Do you absolutely need the portability? Because you can get a Doom-crushing desktop for less than half of that

Of those two? For Doom? The Lenovo; no contest. The HP website says that model has an Intel GPU. What good's that for gaming? The thing that sucks about the Lenovo is the lack of an SSD. You could swap it for much less than the discount, though.

Mr Freeze has a good point about portability. Those laptops are extremely expensive and laptops as a rule are harder to maintain and more expensive per whatever unit of performance you choose to measure.

'Gaming' laptops by definition are a waste of money, but if you must have one the Lenovo is a good choice, and are quite durable. However it would be a miracle if you went near 35 FPS in the new Doom on that thing...just seems really shortsighted.

My alternative? A desktop..seriously. A coworker was dead-set on some high-end ASUS laptop for gaming, spent just about that same amount of money. The same year, I built my desktop for just over half what he paid, and it ran circles around his laptop. Three years later, he mostly games on a ps4 just to keep up and my system still blazes through anything I throw at it.

You'd be far better off getting a desktop for Doom 2016. Neither of those laptops would be able to handle the game.

The Lenovo has a 940M, which is far below Doom's minimum GPU requirement. That laptop will struggle even on low settings.

The HP 840 G3, however, doesn't seem to have a dedicated GPU at all.

Neither of those will be particularly good for Doom. I strongly suggest you buy a desktop PC with a good graphics card.

If you ABSOLUTELY need a laptop, I suggest this:

https://yepo.com.au/asus-gl502vt-i7-6700hq-15-6-fhd-256gb-ssd-8gb-gtx970m-3gb-w10h-64bit-1yr-gl502vt-fw055t.htm

GTX 970M is a respectable, gaming-capable graphics card.

That ^^^^^^^^

The first two ones are not cut for Doom,
Lenovo builds laptops like tanks but with the 940M you will struggle like hell.
The Hp comes with either a 4400hd or Amd 8750m. I have the same AMD on my laptop, Doom runs but is not playable. Plus HP Laptops are the Master Race when it comes to Overheats.
You can´t go wrong with Asus nor with the 970M

Omg, fortunatelly these prices are in Australian dollars :).
If you want to stick with a laptop try one with 960M or better graphics card, 940M or on board intel won't make you huppy.

yep, it'll be unplayable on the Intel integrated, horrible on 940M. 960M is minimum on mobile, 970M is good, and 980M is excellent.

I doubt the Intel would run at all unless it's a very recent DX11/DX12 chip because I have an aged DX11 AMD Card that just straight up crashes when it tries to run DOOM in any fashion.

Yeah, I can actually test it on my laptop...I have a Core i5-6200U, bet you it won't run.

BTW, were you ever able to get your system upgraded for Doom?

Where i work i have assigned a machine with an Intel HD4300, Intel I5-4590 and 16 gb ram.
It can run Fallout 4 at 1280x720 everything low you can get 30 fps more or less barely playable.
It does run Doom at 1280x720 scaled Down to 50% with everything in low or off, you get about 25 fps in Single Player (45 fps Classic Maps), 30 fps Multiplayer and in SnapMap it depends on the map can go from 45 fps to 2.
While the game you can play the game, even beat it (I did it, i was to bored and said why not lol). You are going to be missing a lot of the experience that Doom is.

The best gaming laptops, as for me, it is the MSI. I have a MSI GS60. All games are "just fly". To play in the DOOM you can purchase the MSI GE72.
Here, read the description: https://yepo.com.au/ge72-6qd-680au-msi-ge72-17-3-fhd.htm.

If you really want a gaming laptop, wait until the new models sporting Pascal GPUs are out. A notebook with a GTX 1070 will cost you only a few hundred quid more than a desktop PC of the same class.
