So I'm in my brother's room when I see the play mat he got in his Scourgewar WoW TCG box set. He says it was useless since the cards don't all fit on it. I asked him if I could have it and he said sure and I'm like hell yes. You're not a play mat. No, you're just a big-ass mousepad.

Okay for a while I've been trying to pick out parts to build me an gaming rig. Right now what I'm going for is to be able to play Bad Company 2 in 1680x1050 on medium settings at 60 fps. Here's my preliminary list:
cpu
video card
monitor
hard drive
motherboard
ram
case
power supply
disk drive
os
Right now, with shipping and stuff, this would run me about $1100. I know I could probably spend much less, but I'm still new to this. I know I could probably go cheaper on some of the components but if I'm going to have a 5770 in there I want to treat her right.
Any suggestions?
edit: changed to am3 processor, ddr3 ram, caviar black hard drive, corsair power supply- Show previous comments 26 more

Use a power supply calculator to work out how much actual wattage you need under max load, and get something at least 25% better than that. I dunno about Corsair, but the three good Antec models (TruePower, NeoPower, EarthWatts) remain in their efficiency range up to their sticker rating and can supply ~100W more without breaking a sweat. I have one of these, total overkill for my shitbox but awesome future-proof investment.
Fact: DDR2 is more efficient if operating at bus speeds 800MHz and below. DDR3 is more efficient if operating faster. Base your choice off this, plus the fact that a DDR3/AM3 board is likely to have USB3 which will be cool when fast thumbdrives become available.
I have two WD Green Powers and they are fine. Faster than the other 2-yearold Seagate 7200RPM drives I have. They operate at a fixed spindle speed per model (ie: all 1Tb drives run at the same speed, all 2Tb drives run at the same speed, but a different speed to 1Tb drives) which WD do not disclose but acoustic testing shows them all to operate between 5000 and 7200rpm. Blacks are faster. If you're going multiple drives, I'd get a Black for OS/apps and Green for data storage.
The case is listed as Unavailable so I can't see the price, but how good is it? After purchasing an Antec P182B I can't stress how nice it is to have a really good, quiet, cool case. This particular one has the drives in a separate air area to the rest, this is important to me as it gets really hot here and I was starting to cook drives during summer. It's a $200 case but so worth it.
Nice CPU, not sure I'm sold on the mobo. There's probably a better Asus or Gigabyte board out there for only a few bucks more. Read overclocker reviews on these. Even if you're not overclocking, you want something that's capable and resistant so it doesn't die within a couple of years.
If you're not overclocking, why bother with the Black Edition? You could save some cash getting something with fixed bus. -
People said stuff about :
Activation
That's why cracked/VLK releases are for. Even if legally own XP and Vista, I prefer using "overcl0xx0rz 1337 h4xx0rz" releases to avoid the PITA of reactivating. Do a handful of "major" changes like GFX, RAM disk and you're out, not good if you are constantly experimenting with hardware like me.
Since they shoved a copy of XP (and now Vista/7) down yo ass every time you buy a new laptop, you might as well use an up-to-date VLK slipstreamed installation with the latest SP, instead of a shitty "system restore" disk or a wimpy, service pack 0 level POS that needs phone activation. The license has been paid for anyway.

Since I got my new mouse I decided to run through Doom 2 on Skill 1 again (I still suck).
Anyway I have more respect for it now but I still like Doom 1 a bit better.
Levels I still hate
Downtown
Monster Condo
Levels I like more now
Tricks and Traps
Industrial Zone
Levels that are still great
The Citadel
The Chasm
The Living End
Icon of Sin
I'm thinking next I should play through on Skill 2 or 3. Or should I just jump to Skill 4 and roll with it? -
Hah! Now that I got all you free software hippies in here, I can tell you all that as of 40 minutes ago (at least where I'm rollin' in the GMT -5) I am 19 years old.
I'm getting Steam's id Super Pack. Go ahead and tell me how bad Steam is and that it's a waste. I don't care. I'm excited.
Oh and my grandad's getting me some Microsoft points so I can get Doom 2 when it's released on XBLA.- Show previous comments 22 more

The data files are accessible; you can do whatever you want with them. Steam pretty much just installs the games to its internal folder.
Keen/Doom/Wolf3d actually run in DOSBox, and each has its own copy of DOSBox in it. Steam still launches the games in the same way you might launch them yourself, but you can tell they weren't expecting you to tweak anything behind the scenes. For example, Doom lacks a setup utility. If you want to change the controls, you'll have to find the number for each button and edit the config yourself.
heh. I Kind of expected this. -
Happy birthday DuckReconMajor!
You want to hear about the birth of DRM? DRM was invented by a cartel of shady media guys in suits in order to compensate for their idealistic bankruptcy, their lack of business creativity and total inability to provide actual value to consumers, in the internet age, without ripping them off. They cannot find ways to compete in a market that's overwhelming them (it's a better deal to watch a DVDRip than it is to actually buy a copy of the DVD what with all the unskippable and now mythical "You wouldn't steal a loaf of bread" propaganda ads - curiously enough those were originally made in Portugal, for the Portuguese market) because it provides so much better prices, then coerce the software and electronics manufacturers (disregard this if you're thinking Sony, they're all the same kind of wretched scum no matter what subsidiary they come from) into intentionally crippling their products in order to maintain their profit margin stupidly high, while reducing the coverage of the actually provided services. All this encased in a "consumer protection" façade which goes to show how perfidious the music and film industries are, because it's actually not that different from racketeering. And consumerism is how they poison us.

