  1. Sorry for the late reply, I'm pretty sure the Legacy master server has been down for over 10 years, but SRB2 which you mentioned is a fork of Legacy still has servers running. I know Doom Explorer recently added Doomsday support. @bond, is there any possibility of Chocolate Doom master server support in future builds of DE? Just curious I suppose you could add the old CSDoom master server under "not working now" as well. That's been down for closer to 20 years now (god damn..)

    Rest assured that WhackEd4 is not an infected program. Anti virus programs often have false positives for obscure programs. Most of them are peddling snake oil - as a rule of thumb, downloads from places like doomworld, idgames, zdoom, Zandronum etc are not infected, the community comes down hard on that kind of stuff.

    That’s correct. The great thing in DeHackEd is that you can make it have separate animations: one for naturally fizzling out mid-air, just by playing it’s entire animation, and another actual “death by hitting the wall” set of frames (simply referred to as the objects death state). This way you could have the object play it’s normal animation in mid air which leads to it ‘fizzling out’ (and never reaching it’s true death state) and a totally separate, faster or slower animation for death by wall contact.

I noticed this page on the Wiki, however when trying to launch the game with it in vanilla Doom2 with dosbox, i couldn't seem to get it work - is the command line parameter -ticdup 2? Am I doing something wrong? Any help is appreciated :)

    Sure, most projectiles have 2 frames of animation that call eachother in an endless loop. If you make it so that the second frame goes right into the object's death sequence, the projectile will be gone before it hits the wall, unless a wall is very close. It's kind of hard to explain so if you don't get it I can make an example.

    Help with an NPC

    There will be a frame of the Sargeant shooting in the "States" table, calling the action "SposAttack". You'll also see what frame comes next. Make it call another frame of the Sargeant shooting instead, possibly change it to use one of the Commander Keen action frames. You can of course change them to call the sprite of the Sargeant shooting rather than the Keen sprite. Here's an example. Naturally this will have weird effects on the Keen actor, but you can change his pain state if it's an issue. testy.zip

If you want to fire 7 accurate pellet shots, you'll have to use 7 frames with actions attached, and change them to "firepistol", and make sure there is no "refire" called at any point. 6 of the frames can have a duration of zero, but the 7th frame needs at least a duration of 1 for any of it to be registered. Unfortunately, this will always use 7 ammo, regardless of what ammo type you set the weapon to use.
  9. So I made a few changes to keep this in line with some arbitrary classic vanilla limitations: Sprites have to be the first lumps in your wad, nothing can come before them. It's recommended to place them after a SS_START marker lump just for organization, but they must end with an S_END lump (not SS_END) Flats should come next, because they have similar limitations, although it's not quite as stringent. Once again starting with an FF_START marker is a good idea, and it must end in an F_END marker, once again it can't be FF_END because the wad will only incorporate the new flats that start before an F_END lump I changed your custom patch to be between PP_START and PP_END lumps. I don't think there's anything wrong with using TX_ instead but I just changed it because PP (lol) is more common. Doing all this allowed it to run in vanilla, but whenever a player sprite is seen, it crashes the game with an "invalid sprite frame" message. I see there's an included .DEH patch where you've changed PLAY to DYNP, so I've renamed all the sprites to DYNP. It seemed to be missing F frames as well (jumped right from E to G). Now it all seems to work fine! Here's the fixed up version: dynp.zip

    Doom Eternal Delayed(March 2020)

    Fuck id for not somehow magically looking into the future months ago to see that they’d end up needing more time, I say as I preorder games and demand there be no delays which are both godawful practices. Nevermind the fact that consumers who behave like this are partly responsible for huge game companies treating their workers like dogshit, overworking them and under paying them just to meet moronic deadlines - I didn’t get to play the game on some random arbitrary day, therefore my enjoyment of it has been inexplicably reduced! Me having to wait for this particular piece of entertainment is the only factor here worth considering and I for some reason schedule my time around game releases. Send help! edit: I don’t want it to seem like I’m dog piling on massivefanofdoom, he is not alone in what he says by any means. I’ve seen this kinda talk making the rounds elsewhere since the delay was announced a week or whatever ago.

