Best WADs to have never won a Cacoward

Recommended Posts

Just a few:

SapidusB | Anguilla | 1994 | Doom | Vanilla
Full On | Tim Ackroyd | 1994 | Doom | Vanilla
Debut | BCKSIDE180 | 1996 | Doom | Vanilla
The Mars Plague | James Stewart & Ryan Weiss | 2000 | Doom | Vanilla
Mock 2 - The Speed of Stupid | Various | 2003 | Doom II | ZDoom
Garrulismo | Eye del Cul | 2004 | Doom II | Vanilla
New World | Daniel | 2004 | Doom II | Limit-Removing
New World II | Daniel | 2004 | Doom II | Limit-Removing
ZPack - Random Maps for ZDoom | Various | 2008 | Doom II | ZDoom
The History of Fruit | TheCupboard & Worst-vd-plas | 2008 | Heretic | ZDaemon
Dawn of Reality | Reinchard | 2010 | Doom II | GZDoom
The Phobos Directive | The Persecution Complex | 2011 | Doom | GZDoom

Could probably stick all of Michael Krause's maps down as well, but I cba to list them :P

Fragport | Stephen "The Ultimate DooMer" Clark | 2011

It's actually from 2001, but when I updated it in 2011 (for co-op fixes) I got it moved from the ports folder into the vanilla folder, after removing some optional port-specific stuff from the zip (same with Op-lite2 from 2000)...but a new ID was created instead of keeping the old one, hence why the timestamp is newer.

A few off the bat, probably other people have said these
* Vile Flesh - This is a travesty in my opinion.
* Real World and Real World 2 - Two solid mapsets by the same author, well I enjoy them. Rather inspired by the origional doom/doom2 maps in parts.
* Needs more detail - Another solid wad which hasn't been given enough love
* Doom 2 Reloaded
* Rebirth
*Death Tormention (any of them really) - They are all good E4 replacements.
* Maybe twilight zone 2, I think the new sounds and monsters put people off, but it showed some good signs about a mapper who would in a couple of years bring out 2002 A doom odyssey, one of my favourite wads of all time.

The original is much older - 1996, at least. The version on /idgames is just a repackage, the content is the same.

Possibly id 6714, it is probably one of the most overlooked megawads that is actually decent, possibly because somehow it didn't go into the megawads folder. Couple.recent comments have reminded me of it.

Thanks for the corrections vdgg and also The Ultimate DooMer. I've added more suggestions from d@ngib5on, fullmetalvaran33, vdgg, T-Rex, Memfis, j4rio, Processingcontrol and The Ultimate DooMer. The recommendations list has now been moved to the first post of the thread and some statistics have been provided for all WADs from the two lists.

Endgame.wad but that was released before the first Cacowards in 2004. One of the best and most underrated wads of all time.

Interesting. The other posts here seem to imply that their suggested wads are good but not great. How would you rate Endgame.wad overall? 20th best wad of all time?

I just played a couple more wads which are deserving of a Cacoward.

Dark Castle | Virgil the Doom Poet | 2000 | Doom II | Boom
Ash to Ash | Virgil the Doom Poet | 2001 | Doom II | Boom
Nexus | Brad "Vorpal" Spencer | 2001 | Doom II | Vanilla

If Heretic wads count, here's a couple of wads I found nice and worthy to be recognised as classics.

Recant by John "Dr. Sleep" Anderson.

Smudge by Chris Klie.

D1 = Ultimate Doom
D2 = Doom II
DE = Doom II Deathmatch
FD = Final Doom
HR = Heretic
HE = Hexen

BO = Boom-compatible port
SV = Client/server port
CU = Custom port (included)
GC = Doom Legacy
NT = Eternity Engine
GZ = GZDoom
LM = Limit-removing port
ST = Skulltag
VA = Vanilla
ZD = ZDoom
ZG = ZDoomGL

I reckon it looks a lot cleaner and easier to read. :)

A bit arbitrary though. There are other client-server ports than Ozdaemexum.

Why E for multiplayer? What do you do if a VAvoom mod is recommended? Wouldn't Heretic deathmatch/CTF/etc. maps be HE by the same convention? Am I the only one who abbreviates 'Exen to XN? What do you do for mods that want TNT or Plutonia? And for standalones (e.g., Harmony)? So many questions...

I'd suggest ** for vanilla, ++ for limit-removing. That way, it looks less like a proper name (it's not, there's no port called Limit Removing or Vanilla) and more like a broad generic filter.

I'd also suggest EE for Eternity Engine since it's the abbreviation pretty much all EE users are already familiar with. (Very few people should understand "Everything Else" forum in that context.)

DL, LE or LG for Doom Legacy would be easier to understand than GC. Garbage Collector?

The DE is short for deathmatch. No WADs that require Vavoom have won a Cacoward or been recommended yet but an abbreviation can be made when/if that happens. TNT and Plutonia WADs are grouped as FD. There are so few Final Doom WADs in the lists that it's no issue to just read the .txt files to find out which IWAD they are for. EE would have been used for the Eternity Engine but I was forced to choose abbreviations based on character widths so that the columns would line up properly.

you have a point in everything else you mentioned, but this sounds waaaay too french. :P

Oh, I see someone has already recommended the Operation: Biowar wad. My mistake. Sorry, guys. :P Well, at least I recommended two Heretic wads after that.

DM = deathmatch (there's precedent for this)
CS = client/server (also very commonly used abbreviation)
HX = Hexen (more logical, follows pattern of HR = Heretic)

And a small nitpick: Classic Episode 2 is really just limit-removing, with some optional enhancements for ZDoom.

To a lot of Doomers, HR means only one thing, and it sure as hell ain't Heretic.

Hell Revealed is a PWAD, not an IWAD or executable.

They were actually the abbreviations that I had chosen hex11 but I had to change them when the columns didn't line up due to the differing character widths. So the choice is to either have all the abbreviations being very obvious and the list look like a dog's breakfast, or to have a few less obvious ones and have a neat-looking list. lol

I think you can use "code" tag to make all characters have the same width:

DM
DE
EE
NT
CS
HX
HE
