    dsda-doom v0.27.5 [2023-12-03]

    I use a widescreen status bar in a WAD I put together myself with Hexen in DSDA and it’s still working as of the latest version. It doesn’t extend the full length of the screen but has additional wing graphics on the gargoyles at the ends that extend out beyond the traditional 4:3 format. Is this what you’re looking for or is it a different issue?

    Late to the party on this one as I hadn't realised there was a new thread, but thank you SO much for making those fixes to Hexen (animated mid textures, music). This means DSDA will now be my go-to port for everything!
  3. DSDA-Doom for me as it achieves the dream scenario of a Boom-based port which also includes Heretic and Hexen support.

    Where should I buy Doom 64?

    If you’re wanting to play on PC, definitely GOG. DRM-free and allows you to download standalone installers that can be backed up. I try to buy from GOG exclusively these days if at all possible.
  5. As many have already said I think it’s a matter of perspective. With thousands of hours of play and countless custom WADs under our belts in 2023, all of the original boss levels seem a bit underwhelming. Back in the mid-‘90s as a keyboard-only kid though, they were all pretty memorable and awe-inspiring at the time. These days the Icon of Sin is just an overly-simplistic face on a wall, but my younger self thought it was the coolest thing ever.

    What are you playing now?

    I just recently finished up AUGER;ZENITH and Anomaly Report, and am now half-way through my first (and long overdue) playthrough of Eviternity. In the closing stages of MAP32 currently, which has been quite the ordeal (great map though)!

    I've just discovered a bug with Heretic support - when using the v1.0 WAD (i.e. the three-episode version), only episodes 1 and 2 appear on the selection menu (although e3 can be warped to). Not sure if this also affects the v1.2 WAD as I don't have it, and this probably won't be an issue for most as I expect everyone is using the Shadow of the Serpent Riders (v1.3) version, but just thought I'd mention it for compatibility's sake.
  8. The bloody homing Revenant missiles. No matter how many thousands of hours I’ve put into these games over the years nothing makes me panic more than a group of Revenants pouring out of a recently opened door with no cover in sight. Also a Pain Elemental blasting a Lost Soul straight at me the second I fire a rocket.

    Sure, sorry, my comment probably wasn't that helpful. To be honest at the moment these are the main two things I've noticed - as they were fairly noticeable early on in the game I assumed they'd probably be known already and as there was likely some way to go with the implementation and haven't attempted to play through the entire game. I appreciate though that Hexen isn't that popular and as such many people aren't familiar with or or just aren't that bothered. The fact you've even supported it at all is fantastic for those of us who enjoy the game! I will look to carry out some more thorough testing to see if I can find anything else obviously wrong with Hexen's current state. In the mean time though, to clarify on the points already mentioned: - As with Doom and Heretic, there is supposed to be music playing on the title screen/main menu. Currently this doesn't work, although music playback within the game is completely fine. I tried both vanilla Hexen and with the Deathkings expansion pack and neither works. I did notice the following error in the command window that runs in the background, maybe this explains it? - Certain textures (I don't know what the correct term of these kind of objects is in Hexen) which should be animated currently don't work properly. For example these portals that appear frequently throughout the game just display one static frame: - Similarly, at the start of each hub Korax appears in fire and says something to the player. Currently only parts of this animate properly (when the face appears and dissappears). The flames in the background are supposed to move constantly but currently stay static outside of the two working parts of the animation. I hope that helps. As I say I will continue playing and see if I spot anything else.

    Really glad to see a new release of DSDA-Doom - I bloody love this port! I know Hexen implementation is a way from being complete, but there are a few very obvious issues at the moment (no title screen music, hub start Korax faces not animating for example) and I’m wondering if there’s a rough timeline for getting Hexen into a fully functional state? Once that’s happened I doubt I’ll have much use for any other ports.

    Great stuff! Really glad to have the OpenGL renderer available in Heretic now. I love these ports but for some reason I get weird periodic frame-dropping issues with the D3D renderer that I haven't been able to eliminate no matter what I try (vsync on or off, various levels of framerate capping). No such issues with the OpenGL one though. I know I asked this last release, but will International Hexen get an update soon with the OpenGL renderer in place?

    What was the first Doom source port you have used?

