) at the moment so these are going to be extra handy :)

Fantastic! Thanks for the recommendations, I'll check them out :)
  4. Wowwwwwwww! Since when did Hell get a robotic R&D department?? Amazing! Gorgeous enemy design, and so much variety! Loved this run, can't wait to see more. Excellent work, Nevan.
  5. Assumptions will be the death of me one day, I'm certain... Anyway I'll stop derailing the thread now ;)
  6. *facepalm* In scanning that first post I skimmed the download link, thinking "I've already got that", assuming that the SF copy was the most up to date one. Oops! Thanks, AD_79! Really appreciate the help from yourself and Memfis. That upgraded chaingun is a joy to watch in action... All working well now! :)
  7. Ah that might be the problem. I downloaded it from SourceForge (http://sourceforge.net/projects/prboom-plus), but the version on there seems to actually be 2.5.1.3 - There's the issue. Where do I get the more up to date one if SF is out of date? A Google search seems to favor various references to it, and links to SF, but it's out of date it seems. Edit: I've also looked on the forums here and the sticky in the Source Ports section also shows 2.5.1.3, with mentions at the end of the thread of a "2.5.1.4 test" version that I haven't been able to actually locate.
  8. Changed it to "-iwad doom2.wad", signal 11. Changed it to "-wad doom2.wad", still signal 11. Anything else you can think of? :/
  9. I'm getting "Exiting on signal 11" whenever I try and play back these demos. As far as I can tell I've got the "latest" Valiant.wad and PrBoom+; this is the commandline I'm using in batch: glboom-plus.exe -iwad tnt.wad -file Valiant.wad -complevel 11 -playdemo 1.lmp (I extract the demo to my desktop, the batch renames it to 1.lmp, and moves it to where PrBoom lives before that ^ line is executed.) It will get a few seconds in; long enough to see that the imps and pinkies have been retextured, maybe to hit a switch or grab weapons, then... "Exiting on signal 11". Here's the tail-end of stdout.txt: GL_MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE=16384 Using texture format GL_RGBA. ST_Init: Init status bar. G_DoPlayDemo: playing demo with MBF compatibility vorb_registersong: failed mad_registersong failed: input buffer too small (or EOF) db_registersong: couldn't load as tracker Exp_RegisterSongEx: Using player fluidsynth midi player P_GetNodesVersion: using normal BSP nodes gld_Precache: MAP27 done in 186 ms I_SignalHandler: Exiting on signal: signal 11 I_ShutdownSound: This is happening on all Valiant demos. Anyone got any ideas on what's going wrong? I'd love to see these.

    Resurgence demos [-complevel 9]

I certainly do! I just can't offer any advice because my personal skill level is... Well. "Not great." :) But I'd love to watch the magic happen in the finished product!

This was mighty entertaining to watch. Kudos on the narrow escapes!

"Doomguy was having a really bad day. Really. Bad. Day. So, he decided to get revenge on those who pissed him off... Which happened to be everybody. This video chronicles his Roaring Rampage of Revenge, seen through the eyes of madness, where all those who apparently wronged him took on the appearance of demons and were taken down accordingly." Seriously. I wouldn't like to even be in the same town as Doomguy, cause he'd murder your face off just because it "sounded like you looked at him funny".

Survive In Hell demos [-complevel 9]