    Game Obsessions You Don't Understand

    I get the feeling you're referring more to people who play exclusively online games, in which case I agree - Being totally on my own and escaping into a game world is something that I like to do every now and then. But, if not for multiplayer/community, I'd have to say in all honesty that I'd probably have been bored of Doom years ago by now. The community of interesting people and their many different creations and perspectives is what keeps me around, and as far as the game itself, the ability to play against opponents with an actual brain is amazing. I think it must be totally down to perspective. I remember a week or two ago Linguica said something along the lines of "Doom PVP is boring and repetitive", and I just thought it was a total knee-slapper for a DOOM fan to mention repetitive gameplay. Single player Dooming has so little variance where mutliplayer Dooming has so much - an imp is always going to slowly and stupidly lumber towards me and occasionally throw a fireball. I'm not shitting on Doom when I say this but, whoop-tee-freakin-doo. Now, on the other hand, a human opponent can totally outsmart me, or I can outsmart them, or they might be better at map knowledge while I'm better at aim, or whatever other various combinations of possibilities. I find it amusing to refer to what is possibly the only gamemode with the potential for "truly surprising" enemy encounters as repetitive when the entire formula of Doom's gameplay is based around easily choreographed, repetitive attacks and behaviors from the monsters. (Not an insult to be clear, having clear and simple rules is not a bad thing). Of course, you get unexpected enemy encounters in SP Doom from playing new maps, so I guess the same basic thrill is achieved by different means. All this is making it sound like I find SP Doom boring, which I certainly do not - I just can't play SP for more than about an hour before I save and move onto something else until tomorrow or later. Perhaps this is the mindset of many MP gamers, they're seeking that thrill of potential unexpected challenges, of course combined with the built-in dopamine release we get from a feeling of friendship or comradery which often forms in more social games. Of course, there's the fools who carry on like in that video Ajora posted.. I can't imagine you win many comrades with that kind of behavior. At least I hope not. Did you grow up with Commander Keen? I don't often say this because it's very silly, but I thought Commander Keen was shit when I was a kid. I mean, I thought the game itself seemed awesome in some ways (referring specifically to Keen 4 and 5, Goodbye Galaxy) but the way that Keen "locks" to the floor when he's walking and that awkward pogo stick control.. I could just never wrap my head around it. I feel like the exact same game but where Keen controls in a more Mario-like fashion would be a blast for me. This has to be another matter of perspective, though. Super Mario Bros was my first platformer ever and I was quite serious about speedrunning it in bygone years, I've never actually met another person who can do a sub 6 minute run on that game, so I guess my opinion is skewed towards it. If I had started with Keen, which was almost as likely since PC and NES were basically my two main funboxes as a kid, I might be nodding along in 100% agreement right now.. Too many games that came out on NES were the best at the little role they filled and have yet to be surpassed, imo. That may sound weird, so I'll give an example: I've always loved the game Joust. It was perfect for what it was, and when I get a wild hair up my ass telling me "you want to play Joust now", no other game can scratch that specific itch. The same applies for many games I love (on a variety of consoles), and of course I could play Joust on some other console, but some titles are NES exclusives and never got better looking reboots or sequels of any kind, so you really can't get that particular thrill you're seeking from any other game - either an NES or an emulator is required at that point! I get random urges to play various games I've enjoyed in the past throughout any given week and I find there's a decently high chance it ends up being an NES game whenever the urge strikes. Now, if some game came along that provided me the same kind of satisfaction and gameplay that Joust does but looked and sounded nicer, and perhaps had more to offer, then I suppose I could give up Joust forever and truly "move on" from it. As it stands, no other game fulfills that exact little niche that Joust does. (Again Joust is just a random example I pulled outta nowhere, you could substitute any number of games in it's place) LOL I get this, and the irony of creating negative-vibes content where you're constantly complaining for years and then ending up depressed is not lost on me, but I think it's gotta be noted that critics are - or, at least were - universally shit on by the masses. It takes nuts to openly express an unpopular opinion, even about something trivial like video games. After all, something being trivial doesn't necessarily prevent people from becoming passionate about it as I'm sure we're all evidence of in one way or another. If someone put hours of effort into making a video just to shit on my bad game, it's kind of flattering. I did something and it got a strong reaction! Yay! Not only that, but from their criticisms I may be able to take notes and build an exponentially better game next time around, avoiding the design pitfalls that my previous game suffered from (at least in the eyes of that critic). Even if they have nothing of value to say, I can still get entertainment out of the nerd rage present in such videos, and the entertainment would be all that much sweeter knowing my creation warranted such a passionate reaction.

