    Raymoohawk's sprite edits

I posted this over at ZDoom but I'm posting here too... I really like what you are doing with the slug but I wonder if it might be better still with a bit more contrast? This is just a rough and ready test because I don't have the skills to do it any better but, what do you think? Is it something that should be investigated further? raymoohawk's originals on top, my test below

    Where to release big wad's?

Which I'd gladly pay. I'm on £49 per month for a private microwave link because BT refuse to put anything near our village other than the bare minimum legal requirement of an 7-8 mile long shitty copper wire that allows us to get a "service" that complies with the "minimum standard for telephony" (i.e. a quiet, crackly line that is just clear enough to hear someone's voice and no more).
  4. I'm not sure why Sitters made a model for the Romero head actor. Possibly just to complete the set. Personally, as a set, I like those models (as you might guess with it being my video). Let's be honest, it's very difficult to get models working well with the Doom movement and AI. So I can fully understand when people say "I don't like models in Doom" or "Doom doesn't suit models". Also, I get that people like the spritey appearance of Doom and that's part of the appeal for them. However, I like the fact that Sitters decided to not be entirely faithful to the sprites and that he put his own spin on things a bit. I like the more "wiry" physique of the baron/hell knight, the reasonably hi-res look of the pistol zombies and shotgunners works well IMO and I think the mancubus model is one of the best enemy replacement models to appear in a Doom port. As a set, there is a bit of inconsistency thematically but, on the whole, I do think the models have a nice "alternative re-imagining" element to them and, when combined with the hi-res textures in Risen3D and some well selected maps, the overall effect is very nice IMO.

I suspect that it would be more accurate to say that you are on high bandwidth. My guess is that there are far more people on "low" bandwidth than you think. Perhaps it won't be long until speeds like 25MB/s are the norm but we're not there yet. I'm certainly not. It will be cities first, then towns, then rural areas then the poor saps who live in places where cable companies (etc) don't give a damn because there aren't enough people to make laying a cable commercially viable (i.e. like where I live). Making an optional "lossy" format music download is a sensible way forward. As others have said, with all the other game noise going on, I expect that the quality drop between FLAC and OGG/MP3/Whatever will not be hugely noticeable to most players anyway.

Original DOOM 5.25" floppy Mail Order CIB

Yeah, but the new one has that very flat Windows 8.1 Icon look to it that seems to be that thing these days. :/ I hear you but the problem is as soon as you have people prepared to pay the ludicrous price it (kind of) stops being ludicrous. i.e. things are worth what people are willing to pay. If there are people willing to pay ludicrous prices, then that's what the item is worth and that becomes the going price. :/

Blip.tv Has Shut Down as of August 20, 2015

Depends how you measure success, of course, but it is shutting down. Also, plenty of people never even heard of it, let alone watched anything on it, so it wasn't too good at getting content "out there" versus YouTube.

Yeah, it doesn't really look "buff" enough to be a baron. But it does look reasonably like the baron-like creatures on the original box art.

Brutally, and over simplifying: basically a failed alternative to YouTube.

Is there any FPS easier to map for than Doom?

I did a bit of Duke editing many years ago and I remember finding it more difficult than Doom but not hugely so. Again, like with UT, most of my difficulties came from a lower level of familiarity with the process and the engine and (from what I remember) there were quite a few quirks and special keystrokes in the editor that I never used enough to become fluent with.

    joining mp3s without re-encoding

Related to this question (maybe) does anyone know of a piece of software that can analyse all the mp3 tracks in a folder and then set them to the same effective relative "loudness" without re-encoding? We all know that MP3s from different sources can sound quite different loudness-wise. Basically, I want to be able to throw a bunch of MP3s together in a folder and have them play at volumes that make them seem as if they are part of the same album instead of the levels going up and down between songs. I used to have a program (I forget it's name) that could do the loudness part. It would analyse the files to get a "how it seems to the human ear" kind of value and then set all the tracks to a suitable volume relative to each other. However, it re-encoded the tracks and the loss of quality was noticeable. Maybe it's something that technically can't be done? I don't know enough about the mp3 format to know if re-encoding would be needed when a change in volume has been made. [edit] Hmmm... this might do http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/ [/edit]

Is there any FPS easier to map for than Doom?

I found UT quite a bit harder than Doom to map for. In saying that, some of that will be due to (lack of) familiarity. I didn't do too much with it but it was getting easier as I gained experience. UT is certainly easier to map for than any of the Quake engines though (IMO).

It would have been better but I couldn't find a decent pic of that scene. :(

Also, it's pretty easy to fix. Simply selecting the area and lightening it a bit makes it all but invisible (in Paint Shop Pro lightening by about 33 works pretty well).

Doom Wiki should get a new name IMO

Thar would be better but what would make it "official"? Who has the power to grant it "official" status?

    People Still Use Boom?

Cool. I'll maybe dig out a copy of BOOM and fire it up for old time's sake. :D

    People Still Use Boom?

I stopped using BOOM a long time ago when it started to become difficult to run under certain environments (I think that would have been before DOSBox was a thing - or as widely known about). By that time, I'd moved on to Windows based ports for most of my playing anyway. How easy is it to get BOOM working these days? Does it work well enough under DOSBox?

Playing Doom with just the keyboard

I started playing Doom using the keyboard only (and Wolf3D before that). In fact, I also used to use that setup for Quake and even much of my early Quake 2 playing too. I guess it would have been something like UT or Thief that finally got me using a mouse properly. Although Vanilla Doom supports the mouse, I have never found it comfortable to play using a mouse. However, with games that allow you to look up/down/around mlook is essential to my way of playing these days. One of the reasons that I don't play much vanilla Doom or vanilla-like ports is that I no longer like playing without the mouse but I still find a non-mlook setup awkward when using a mouse.

Doomworld is dead, long live Doomworld

FTFY Unless you want information about a ZDaemon or Zandronum event, the front page has precious little news these days (something that has already been raised in this thread).

Doom Wiki should get a new name IMO

Personally, I think that also smacks of "not really real". And, in some ways, that's correct because the whole point of "The Real" in that case was, I think, because there was another Ghostbusters franchise that pre-dated the Bill Murray (etc) movie and was nothing to do with the Ghostbusters that we all know. "The Real" was to distinguish it from the other, unrelated, older IP after a copyright dispute IIRC.
