Gaming History : Doom – “More than just The FPS”

Doom was what you could call The First Person Shooter. Not A First Person Shooter, but The First Person Shooter. And yet, many of its peers in later years have missed out on a core element that made Doom shine back then and still does now.

I'd say this article is relevant here, even though it's more about how the combat mechanics of Doom are different than that of standard FPS games:

However, you have to realize that most of us on this website are quite aware of these types of design oddities in classic Doom (and of course very fond of them, which is why we spend our time playing this game and not Battlefield).