Those are Creepers. Their portrayal in that map is pretty much spot on: In Minecraft, if they suicide due to player proximity or being sufficiently annoyed, you don't get experience or drops for killing them. And yes, they usually WILL kill you if they explode on / near you and you don't have armor (or only weak armor)! They're also quite tough to kill from a distance (decent HP), and melee range is certainly not advised unless you're quite agile - they recognise that you're close, and a very quick timer starts counting down. Still within range after 2 seconds? BOOM. Not sure if the crashing is deliberate (I imagine not), but even that makes "some" sense when in a Minecraft context: Death either results in you respawning minus all your stuff (softcore mode), or your world is permanently erased on death (hardcore mode). Creepers have a bad reputation for good reasons. :) So making them an awful addition to the map is... well, accurate.
  14. A few years ago maybe I had some maps that were filled with 1k+ monsters, massive fun to rampage through with a few friends in coop (or a deathmatch mode that respawns weaps - "deathop" maybe?) but I can't remember the name of them... Will be using latest PrBoom+ and Hamachi on 50Mb down / 20Mb up fibre connections, so lag shouldn't be a major issue (and if it is, we'll LAN it oldskool style with gigabit Ethernet). Just need maps that we're gonna have lots and lots of monsters to get hilariously killed by (laughing at the misfortune of friends is a sign of caring right?) Does anyone know of any suitable maps? Advice appreciated :)

Need a coop wad with LOTS of enemies...

Holy Hell 1.5 didn't seem to want to cooperate (will mess with it a bit more later), but Deus Vult was a lot of fun to give a test drive :) Thanks for the suggestions guys. My friend tried to chainsaw a Cyber... Didn't go well for him, and then I got rocketed from laughing at him too much. Good times!

^Agreed. Showcasing both the levels (I can see why Andy likes them!) and his skills, what more could ya want? Brilliant.

    ngmvmt1 demos [-complevel 9]

That was spot-on, thanks for the advice! Ok, so I got to watching, wondering what the newest version of PrBoom+ had over the older versions. Didn't take long to notice the crisper, clearer textures when extended to 1600x900 resolution. Really did Lv21 justice, what a gorgeous level!! And then I switched to the Automap, expecting to see the usual plain-lines, basic colors level layout. How delightfully wrong I was... Floor textures beautifully rendered, perfectly scaled, and ooh - Even a 3D visual effect for those areas that have a "stairs" design layout! And the final, perfect touch... Moving "liquid" textures such as lava. Amazing. Then there's the properly-transparent water used on the waterfalls. Doom's never looked so good. The demo itself had me glued to the screen, forgetting even to blink. Grimacing in sympathy when a rocket found its mark. Applauding the infight management, ammo conservation, weapon choices, and thorough monster-sweeping route. At the end, I was almost disappointed it was over, it was such a treat to watch. TL;DR: Beautiful level, brilliant infights, and playing style to be proud of. Bloody well done, j4rio!!

    ngmvmt1 demos [-complevel 9]

Does anyone else get "P_LoadSubsectors: no subsectors in level" when trying to play back this demo? Using the wad downloaded from DSDA, and the demo file from there as well as the one direct from the quoted post both do it.

    Kama Sutra demos [-complevel 2]

Anyone up for challenging some of these maps PlasmaLess? Map28 would be captivating if the BFG & Plasma Rifle weren't used. Would be an even bigger challenge than the existing Max run (which itself is bloody brilliant!) I fired this map up and got 130 kills without leaving the starting room or hitting anything myself (just firing to provoke response from non-deaf monsters), through infighting (the first cyber in the distance got mauled once he started throwing rockets), and there are a few others that get telefragged by the player as well so Cybers largely wouldn't be an issue. For the rest, infighting and the SSG would usually work. Rockets would make short work of Archies, Knights and Barons; a few "shepherded" Rev missiles would take out several more (or at least keep them distracted). Any takers? :)
  20. The map designs are just gorgeous to look at. Some brilliant times being put up too!

    Random demo categories innovation

I would *love* to see some maps done "Realist" style (no plasma weapons; picking them up is fine, using them is not), especially some of the later Karma Sutra maps. Without being able to just shred a Cybie in seconds with the BFG, in some areas a lot more tactics / sniping may be required, and possibly significant use of infighting with said Cybie depending on map layout. Not all maps would suit this, as some are designes specifically with BFG/PR Shred in mind, but for the ones that have sufficiently high ammo / monster counts...

