This is now the official skeleton thread

I don't know what the purpose of this thread is but I want in on it
  2. Is that meant to be a crude vagina in space?

So do you guys like Wolfenstein 3D?

The movement system is sub-elementary, really. Let alone view bobbing, there's zero metering of movement apart from the mouse multiplier in the options (which entailed some jerkiness -- I recall mention of correcting "premature integralisation" for the iPhone port, don't know if related). Using DOS mouse driver TSRs from the day like DMOUSE meant you could bump up the sensitivity to spastic values and go from one end of a very long hallway to another instantaneously. No input filtering either -- if you're up against a wall it will retrigger the subtle push-on-wall sound just as quickly as it receives events. That's what I've observed in DOSBox, anyway.

Things about Doom you just found out

It really does. The whole ambience of it overall conveys shellshock/nausea to me. I hear a car going out of control when he puts the drums in retrograde around 1:11 - 1:34. Makes me think of the first time I saw the convulsing human torsos the Strogg reappropriated for their machinery in Quake 4... it'd be a total mindfuck to listen to if you were high.

Things about Doom you just found out

I was transcribing some of D_E1M1 in Sibelius for my own amusement yesterday -- I wanted to experiment with the bassline a bit. It suddenly hit me like a ton of bricks why every remake, cover and precedent of it just doesn't have the same groove. The track is stylistically in several pies; it's rock, with a textbook rock beat, that's played like heavy metal but in 12-bar blues form. The main motif has all the grungy hallmarks of metal, but with one difference: in each pair of low Es, the first is half the duration of the second. In the context of heavy metal, that sequence should be interpreted as a palm-mute, then an open bottom E. That's what makes it a bit fruity, because it diverts the focus from the tonic/root note (which is like 'headbang HQ' for any rock/metal track) to the melody (which itself is ambiguous because it barely falls on the beat). The natural inclination in metal is to palm-mute both bottom Es to emphasise the melody. The groove I can't escape hearing is one of lurching/hanging over the beat. It's a technique I think Bobby Prince played around with further in D_E2M2. I believe he described it as a car going out of control...?

For me there's only a modicum of nostalgia, and it's mostly associated with quirky fascinations (eg. the DeIce installer, the way the game lit up faux LEDs like a mixing desk to indicated successfully initialised hardware, and that enchanting SoundBlaster FM synth tone) as well as the halo-effect nostalgia of the other popular DOS classics of the time. What really kill the mood every time I consider a Wolf3D marathon on a rainy day are the death sounds. I wince every time I hear "mein leben!" -- the voice acting sounds like a best-2-outta-3 deal, and might have been passable in 1992 on SB16s with shitty earbuds, but now the sample clipping is painfully obvious and detracts from any atmosphere it might otherwise entertain. It also just feels embarrassing to play, even by myself, for that reason. Sounds that close to human dialogue just can't afford to be that repetitive. Similarly, any time I install Unreal Tournament, bot taunts are off immediately. Then there was the time I started playing it in front of a good friend of my mother, not realising she'd been a prisoner of war. That memory doesn't help.
  7. UTC time would also be really handy for us 'international' players.

Music/Media Players- what should I use?

Reasonable to assume I'm American given no basis of heritage; false. :P In defense of their porn though, even with anal sex the emphasis is on the exploitation/debasement of women rather than homoeroticism. I imagine there'd be little market for ancient Greek style gay porn because it would be far too loving and not edgy enough for the modern soulless American.

Music/Media Players- what should I use?

This made me laugh because Greeks, while known for anal desire, are not known for tautology.

Wait, what? Maybe not out of the box, but you only need to format it manually (ie. in Disk Utility) and you're free to copy files adlib.

Music/Media Players- what should I use?

Depends really on how flexible you want it. If you're not focused on building a media library, VLC is a good option. If you want a dedicated music player but don't care about customisation I recommend iTunes, or if you want extreme customisation go with Foobar2000. Some of the things people do with Foobar are quite impressive - check out their forums.

    Friday the 13th

That could have happened quite easily given both that I have a neurotic black cat and that there was a mirror directly underneath the ladder :P

    Friday the 13th

Of all days that I would be walking under a ladder, it was Friday 13th. It was by the front door from the 12th to today (17th) until we got round to cleaning the windowsill above it. I rarely have anything to do with ladders.

    Grievances Thread

Even worse, sometimes people just don't get my txts at all. At first I thought it was because people couldn't be bothered replying and didn't want to admit it… various situations have proven this not so, even with people on the same mobile network. I've been waiting on this company that sells custom batteries for mac laptops to fulfill my order - they finally shipped it today just two days shy of seven months. A number of times I was tempted to cancel my order because they just don't keep you in the loop. I waited for two months before they announced via twitter that they were shifting productions back to the US because their Chinese manufacturers were selling them short. Probably another two months waiting for that process to complete, promising to ship by the middle, then end, of August, mid-September, end thereof, … waited through October, thinking it shouldn't take so long with an early order number. I actually started getting replies a few days ago (having emailed them a fifth time), then found out their bloody order system didn't record my credit card details correctly.
