basic network

i would like to know how to set up a basic network between 2 computers and how to start a doom/quake game. how do i find the IP of the computer i wish to host the game. how can i set it up easily so i can transfer files for the games too.

You mean a LAN between two computers in your house, right? Simple; Get two network cards and a twisted TP cable, and hook it all up. Running windows, you can copy files just like you would copy around stuff on your own computer, just enter "network neighbourhood" on your desktop and find the other computer there.
The IP adress can be found using ->Start->Run->"winipcfg"

It usually is, unless you've messed around with your network setup :) Meaning that it usualy isn't in my case :)