I was going to play through the Halo games and then get Reach and play it online. I'm halfway through 2 when I decide I'd rather try just for once and get a game when it comes out to jump online in its opening days.
I decided to go ahead and get Black Ops when it comes out. I also want to get a headset. I think I want to get the Turtle Beach X11 headset. I hear that it's not quite worth the $60 price tag but I really want the thing that lets you hear yourself talk and I don't know of any other set that does that.
Another thing I'd like to bring up is that after using the FPS Freeks for several months I learned a couple things. I had one on the right stick but not one on the left (as seen here). For some reazon I was annoyed by that so I took it off. That was worse. Then I took the one off the PS3 controller and put it on the left stick and put the right back on. It instantly felt much better. I think I'm really getting the full benefit of them for some reason. They stick really feel like joysticks instead of stupid analog rubbers. Yay!
This brings me to my second point. I bought a second set of FPS Freeks, this time Viper Ultras. I got them and found that they have 3 clasps instead of the usual six. I immediately knew the reason for this and as I suspected this cuts down quite a bit on the amount of contact the attachments make with the face button disc on the PS3's DualShock. If you roll the stick around the edge of the hole you will know what I mean. So yeah, if you have a PS3, go with either black or Viper Ultra.
I hope Fisk reads Blogs. This isn't addressed to him but I would like to hear his o-pinion.

Back to using one FPS Freek on the right stick. God, I'm an idiot. Sorry Use3D for leading you otherwise.
It's okay, I got a pair of vipers since my two didn't match (was making me nuts), and have been using both for a while. I find tracking targets while moving in BC2 is easier, but it could very well be my imagination. I know I'll be keeping the right one regardless.

Yes, that's right, the man behind DuckReconMajor has passed into his second decade of existence. Got some great stuff like
- Masters of Doom
BioShock (found and played the PC demo and decided it was time to finally get it)
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (came bundled with BioShock)
Singularity (surprised to hear they actually made this work, plus Raven got screwed on this one and I felt bad)
3200 Microsoft Points (using them for Limbo and Halo 1)
MTG 2011 Core booster pack (just got into this recently) -
Nope, a degree in Computer Science will not change my playing habits. It will, however, make me feel smug around all those liberal arts majors who wouldn't date me.
Unlike Snakes, you don't get a picture of my sister, but here's a picture with my brother to make up for it.

Since I had to learn advanced Automata theory, It took me a year longer than it should have.
We did intro to theoretical computer science, where we did automata and turing machines and whatnot. There were like five of us who were lucky enough to get it and got As on everything while everyone else failed every assignment. They were smart people too, I felt bad. Once you get it though and start to enjoy them you feel so nerdy, heh.
A funny story, the professor let the people who failed one test retake it the following class while those who got As didn't have to come that day. He tells the people in the retake that the next class is cancelled. So the people who didn't retake all showed up and would have waited for a long time had someone not been nice enough to stay back and tell everyone.darkreaver said:Congrats, man.
I`m going back to school this autumn (maybe next autumn if I`m unlucky). Yay, only 3 (actually 4) years of studying and little money to look forward to. Good thing I`m so young, ONLY 29! haha :(Most of the people I went to school with were in their late 20s. Unless it's some fancy-pants college where your course schedule is written out for you at the beginning and living on campus is all but mandatory, someone your age going to school is pretty much normal.
Maes said:That's quite an unusual occurrence today. In some markets, in particular Java programming, employers look for knowledge of specific frameworks (Spring, Hibernate, Struts and MVC frameworks in general) and "proven experience" using them, so showing an "off topic" portfolio (e.g. showing DIP applications for a web framework position, which unfortunately are the majority) and even a "willingness to learn" and "ability to pick up things real quick" isn't going to work .
From what I've heard, that kind of stuff is asked for, but not for entry level positions. I could be wrong though.

So yes, being someone who will eat anything and likes black coffee, I thought I could save a bit of money on caffeine.
It was like eating pencil shavings. I was buzzed but I spent the next couple of hours trying not to vomit.
Went on to discover the wonders of the caffeine pill. -

Many general-purpose data-recovery programs have names referring to recovering photos, as that is what a lot of people tend to need them for ("OMG I accidentally deleted all the photos on my chip!"). They're useful for lots of other things though.
I find it's always useful to have a copy of PhotoRec on my computer when I'm travelling, as every so often you do meet some distraught soul who doesn't realize that deleted files aren't really deleted.

