Source Port Development?

i cant login to doom3world, so i ask here.

1. how far is the source port development. iodoom, cdk, uqedoom3. some good features? can somebody do a short summary for outsiders.

2. do source ports use the free parts of the BFG source.

3. will it happend that the d3 modifications go standalone.

4. what version for linux is best.

From what I know, Doom 3 ports have made little progress. iodoom3 doesn't seem like it's been updated for months and the changelogs and documentation still sound like they just got started on it even though it's been a project for years.

As far as I know, none of the existing Doom 3 ports support the BFG Edition's asset formats yet, even despite the code now being available.

If you ask me, it seems Doom 3 editing and port work is pretty much completely dead. I've seen a dozen awesome looking projects get announced, with tons of awesome looking screenshots, and then they turn out to be complete vaporware.

The only Doom 3 mod with actual levels worth playing so far has been Hexen: EoC, which isn't even Doom-themed. And it was plagued with balance issues and beta bugs, even then.

What about Endarchy? It's quite short and not without its flaws, but...

To be fair, there have been several custom levels released which are worth playing, just browse through doom3.filefront.com. What I'm not sure about is if that site still downloads. Last time I was hitting errors and 404.

What would Doom 3 source ports be needed for?

new features, standalone versions instead of mods, linux optimisation. the same why classic doom ports were made or ioquake3.
