What keyboard layout does everyone use?

Recommended Posts

Y - Forward

H - Back

J - Right

G - Left

Mouse1 - Fire
Mouse2 - Jump
Space - Crouch (Activate for Doom)

Chainsaw / fist - 5
Pistol - 6
Shotgun / SSG - U
Chaingun - I
Rocket Launcher - K
Plasma - M
BFG - T

I tend to use the same keyboard layout for pretty much any other game. c:

I could never get over how in WASD the W doesn't directly line up above the S, so I use the Arrow Keys for movement. Just slide the keyboard a few inches to the left and it feels perfectly natural.

Mouse Left is Fire, Mouse Right is Use. Since I play using Zandro I can get away with using the scrollwheel alone for cycling through the weapons. It scrolls super fast compared to the other engines I've played with.

If I'm playing something where I have to jump or duck (ugh)I've got Ctrl and Shift for those.

WASD for movement
Mouse1 to fire
Number keys for weapons
Spacebar to use
Q to jump

For testing:
Z to noclip (also helpful for when maps aren't coop-friendly)
G for god mode
K to kill monsters

Basically this except I use e/middle mouse click to jump when playing something that involves it, like Square.

Also, I have strafe on bound to right mouse, and turn left and right bound to C and ALT. For the SR50 purposes, heh.

Turn Left is W

I had to give that control scheme a go, HOW DO YOU DO IT!?!?? xD

I use an old-fashioned keyboard + mouse FPS setup, based on a general format very common years ago--and popularized by id Software games, to whit--before the rise (or is it re-rise?) of WASD formats.

Up arrow: forward
Down arrow: backward
Left arrow: turn left
Right arrow: turn right
< : Sidestep left
> : Sidestep right
(R)Shift: run modifier
Spacebar: use/open
Number keys: weapon select (traditional/default bindings)

Left mouse/mouse 1: fire
Right mouse/mouse 2: strafe modifier

Most of my turning/aiming is actually done via mouse tracking, of course, but I'm sure you see what I mean. Additional keys are used in game formats that have additional functions, ala jump/crouch in ZDoom WADs, inventory item management in Hexen/Heretic WADs, an altfire button on mouse 3 in Build engine games and so forth, but the above is a pretty universal backbone setup in all of my FPS gaming.

All a question of what kind of scheme you're brought up on, I'm sure.

Really not index finger?
How does your keyboard look like? Mine has Ctrl on the left from Alt, and Tab high up on the left from both. Going by your description, my hand ended up in an awkward position with thumb bent under palm. Is this how you play, really?

I play with my thumbs bent under my hands.
