tom19.wad - 19 maps + demos (-complevel 9)

wads&mods thread: http://www.doomworld.com/vb/wads-mods/45881-tom-18-maps-part-1-done-part-2-started/

Intended to be played with these options, if you want:

CATEGORY 1 (INTENDED)
- prboom-plus 2.5.0.1+
- kills/items/secrets/timer HUD (with "smart totals" turned off)
- any resolution + uncapped fps
- custom key config for weapons
- -longtics
- no TAS features (unless you specify your demo is TAS)
- turn180 if you use keyboard only

CATEGORY 2
- zdoom
- freelook + jumping turned on
- infinitely tall actors turned off
- no bfg aiming
- custom key config for weapons
- no crouch

tom is a work-in-progress boom compatible wad that uses only doom2 format line actions (except boom light transfers) and sector effects. All maps are safe to record on and won't be changed in the future (so demos won't desync). New maps will be added when they're done. Any and all demos will be added to the zip file, so a big thanks to any recorders!

This megawad rules for speedrunning.

16:16 on 16 (that's a lot of 16's); not as fast as your 14:50. I put a txt/zip with it since forum attachments usually have those.

I wonder if turn180 (flip 180 degrees key) could be useful to mousers (they tend to turn fast enough anyway I guess). Not sure what longtics is.

Cool, I like how you cut through the pain elemental horde like butter and how you kill the pillar cybers. Getting stuck in the archvile slime puddle at the end was funny. I tried with a bit different route and got 11:54 - tom16-1154-max-tod.zip.

I dunno what longtics is exactly, but from what I understand it's just like playing normally without recording. I guess all the player movement data or something doesn't get recorded in the demo file when you record (you can notice if you use a mouse, moving it slowly - it's not smooth, it's choppy when recording). Some of my demos were with -longtics.

Personally, I think turn180 is lame for mousers, since they can turn fast anyway. For the shooting switches part in map15, sometimes it gets tough to keep your aim straight when you're shooting and quickly doing 180's with the mouse, but maybe pressing a key to turn180 would be a bit slower, I dunno. I like it for keyboarders, though. Also, I don't like turn180 for rocket jumping. For jumps where you jump backwards, a big part of the jump is lining yourself up blindly. With turn180, you could face the destination and line up the jump, then press turn180 to face backwards, then rocket jump. BOO

That's really fast. I got 13:30 on 16 just now... but with lots of deaths and saves. Is this one of the maps that has an intended alternate zdoom/rocket jump route too?

Yeah, you got the idea. Here is a page with technical info.

ggg - none of these maps had alternate rjump/zdoom routes in mind when I made them, but there should be a few places where you could save time in zdoom with rjumps/jumps/enemy surfing/freelook.

Just for fun, below are a bunch of screenshots of the levels that are remakes of levels from other games. Each pic has a screenshot from the original level and the doom remake, side-by-side. All of the remakes were built by looking around in-game in the original level, counting floor/wall tiles for heights/lengths, standing in corners and seeing where other corners line up, using a ruler and the in-game map to figure out general room sizes, etc. The Quake remakes were also built that way (I didn't look in a Quake editor). Though, there are still differences in appearance between the originals and remakes.

Beat my previous 16 run at least but still a disappointing time (I just kept going the back way instead of reversing).

Its probably among my top 3 or so megawads I've ever played (half megawad/whatever). Favorite maps being 2,4,6,13,16 (though I still havn't thoroughly played 8/9/10 or 15 and a couple others yet). I'll probably attempt those eventually but might need to change my keyboard setup to have separate strafing keys and stuff before I can play any better.

Maybe you should go back to using zdoom/rocket jump formats if you plan to make more maps after this since that's what you seem to prefer.

Thanks. :)
I think 8 and 9 would play better in zdoom with jumping, since it's annoying waiting for the archviles to throw you onto the platforms. Though, since lost souls are counted towards kill% in zdoom, there will be some unkillable monsters.

I haven't planned any new maps yet, and I'm not sure if they'll be for prboom-plus or zdoom, but I'll definitely make more zdoom rocket jumping slaughter maps in the future. I never made classic-style maps before, so it was fun trying to do stuff in doom2 format. While I do like jumping/rocket jumping/freelook, I also like no freelook with autoaim, gliding on things (can't in zdoom?), and bumping items (can't in zdoom?).

btw, here's a direct link to map30 demo - 50:09 (I'm not Ruba, I swear)

There was a similar level in 1337.wad where you also went down some extremely long and apparently endless passage, if I'm not mistaken.

Weird, I've seen that wad a few times on /idgames recent votes, but apparently I've never played it (I didn't recognize any of the maps and it's not on either of my computers). I'm guessing the map is 21? heh, it's even got the glowing sector effect too. Map11 in that wad is also, I'm assuming, a 2-bfg-shot cyber killing map. I really like some of those maps, thanks.

Cool j4, I'll watch when I get home. Yeah, I forgot how old this wad is. But you're only "starting" to like my maps? ;)

Yeah, map30 is kinda lolsy.

Cool, yeah I don't know what the mods want to do about that.
Not sure if a mod wants to merge old demos from the wad list into here, but I can compile a list of old demo posts if they want to.

Let me tell you something, dew just gets giddy when you hand him a hot stack of posts to merge.

If I merge the old threads, they'll be placed before the current OP and you'll have to edit them around. Still want me to do it?
