Holding off until the release

Recommended Posts

I see. Nothing on platforms or progress, I assume?

Ok, one more thing. What is the general (and/or your personal) reception of whatever's been revealed so far? No details please, simply choose one of the following that best describes your opinion:

5. Positive, good, great, etc.
4. Semi-positive.
3. Neutral, mixed bag, ok, etc.
2. Semi-negative.
1. Negative, bad, horrible, etc.

PC, XBox One, PS4

General reception (from the people who saw it) seems like a solid 5
Reaction videos from Quakecon show people who have been completely blown away in awe.

Mine is a 3 - mainly because I haven't seen it for myself.

So here's the thing: if I'm 100% positive I'm getting it, how about staying in the dark until the very release?

I'm with you! I've done this before, most recently with Skyrim. I didn't know much about it before playing and I was glad to have only seen little bits of it all. I watched that one trailer and then stopped viewing details n such. I've been saying for a long time now that I dislike that game developers show way too much before release. When they revealed Half-Life 2 I stayed away from trailers and screenshots. I sometimes miss the pre-internet days (before 2000 or so for me) when I would walk into a store, see a game I didn't even have a clue was being developed, picked it up and that was a richer experience IMHO. Blade of Darkness, Arx Fatalis and Strife are a few titles that I knew 0% about before buying. I think I saw way too much of Doom 3 before it got released and the expansion I had to force myself to not view the available media. I just want to see a few Doom 4 screens and then go into stealth mode. ;)

5 for me. I felt that nearly every aspect of what was shown was handled very appropriately. I felt that same giddy thrill as I did playing new Doom games back in the day. It was more exciting then the first time I played Doom 3. I have a fee quips, but I'm giving the demo a 5 regardless, because it looks so promising.

I'll wait until I see info about modding first, no way I'll buy a Doom game with bare bones or no mod support.

I've failed to keep every single detail of what was shown a secret, unfortunately. Hard to not accidentally read a word or two in a headline! Still I don't know most things so it's ok.

But in the light of this, I have another question. I've heard that there were

Spoiler

executions

in the demo. Can anyone say whether they were in first-person or third-person?

First-person. The camera never left the players point of view during the demo.

So, I'm still doing this. In the wake of E3 I'm entering a complete media/info blackout. There are three main reasons for this: (i) avoiding knowledge of specific enemies/weapons/environments as well as other gameplay features, (ii) avoiding familiarity with the game months before the release and (iii) avoiding a potential graphical downgrade between the reveal and release. While I do know stuff from last years QC and I've seen the Cyberdemon teaser, I intend to avoid everything from the actual unveiling and onwards, until the release.

To be perfectly honest though, this shouldn't be too hard now. My excitement for DOOM4 has significantly dropped in the last couple of weeks. I have a gut feeling that this game will be precisely what I DON'T want it to be. Time will tell but as of right now my expectations are very low.

Are you just going to avoid the Doom 4 sub-forum entirely? People will be posting GIFs left and right, so it will be hard to avoid everything if you're just going to try and be careful.

Yeah, the only info I need is a release date so I won't be participating in any discussions until I play the game. Unless something seriously pisses me off. Initially I wanted to stay away from QC14 info but then Bethesda came out with this whole secret 'reveal' nonsense and I basically said "screw it".

EDIT: Besides, I'm already tired of people making all kinds of assumptions and jumping into all kinds of conclusions, especially revolving around a certain popular mod so I'll gladly leave that all behind until the game comes out and I can judge it for what it actually is.

Is this like the gaming equivalent of waiting until marriage to lose your virginity?

Or worse... going out of your way to avoid watching porn and boobie pics until that fateful day?

Well, that just takes all the fun out of it :/

Needless to say, I doubt that's even possible. Somewhere along the lines, you'll see a pic. No matter how hard you try not to... it'll happen.

So you'd never buy Doom 64?

More like the equivalent of "I don't want to know 90% of the game before I even run the installation." See this RAGE trailer. It shows off almost EVERYTHING, including the final fight and every plot point. And no, waiting doesn't take the fun away. In fact, it should add to the experience because I won't know what to expect. Versus knowing pretty much everything in advance.

I'd certainly want to know if the game is good or not when I'm spending big bucks on a brand new AAA title.

It's not like after 8 years of waiting a negative review or two will prevent me from trying it out myself day one.

I bought Doom 3 day 1.

I've been avoiding all media for everything over the past 6 months. Its been surprisingly easy. All I do is work and visit this site.

After I saw the first trailer for Prometheus, I was sold. I avoided all trailers, commercials and knowledge. Now I know nothing about Jurassic World, Star Wars and anything else for that matter.

Heck I still know nothing about Alien: Isolation other than daughter of Ripley vs 1 alien.

I'm not sure I can avoid all Doom 4 media since I'm a staple of this site.

I personally always wait until reviews and first impressions videos come out before I buy a game. Then again with the new Steam refund system it makes those fairly redundant.
