ZDaemon?

What exactly is ZDaemon anyway? I always hear about it.

It's a client/server port that lets you create and join multiplayer games. Like CSdoom but better.

Get Zdaemon from NightFang's web page www.truelights.com It's based on zdoom 1.22, has a launcher which can display the various servers running, and you will be able to join a game at will. The code allows very smooth movement even if your ping is pretty high, though you will notice some lag in weapons operation with high ping. You'll need doom2.wad.