General anesthesia for wisdom teeth is pointless. You might as well do it for a normal extraction for all the benefit there is. In my experience the wisdom tooth extractions were painless under local, and that includes the one that was buried sideways underneath the gum. The only other reason to be asleep is the crackling sound that vibrates through your jaw when the dentist is breaking the tooth into pieces. The extraction is followed by several days of dull, aching pain. That would be the correct time to be comatose.

After like 50 coins, 112 stages, and 1 1/2 hours, I finally squeaked past DAD's score and got out before it could roll over. It makes me giddy to think that when someone fires up Galaga on that machine he'll be looking at my score at the top. And now, provided I have a recaptured fighter, I've learned how to get a perfect score on most Challenging Stages.
I also just learned that if you play as Player 2, it gives you an extra digit for score. So if DAD gets mad and decides to make a comeback, I've got a surprise for him :}
Oh, in case you're wondering, this is a Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga - Class of '81 machine, and if you haven't inferred this yet, I'm GT.
Have you ever put a top score on an arcade cabinet?- Show previous comments 10 more

I have never played Galaga.
I'm sorry.
Maes said:Not at all. If we're talking about real arcade machines without CMOS backup or emulators without high-score saving, then it's normal that the high scores are lost when the machines are powered down. Very few arcade machines made before 1997 saved high scores - the norm was them being purely RAM & ROM affairs.
Actually, I liked "ephemeral" vanity tables best, at least for frequently played/popular games: every day the situation changed, so you had to be a regular in a given room to keep your name up high.
There were slow days, sure, but it avoided situations where a vanity table would be filled with closely tied scores that were impossible to get past (e.g. game-completion scores in Puzzle Bobble were all pretty close save for a few digits).Good point. In my case, however, I'm glad it's the way it is. This machine is in the arcade room at Great Wolf Lodge Virginia. I go there maybe 2-3 times a year and it's the only thing there I really enjoy doing.

Yeah, that thread basically explains why I never beat it. I have beaten every level of it individually, but I've never actually done it from start to finish. In my defense, I have beaten all the episodes of The Ultimate Doom multiple times.
Also lol @ bucket's signature. Where the Hell does that come from?

Hey Doomworld it's been a while I know.
I got back into the computer building game for a little while but decided to go ahead and just buy what I had before I let myself lose motivation and put it on the back burner again. I know this made for some probably poor choices but whatever. It's built.

What I already had:
Dell U2312HM for the really low input lag
I've got a G400 with a MX518 shell put onto it (the G400 surface slips out of my hand).
Pics:
- I got the DirectCU II version of the 680. It takes up three expansion slots in the back.
- No one told me the case was this big! Next to a slim Xbox 360 for comparison.
- Overall view
The cherry brown keyboard is awesome but I'm not liking the tactile bump as much as I thought I would. It makes typing great but I just feel that double taps are kind of annoying with it. Might try a red at some point.
I've still got stock cooler on the 3570K. I'm a terrible person I know. I'll overclock in the future but didn't want to worry about it right then. This guy at work is trying to convince me to get a Corsair closed loop water cooler. I'm considering buying a Corsair H100i. What do you guys think?
Go ahead and joke on my choice of Windows 8. It's not terrible after getting used to and with the SSD the system boots up in 5 seconds flat.
I know my cables are a mess, but what's pictured is cleaned up from the even worse mess it was before. If I put the 24 pin bundle and the one that goes to the CPU through the holes, I can't get the back panel back on. Any ideas?
I just know this thing better support the damn shaders GZDoom needs to do the lighting right.- Show previous comments 6 more

Interesting, I didn't know Asus also made GeForce cards (I thought it was NVidia's property). Does this mean they support CUDA programs?
Lots of different manufacturers make Nvidia and ATI cards based on the "reference" designs. Sometimes they are identical to the spec, sometimes they come factory overclocked with things like bigger fans, etc.

It says "File a claim for ANY PRIZE at any Lottery Customer Service Center", but I don't know if that means any retailer or that office I'd have to drive for half an hour to get to (by which time I'd probably spend most of it on gas).
Anyway, I was considering going out tonight to see but I'll just do it tomorrow. Thanks anyway. -
I play fortune cookie numbers for fun. I got a cookie at the mall and it had two fortunes in it so I was like EXTRA LUCKY so I ran to the machine there and stuck a $10 in, too stupid to realize the machine doesn't give change. So among the many tickets bought I did a Power Play on my sister's boyfriend's numbers which got the Powerball number right.
Still have the Mega Millions drawing tonight, heh.

After taking the summer off I began applying to what will be my first job (I never worked in high school or college). I was prepared for a long and stressful job hunt, but my first application led to an interview which led to a job offer. Later this month I will start work as a software developer.
Good luck to everyone looking for a job. Keep your head up, crazy stuff happens.-

Dilbert-like atmospheres never bothered me. My dad would take me to work when I was younger so I was practically raised in one. Besides, all I do is sit at my computer all day anyway.
The place I'll be working is more of a lab environment though, so I'm not quite working the cubicle farm yet.