    Assuming we’re not counting Doom95, the first actual source port from the community I used was jDoom (Doomsday Engine for you younger folk), around the early-mid 2000s. At the time I was all about the graphical enhancements it brought to the table, plus mouselook etc. The fact there were also versions for Heretic and Hexen was a major selling point as well. I have vague memories of installing Doom Legacy at some point when I was younger, but at that time I was still just using the DOS executable and didn’t really understand or appreciate the benefits of a source port. These days my preference is for a much more vanilla-esque experience and I’ve not touched Doomsday for getting on twenty years.

    What were the first three PWADs you downloaded?

    In terms of downloads I’m not sure, but the earliest PWADs I can remember playing were from the “Deathday” CD-ROM put out by Microforum, which I got from a rack of games in a branch of Staples (right next to the “Titanium Seal” shareware disks 🤘). This was several years before we had an internet connection at home. I spent hours trawling through the contents of that CD. At the time I only owned Doom 1.666. The main PWADs I can remember playing were classics like UAC_DEAD, Cleimos, Galaxia, the Trinity College map, and a something called “Yak World” which had some ridiculous custom sounds that were amazing to my 10-year-old self.
  16. As far as the console ports go, fine, but I’ve definitely seen more than one YouTuber proclaim it to be the best version, including over the PC original (usually with some reasoning based around the soundtrack).
  17. The main peeve I have these days, although not limited to certain sections of YouTube, are the number of people I see claiming that the PlayStation port of Doom is the “best version” of the game.
  18. Out of very old-fashioned habit I have each of my source ports located in their own folder in my root directory, and a folder (also in the root) for all my of WADs. This is subdivided into IWADs, PWADs, “official” PWADs for things like NRFTL and Deathkings of the Dark Citadel (I have no good explanation as to why I do this), and resource WADs like widescreen assets etc. The PWADs are all in their own subfolders within these. I then use a launcher and a load of saved configurations to pair WADs with source ports and play.

    Just to confirm I also used Nash’s resources, and the glitching I mentioned is identical to those screenshots. I checked the quietus and it’s fine.

    A very good point and I don't know why I didn't try it. I've just checked and the same issues are present when the aspect ratio is set to 4:3, so I guess there's no bug with the widescreen mode. Perhaps it is my WAD file after all? As I say, it works fine in other ports I've used it with, but maybe I've made a mistake somewhere.     One thing I've noticed and can't seem to pin down a cause for is that I'm experiencing frequent (although seemingly random) microstuttering issues, particularly in Inter-Doom. I'm definitely not on a low-end PC by any means, and Inter-Doom is reporting pretty stable frame rates, but for some reason I'm getting pretty regular and very obvious split-second stutters during play. I've been experimenting with every possible combination of frame capping and v-sync, both in-game and in my graphics card settings, but nothing seems to make a difference. I usually cap at 60fps, but am able to achieve much higher rates than this with no issue. The stuttering persists whatever I set the cap to. I haven't experienced this with any other source ports and I'm at a bit of a loss now.

    Crispy Doom 6.0 (Update: Mar 31, 2023)

    Great to see Crispy Hexen back, and with widescreen support now too. Hoping uncapped framerate might be implemented at some point. One minor issue I've noticed: I have a small WAD I created containing the Hexen widescreen assets which I like to load in as the original sprites for certain weapons are otherwise massively cut off in widescreen mode. However, the fighter's axe and hammer, as well as the cleric's mace, don't display correctly when attacking for some reason (the axe and hammer are drawn too high up the screen for a frame or two, and the mace is glitchy for a frame or so). This WAD works correctly with DSDA-Doom and GZDoom, so I'm assuming the bug is with Crispy Hexen somewhere.

    The most annoying doom enemy

    It's difficult to decide. On the one had I'm tempted to say the Revenant because of the dreaded homing rockets, but at least they can be fun to fight in the right circumstances. Lost Souls on the other hand are just a complete ballache to deal with in any situation.

    Best way to launch your game (on Windows)

    I use the Rocket Launcher 2.0 frontend, which is fairly simple but has some nice features. The biggest advantage of this for me is that it allows you to save configs for all of your WAD/source port combinations (plus command line arguments) as a list within the program for easy loading. There are a couple of QoL improvements it could do with, but otherwise it's my preferred solution.