    Introduce me to demo watching

I got *disgracefully* lazy when trying to figure out the best way to watch demos: I have a folder on my desktop called "Doom". Inside it are a lot of batch files, each named according to the WAD I want to watch demos for. There is also a "LMPs" folder, which contains the PrBoom+ shortcuts that correspond to these batch files. With these in place as they now are, all I have to do is: 1. Open the Doom folder 2. Click the link for a demo-containing Zip file, it opens in WinRAR automatically 3. Drag the .lmp file out of the Zip file into the "LMPs" folder inside the Doom folder 4. Run the appropriate batch file It gets lazier. Once I've got the folder open and the appropriate batch file selected, all I have to do for the next demo is: 1. Drag it into the LMPs folder 2. Hit the Enter key - Dragging something into the folder doesn't deselect the batch file, so the Enter key runs it! For those interested, the batch file contents are all pretty much as follows. I'll use my Plutonia2 batch file as an example: @ECHO OFF cd C:\Games\PRBoomPlus del *.lmp cd C:\Users\Admin\Desktop\Doom\LMPs ren *.lmp 1.lmp move 1.lmp C:\Games\PRBoomPlus Plutonia2.lnk The corresponding shortcut (.lnk file) target is: C:\Games\PRBoomPlus\glboom-plus.exe -iwad Plutonia.wad -file PL2.wad -deh PL2.deh -playdemo 1.lmp -complevel 4 No need for command-line stuff when you've got a setup like this. And for those wondering why I don't simply have the batch file do everything, including direct command-line running: It seemed sorta random as to whether the demo file would end up in the right spot before GLBoom got running or not - In some cases the file system simply doesn't finish the move request in time for GLBoom to pick up the file in its directory (a race condition in action, for the programmers out there). Having the .lnk file being run instead guarantees that the demo file will have been renamed and moved by the time the program runs - And the renaming and move are necessary so that the shortcuts and batch files are consistent and can be duplicated and modified appropriately for a new WAD with very little change. Naturally all the corresponding WAD files are already present inside the PRBoomPlus folder, as well as any extras like .deh files. If there's an even lazier way of watching demos (to use, not create, cause making this system did take effort!), I'd like to know :P Edit: If anyone wants a copy of the folder so they don't have to set this up for themselves, I'm happy to upload it. It really does make life easier :) Just keep in mind that you should only have one .lmp file in the "LMPs" folder at a time, cause more than one confuses the very simple setup I've got happening :P

Speed of Doom demos [-complevel 9]

Wow, wow, and a whole shipment of WOW has been delivered. The maps, gorgeous. Some serious artwork on display. These aren't just levels, they're works of art and works of da Vinci-level invention - From traps and secrets to simply amazing use of texture and lighting, space and sometimes the specific lack of it... Every level has something to offer, something that makes an observer like me lap it up like it's all-you-can-drink happy hour! The skills being shown, nothing short of amazing. From the previously referenced Jet-Li Jump to the skilful weaving in and out of a horde of Barons... Grabs, perfectly-timed weapon switches, awesome run-by (I'd say drive-by but Doomguy doesn't roll like that) blastings... And some seriously deserved rocket-surgery facectomies for those monsters who deal out a little more damage than their quota. The suspenseful bits, keeping me on the edge of my chair as I watch health and armor melting away under heavy fire or a sludge trudge. The barest scraping by with minimal health, no ammo... Or both! Absolutely brilliant all round. While I myself don't have those skills, I can sure appreciate seeing them in action! Keep up the amazing work, guys; if I wasn't so sucked in by it, I'd be jealous :) :)

    NDCP UV Max Demo Pack

It's the one linked to in the starting post... Could be the complevel stuffing it up if it's not necessary anyway, and I'm unsure as to whether I've got the latest PrBoom, so time to go check that out too. If it still goes strange once I've checked these out, then it could be Windows 7: A Doom Oddity. Thanks for the advice!
