Blastfrog Posted October 21, 2012 The FOV in Doom 3 BFG is NOT 60, it is 80. Furthermore, since BFG was designed with widescreen in mind, the actual FOV is more like 107. Also, the world textures are NOT reduced in resolution, they are the same as they've always been. 0 Share this post Link to post

I really wish anybody who claims the textures look worse would cease playing games entirely. If by 'worse' you mean 'has more crispness and detail', than yeah, they look worse all right. 0 Share this post Link to post
Harmata Posted October 21, 2012 I think that one of the reasons why some people think that textures got worse is the new lighting EVERYWHERE. They did a very lousy job by simply making almost every scene brighter, and now those textures that were previously hidden in darkness are more noticeable. 0 Share this post Link to post
Revenant100 Posted October 21, 2012 Sodaholic said:Stop spreading falsehoodsI'd say this is a bit of an ironic sentiment since what you're saying isn't exactly correct either. Unfortunately, it's not so easy to compare the FOV between games simply by the value of "g_fov" since the BFG Edition measures FOV differently than the original CD release. I think the best way to clear up the FOV confusion is simply to compare actual images from each game. To begin, the original CD release of Doom 3 can automatically adjust the FOV so you never have to modify the default g_fov of 90 between different aspect ratios: http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/8788/d3origfov.jpg Now the BFG Edition, which is supposed to natively support widescreen, defaults g_fov to 80: http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/4157/d3bfgfov80.jpg That looks pretty looks pretty small, so why not set g_fov in the BFG Edition to 90 as you suggest?: http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/1630/d3bfgfov90.jpg That's still not correct. However, if we calculate the proper FOV, let's set the BFG Edition's g_fov to 106: http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/8238/d3bfgfov106.jpg No we've finally matched the original game's FOV. But what does this mean for the popular rumor that the BFG Edition's FOV is 60? Just for fun, let's set g_fov in the original version of Doom 3 to 65 and compare it to the BFG Edition's default g_fov of 80: http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/8466/d3origfov65.jpg And that looks pretty identical to me. So you're correct, the BFG Edition doesn't use a fixed fov of 60. It's actually about 65. The original CD release of Doom 3 has an Ultra Quality setting which uses uncompressed textures while the BFG Edition is locked with compressed textures equivalent to the original's High Quality. Here's a comparison: Doom 3 original CD release on Ultra Quality (uncompressed textures): http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/5576/80479517.jpg BFG Edition (compressed textures): http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/2600/bfgg.jpg 0 Share this post Link to post

Here's a comparison: Not trying to insinuate anything, but are you sure your graphics card is loading all the textures correctly? I ask because I can detect virtually no difference at all in most of the world textures from the BFG to the Vanilla versions. Though with the different lighting, it's sometimes hard to tell. But, I mean you really gotta run around in the game zooming in and make it a point to notice these things. Texture analness is such a PC gamer thing lol. I have the original Doom 3 on PC and the BFG version on PS3, the old version on PC does look better (and proper FOV!), but we're taking about two different shades of shit at this stage in the games age behehe. I think the BFG version is just to celebrate Doom, and give an excuse to play through them all over again, now on my PS3 :) 0 Share this post Link to post
