  1. Blog title says it all, considering its a stock device, I thought I would get some opinions on it before potentially damaging anything. All your input is appreciated.

Edit: Heh, doesn't even look like its possible anymore, can't find any setting allowing me to overclock in my BIOs.

It just seems odd to me that something as precise as 20nm transistor production would be left to such a hit-and-miss process.

When new, smaller manufacturing processes are first taped out, the reliability of some of the dies being produced is usually suspect, because not all the bugs of the manufacturing process have been worked out. If a die in these early stages is found to have a defect, it is more profitable to simply make a less-capable processor out of it, rather than scrap it entirely. As the manufacturing process improves, yields inevitably go up, but there is still a demand for these neutered processors, and it's not cost effective to design an entirely new die for them. Therefore, perfectly functional cores get disabled to make these processors at a lower price point. And of course any dies with non-functional cores are used in the same way, as it was at first; there are simply less of them. So your chances of having a good disabled core go up as the length of time of chips being manufactured on that process goes up.

      That does make sense. Cool.

In some cases GFX cards get the treatment as well:

  2. Does anyone know how to get Daggerfall (TES 1) working on an x64 bit machine? We tried DOSBox only for the game to have an incredibly low frame-rate. Googled everything, still no luck. Has anyone done this before?

TES.com gives it away for free I do believe.

Dosbox won't give you an incredibly low frame rate if it's set up properly.. and if your machine is fast enough.

Have you tried increasing the memsize value in your Dosbox config to something higher than 16? This is a pretty easily overlooked thing that could solve a lot of framerate issues. You can also try adjusting how many cycles are used by dosbox at any given time, but leaving that set on auto for more intensive dos games usually does the trick.

Dosbox has really come a long way from its roots and 0.74 is powerful enough to run almost any Dos game without any real trouble.. as long as your machine has enough horsepower.

Yeah the machine definitley is powerful enough (way overpowered if you ask me) and I'll try the config solution, thanks.

  3. I haven't slept fully in almost a week, didn't fall asleep at all last night as well. Ugh.

Something bothering you? Going to bed feeling like something isn't done? Might be something else you need to resolve.

Seriously, besides my habit of staying up late surfing the internet or mapping until 4 am, this is why I sometimes get to bed and stay up thinking until 4/5 am. Get shit done fast. Reading a book also seems to help me, probably because of the escapism from focusing on another world/persons' cares, that are probably down to 2-3 big things compared to the sometimes 10+ I worry at. Another thing to do is you could set an alarm at midnight (mine is on my cellphone), to tell yourself you should probably go to sleep soon, maybe give yourself just an hour to finish what you're doing.

Despite all that, you could have something like dsps, in variable severity.

Hmm, I'll look into this, considering for the past while I've mostly been falling asleep around 6 - 7 AM, and thanks for all the input, everyone.

  4. I pretty much just wanted to cancel my XBL Gold Membership which I previously could do before from their website. I was granted no option to turn off automatic renewal, and the only option I had was to upgrade my account for 60$. I even tried to remove all payment methods from my account just for it to tell me "Error: Payment method in use", no shit its in use, thats why I dont want it enabled.

Anyways, turns out now if you want to cancel your gold account you must call support and wait on hold for 2 hours now to "verify some information", long story short I will be getting a charge next month for a service I'm not even using, even though I canceled my account.

Well I seem to be able to do it on both the Xbox and the site but I'm not sure because I don't have automatic renewal enabled.

Yeah, they only don't let you change it if automatic renewal is enabled for some reason. The automatic renewal option is stuck to "On".

Unless they changed it, there's a way to disable automatic renewal from the XBOX.com website. Though from what I recall they try really hard to try and get you not to by showing some really annoying ads or some such crap.

It kind of reminds me of the horror stories of people who have tried desperately to cancel their AOL accounts... though I guess if you OPENED an AOL account in the first place, you probably deserve it.

  5. Finally made my avatar fish in Photoshop. What do you guys think of it?

Just wondering, but your 15 right? (Just wondering, I dont remember :P)

      Yes sadly. :(

I like to think of myself as a little bit more mature than most 15 year old's out here on the internets (George Bush pun lol) and irl; but maybe it's just a big ego on my part. :P

Also, I think I may be the youngest person on here (Doomworld), or at least tied with someone age-wise.

I respect your opinion and trust that it'll change with time and greater experience, like mine did with Halo, Goldeneye... and most of the other forgettable fad games out there.

I'll admit I thought you were a lot older that that.
