Doom 2's release date

Recommended Posts

We're close to the 21st anniversary of Doom 2, and I decided to take a quick look at some of the articles about the game just to verify if release date(s) (September 30 for US, October 10 for EU) were correctly tagged...

Doomwiki
http://doomwiki.org/wiki/Doom_II
http://doomwiki.org/wiki/Timeline#1994

"...Doom II: Hell on Earth is the first sequel to Doom, released by id Software on September 30, 1994..."
"September 30 - Doom II is released."

Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doom_II:_Hell_on_Earth

The english article points out both release dates correctly. However, the spanish version takes the european date as the american one (?!), and there's not a single mention of two release dates. Those articles from european countries naturally take Oct. 10 as the release date, and a couple of articles make note of the american release.

Mobygames
http://www.mobygames.com/game/doom-ii_/release-info

Country: United States
Release Date: Oct 10, 1994

Rest of the EU
Release Date: 1994 (no specific date)

Gamefaqs
http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/197142-doom-ii/data

Both release dates are correct

Giantbomb
http://www.giantbomb.com/doom-ii-hell-on-earth/3030-621/

"...Doom II: Hell on Earth is a first-person shooter developed by id and published by GT for the PC on September 30, 1994." However, the "Game Details" section to the far right points the european date as the "First release date". Lovely.

What's up with that? Masters of Doom also mentions the party they organized for Doom 2 that took place in (oh dear) October 10, but doesn't mention anything happening in September.

I think September 10 was when the pre-orders for Doom II were finally getting shipped, but not like what happened with 3DR and DN3D (They had to package it themselves, and with Max Payne. See those pictures), and October 10 was when it was in stores, without pre-order or mail-order.

Well worth it for that Max Payne mousepad! I used that for a decade.
