  1. Hey all, I have a question with regards to map planning and layout design. I have a difficult time starting maps. I come up with a plan for the map, how I want it to progress, how I want to set up encounters and such. My problem come when it's time to start mapping in the editor. Not in terms of how to do XYZ - I have a pretty good feel for the editor and how to incorporate various things. It's more with regards to building that first room or area. I've asked some well known mappers and most seem to not sketch out the layout ahead of time. For those of you who are more experienced, do you just start throwing down sectors? Do you usually have a layout planned out before you start mapping? I don't know if it's a lack of imagination in my case, but just trying to figure out how you guys approach building those first rooms in the map and going from there.

what are you working on? I wanna see your wads.

Got some updated screenshots of my upcoming WAD. The theme is a military compound located on Jupiter's moon, Europa. This is intended to be the first of a small (4-5 maps) set. Figure I'd get started on smaller projects before jumping into doing megawads or anything crazy like that. I am new to mapping and this is my first WAD so I'm still trying to experiment with architecture and visual design of the map as well as implementing good gameplay mechanics. Tons of iterations on interations, but hopefully I'll get better over time. Still a work in progress and I haven't fully detailed the outside areas yet. PS: I turned down the brightness this time :-p

Thanks guys for the great feedback. Sorry about the image brightness. I play with the brightness up to aid visibility, so that's why it's increased. I'll be sure to lower it in the future.

This is my first map ever. Almost nervous sharing this. I've had a hard time coming up with something I'm satisfied with, but here are some screenshots that I have so far. Still a work in progress and I'm not done detailing or finalizing it yet. Intended to be the first map in a 3-4 map WAD.

Ultimate Doom: Episode 1 Nightmare! Guide (Video)

Anyone who can beat E4 on Nighmare! without tricks and saves has my respect. I'm certainly not good enough to do it and it seems borderline impossible.

Ultimate Doom: Episode 1 Nightmare! Guide (Video)

BFG Grab with the jump past the Blue door is pretty much the easiest way to beat E4M2 on NM. It's tough though, that's for sure.

Ultimate Doom: Episode 1 Nightmare! Guide (Video)

Thanks for the feedback guys! I will be posting an E2 video soon. I have it recorded and just need to find the time to do the commentary over it. As for E4, I will try to do it at some point. It's the hardest episode to run on NM and I'm not really consistent at it yet. I'll post it when I figure out a decent way to get it done consistently. E4M1, E4M2 and E4M6 are very tough as you can imagine.

Tactical or assault: Which one are you?

A bit of both. If the map is easy I'll usually go in guns blazing. If the level is really difficult, then I'll obviously take it slower and try be more tactical. If a map is really beautiful or interesting, then I may take my time to soak it all in. Ancient Aliens and Sunlust are good for that.

Ultimate Doom: Episode 1 Nightmare! Guide (Video)

I'mm glad you liked it! Doom 2 is a maybe, if I ever find a way to reliably beat it on NM. Wouldn't count on Final Doom though, haha. I'm presently extremely busy, but I'll get the next few parts up as soon as I can.
  10. I know that a lot of people struggle with Nightmare! so I wanted to try and post some of the strategies that I use to get through it. This is for Episode 1 of Ultimate Doom and is a single segment run minus messing up with the Rocket Launcher on E1M8. Most people, myself included, don't have the skill necessary to use the strategies used in top quality speed runs. As a more casual, average player, these have helped me. Hopefully you can find some use for them as well! https://youtu.be/cbta7wnEgeA

How much of a 'Doom Master' are you?

Also, Doom E4 gets considerably easier if you do the Red Key grab on E4M1 and the BFG grab in E4M2. In terms of NM difficulty, E4 is definitely the hardest though followed by E1. E2 and E3 are relatively easy on NM. Once you get a few tricks down, E1 isn't even too bad. The tricky spots (E1M3, E1M5, end of E1M6 and E1M7) all have little strats that you can use to get past them relatively consistently (as consistently as you can get in the chaos that is NM). Maybe I'll make a more casual NM guide for Ultimate Doom at some point. I don't know of any that exists.

That's very nice of you haha. I don't feel like a good DOOM player though, especially when watching people beat DOOM II on NM in 22 minutes while I get all sweaty trying to beat DOOM episodes slowly.

How much of a 'Doom Master' are you?

Maybe average? I don't typically try to speedrun, but I like to play UV-Fast and Nightmare! somewhat regularly. UV for the most of the iWADS is generally too easy for me at this point (for casual play) although Plutonia is still a good callenge. I've single segmented all 4 Doom episodes on Nightmare and am working on trying to do a single segment for DOOM II at some point. My runs look like garbage compared to someone like Zero Master though.
  14. I see. Have you have considered doing other PWADS like Alien Vendetta?
  15. I'd also like to congratulate you on your run. I had been looking forward to this one after your Plutonia NM run. What are your plans now after this?
