E3 2013 Presentation: Microsoft and Sony

Technically, it's true. If the architecture changes enough, supporting the older software becomes complicated; since you end up needing either to emulate the old hardware (and for the immediately previous generation, you aren't going to get good emulation performances) or to include the old hardware alongside the new (and that makes the device all the more expensive).

Most definitely not. They'll lose maybe 1% of their fanbase, at most. Meanwhile, the gaming market keeps expanding, meaning that all the new people for whom the XBO will be the first console will more than compensate for the few grumpy members of the vocal minority who did buy the Xbox and Xbox 360 but actually, really won't buy the Xbox One.

Several retailers have reported the Xbox One got record-breaking number of preorders. It will be a massive commercial success for Microsoft, and it will comfort them to go even further in this direction.

The biggest problem is the ignorant comsumer.

It really blows my mind how many people just don't give a fuck about what they are buying as long as it is a part of some brand.

Backwards compatibility is not a deal breaker for me. I remember back when it was uncommon for consoles to have that feature, and it was only possible because it had some of the same hardware inside it (Genesis, PS2, GBA, DS) . The Atari 7800 ran off the same chip, as did the GameBoy Color. The PS3's software emulation is actually a new development, and only made possible by the HUGE jump in horsepower.

MAYBE backwards compatibility will make a comeback in the generation after next, if they decide to stick with x86 architecture.

That may be, but you can be sure that many of the potential buyers are completely clueless and in for a nasty surprise once they find out how restrictive the system is - and that's when the true problems will start for Microsoft.

And blocking resales is not magically pumping more money into the market. The ones who would resell to finance their new games just had to buy less due to lack of money.

Let's see how this pans out. I still see a large percentage of gaming migrate to mobile platforms (i.e. away from Microsoft.)

I haven't looked at any statistics, but from my own observations in my microcosm, I know 4 other Xbox owners that are planning to make the conversion. (granted, I know that isn't sufficient data to make a clear conclusion.)

But also consider, before Xbox, a lot of people had owned the original Playstation. therefore, making the transition from Microsoft to Sony will not be that awkward for a large amount of gamers. Perhaps it will evoke a sense of nostalgia to see that playstation logo again.

I remember when I made the switch from sony to microsoft after two PS2 crapped out on me. the last one I had stopped reading discs, so I proceeded to rip out the disc tray in a blind rage. then after i collected myself, I walked down the the store I bought it from and threw eggs at the window, and calmly walked away.

The store wasn't responsible for the shoddy quality of the console. It's not like they could have stocked PS2s built by a different manufacturer than Sony.

What they could have done is not stock the console at all, but customers would have complained about that a lot.

Actually, it sort of was. I remember asking the store manager if the PS2 I bought was one that was part of the first batch that was plagued with hardware issues. He had swore that it was part of the newer models that had addressed those issues; turns out it wasn't. Before I had became frustrated, and destroyed it, I had tried to get my money back, or exchange it for another one, which i could not.

Back then, hundreds of bucks were hard to come by, because I was a lot younger, and didn't make as much as I do now. They're lucky I didn't throw the PS2 through their window, instead of eggs.

In retrospect, it wasn't a good idea, because the scumbag manager probably just got some poor cashier to clean it up. At least that place went out of business.

It appears Microsoft used high end PCs with Titan video cards to show off their new games meant to be on their console at E3. The thing is that the Nvidia Titan is at least 2.5x to 3x faster than the XBone's GPU, which seems to be a modified ATI Radeon HD 7770 from what I've heard.

Mr. Chris, if that really is true... Oh man, what a scheme. "Here's how good the game could look, if you had hardware better than that of the ex bone!"

In truth I'm wondering when the "gaming console" thing will end as a whole. I'm sure not for a long time, but in spirit, it has already died. Perhaps I only think this because I've had a decent computer for quite a few years now. One thing is certain, the rivalry is nowhere near as cool as the SEGA vs. Nintendo shit of the olden days. Now it's all just dudes in suits talking about arbitrary crap, could literally be condensed to 20 seconds by just saying the fucking specs.

