Just to clarify, the images sent back so far are from the "Hazard Cams" on the front and back of the rover that image the ground to check for any obstacles and such during navigation. Needless to say, these don't need to be hugely hi-res or in color to work properly. I think we will be seeing some much more spectacular shots in the coming months. EDIT: As an aside, I am curious as to the actual composition of the landing site. From the images, it looks almost rock-solid, like dusty concrete. For some reason, I was expecting it to look a little more loose, like sand or gravel. 0 Share this post Link to post

Well the bottom of the crater itself would be solid, but maybe the dust storms aren't too frequent in that region? 0 Share this post Link to post

Hellbent Posted August 7, 2012 does it have an onboard 'lab' where it can take rock samples and give back meaningful data on the contents of the samples? Surely it's not just going to take pretty pictures? @sodaholic: yes, get to it. 0 Share this post Link to post

Tristan Posted August 8, 2012 http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/msl/multimedia/pia16013.html This a new, full-resolution, yet still B/W image taken a couple of hours ago by Curiosity's navigation cameras. This is why I love space stuff :) 0 Share this post Link to post