    Do you like the Joker?

    I think he's an excellent character but he's definitely getting overused at this point. There have now been at least 5 or 6 different actors portraying the character in big-budget movies/shows, just in my short lifetime - That's total friggin' overkill. The funny thing is, the only one I thought was bad was Leto, and he wasn't actually bad, he was just going up against some serious acting titans and was doomed to being in what was already a crappy film. He's a good actor and he's done really well in other roles. I hope the Joker gets at least 5 years of time off after this, possibly more. Other Batman villains deserve more time, and the existing Joker portrayals aren't even getting any time to sit with us before yet another one comes along! Oh yeah, Harley Quinn is pretty played out at this point as well.

    Damn, Crispy has a lot of features I didn't even know about. As far as I'm aware, no other ports have crosshairs that lock on, they're all completely stationary and unchanging. Vertical recoil is possible in ZDoom-family ports, but it requires modding, I don't think it's a built in option.


    I think Crispy Doom is going to be the only port that has you covered on each of those points, it has everything but the widescreen support. Considering that the port is clearly going well beyond classic vanilla limits, perhaps Fabian would be open to including a toggle between 16:9 and 4:3 in some future build. I don't want to derail the original thread so I decided to respond here, but it couldn't hurt to send Fabian a message / asking him about the possibility of implementing it.

  18. LOL very relatable. I actually remember seeing my dad getting shitty with that spot since you have to walk back through that nukage tunnel to get out, he was practically dead by the end of it. It wasn't until replaying the original Doom in my teens that I realized you could just... Stand on the lift and simply press the switch while standing on it... That's a moment from years later I remember because I felt like such a moron for having struggled with it! I had a similar experience. When I first joined Doom Connector, I was still using the common 1.666 Doom 2 bootleg, but it was unknown to me that it was pirated at the time, so I couldn't join CSDoom/ZDaemon servers. Some kind soul, I think Doom Rampage most likely, sent me v1.9 which took over an hour on the shitternet of that era. It worked for online play so I was happy to have it, but the missing silver jail bars on Map02 led to me thinking that 1.9 was actually a bootleg version, so I kept using the shitty 1.666 bootleg for single player for at least a year or two after that. It didn't take that long for me to get further interested in Doomy stuff and eventually learn my original copy was the shittier version of the two. Why they removed those bars in Map02, we may never know.

    I Want To Finish This Map Very Badly

    As far as I'm aware it's canon to Doom's gameplay that Lost Souls don't count towards kills anyway, at least as of version 1.6 of the engine. A Pain Elemental can and often does spawn them outside the boundary of the map, so getting 100% would be impossible pretty regularly on any map that features PEs near walls, so they're not counted (among other reasons). Don't sweat it.

    Which monsters you have faced as ghosts?

    Theres a bug that renders all enemies on the map as ghosts which has happened to me at least twice over the years. I can't remember exactly what caused it, I edited the maps and suddenly collision was fucked, but it was a simple fix iirc.
  21. Edit: The old PC I first played Wolf on was actually my uncles laptop at the time, a huge beige monstrosity. Even though I was just a babe I remember being obsessed at first sight, all I had seen before that was NES.

    Yes, you can do that. I know it’s possible to make an enemy move while shooting, as long as the enemy such as a Chaingunner calls some ‘chase’ frames between its ‘attacking’ and ‘refire’ frames, it will move while firing. Simple stuff like that can be achieved in both DeHackEd and Decorate.