It honestly feels like Microsoft is TRYING to fuck everything up.

Yeah, I've yet to see a legit reason to not just upgrade/build a new PC rather than spend half a fortune on one of the next gen consoles. I suspect I'll be more interested in Sony's exclusives down the line, but being that both machines are x86 based there's little reason they can't release PC versions (but, of course, "can't" and "won't" aren't the same). I do find it pretty funny that out of all of the "xbox" exclusives only Halo and Quantum Break were the only ones that aren't also announced for PC, and seriously who give a shit about halo anymore.

It honestly feels like ebay is TRYING to fuck everything up too. Lots of major components of civilization seem this way.. almost like there is a covert war being waged to intentionally implode everything.. And, since you can't sell used games for this, that's yet another trimmed off branch of potential sales to make income on ebay, even though they now direct 99% of search visibility to china/cronies/anyone without empathy/criminals/etc exclusively.

They're experts at propaganda, so this could be a lie to start a bandwagon effect. If you merely say it has record breaking preorders to a bunch of sheep, you have yourself a self fulfilling prophecy.
But it probably is the truth because most of the public are fat, docile little aphids being milked by merciless ants:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43id_NRajDo
The public is completely victimized, made impotent and unable to cope with the sophistication of their mesmerizing propaganda. They'll pay to have this thing surveil them and feed them propaganda (I just watched "dark knight rising" until it was too shit to watch which was soon, and it immediately started with prisoners with black bags on their heads. Yeah, nice batman movie, or guantanamo-man I guess it might be called now) and this will make them even weaker and an even easier target for the next corporation to continue the downward spiral. They're consumers and being fed shit in exchange for their actual energy measured in dollars. Skeksis have drank their essence and turned them into shriveled podlings, made blind to the superior quality videogames, and everything else, could be, and herded to excrete more honeydew.
And the inertia of the whole system probably can't be changed. If you push the system from some edge, someone on the opposite edge will push back, and both pushes are insignificant relative to the whole mass in the middle anyway.

Durr, keep in mind that there's absolutely no way that they could effectively demonstrate the games on the consoles themselves: The consoles aren't still complete and neither are the games, which means that they're far from being as optimized as they will be at launch. Yet, MS obviously wants to make as good an impression as possible, which means that they'll have to run the games on as good hardware as possible. If they did use the consoles they'd probably be much worse performance shown than what the final product will have.

I'd be surprised if Sony didn't use any PCs either.

I think it says more about shilling preorders and their perceived value than anything else. The PS2 is the best-selling console of all time; I wouldn't be surprised if the XBone has already surpassed it in preorders.

I still remember the time my ex-girlfriend preodered something for me for Christmas - and it was a collector's edition, so double fail. Things went downhill after that.

Amazon pre-orders of PS4 vs XBox One: 18:1.

Is that a wisp of in intelligence from the gaming community?

I firmly believe that over the next two decades, we'll see an end to consoles. We used to have separate devices for making phone calls, watching videos, listening to music, playing games, using software, etc., and now there are multiple devices that do all of that and more. I suspect it won't be long before there are only a few devices that do it all, and ultimately, just one. For awhile each major corporation will have their all-in-one device, but at some point homogeny will win. I suppose this implies a merging of all the major corporations.

The comments from the supposed MS employee in the first link bother the fuck out of me. Why do people developing new hardware have such a fucking hard-on for Minority Report? Do they really think waving your hands around like an idiot is the future of computing? We already have the most productive work environment humanity will ever need: a desk. You try pointing at things on a wall for 8 hours and let me know how productive you're being after your biceps have turned to quivering jelly.

I think the share button is pretty stupid; I'd probably never press it, unless by accident. Perhaps it should have been something that you can utilize in the system's interface, instead of giving it a button all it's own. None of my friends give a fuck about the video games I play, and vice versa. It's almost as dumb as the share buttons on porn sites.

MS just pulled a 180.

Nice to see common sense prevailing. Now all they need to do is ditch the mandatory camera.

Since the Kinect takes the input needed for voice commands, and is a mandatory addition for Xbox One, i doubt that will change.
