I've found "Nightmare" difficulty nothing more than frustrating. I lose the plot if monsters just respawn in a few seconds. 100% kills used to mean something. If I had to make a new difficulty for Doom:

- Fast monsters
- Predicting projectiles
- Hitscan enemies are 99% accurate
- Double damage from hurt floors & crushers
- Double damage from melee attacks
- Enemies gain 1HP for every second they're awake
- Health & armor bleeds out above 100%

1. No stress.
2. You probably meant to pick the above difficulty
3. Come on, what are the chances the map author actually implemented difficulty levels well?
4. Default
5. Respawning monsters? Who the hell thought that was a good idea?

It's an awesome idea, which creates suspense and keeps you on edge even in familiar levels, it's just that combined with fast and instantly-reacting monsters it gets quite harsh. On skills 1-4 most players should be able to enjoy it.

"Vegetable Bird"

Is that like a cross-breed between a parrot and a cucumber, or the like?

It's fun coming up with themes for these for every mod I make. For example, wwhc-diaz and ww-terror's all come from action films, ww-style's are NES games (from Kirby to Bayou Billy), and one character class in the (stalled) Hernandez mod has them all named for classic rock songs, with the hardest being "Sympathy for the Devil."

In someof my ZDoom mods I opt for "Easy", "Tough" and "Slaughter!" I tend to only use two of them at a time though, so you have a rough idea how hard the maps will be by what option isn't there.

Nope, not this. Although "Vegetable-Bird" is a slang in Chinese which means "Noob", however the reason why this name is used have several explanations.

Most people think this word is actually Hokkien, it's first used in Taiwanese Military.

lol. Except I play nightnare semi-regularly, so I would replace the last wut with, ummm, yeah, actually let's just leave it at 'wut' on second thoughts. Seeing as I am not sure why I even do that to myself.

Ok Seeing as everything for me is relative to ultra violence, then:

1) No Violence
2) Slight Violence
3) Moderate Violence
4) Ultra Violence
5) Ludicrous Violence

Bingo! Although, I was actually thinking of the dragons from the 1981 edition of Basic D&D, and in that one the White and Blue dragons are neutral rather than evil. There's also the good-aligned Gold dragon, who can breathe either fire or chlorine gas (but still only gets to use it 3x/day).

You might be familiar with that edition, since it was the first one officially translated into french. There was also an ealier "pirate" translation of Eric Holmes' 1977 edition, but it probably didn't get distributed very much.

I suspect that Raffles the Gentleman Thug may be able to provide some ideas along these lines too.

How about lines from the famous Minnesota arrest soundclip?

The retrophile in me is most pleased. Don't most folk think the original Ghosts 'n' Goblins is tougher? (not I, since I know that game insanely well)

Some ideas based on Doom song titles:

1. Adrian's asleep / Running from evil
2. Waiting for Romero to play / I sawed the demons
3. Shawn's got the shotgun / Waltz of the demons
4. They're going to get you / On the hunt /Suspense
5. Getting too tense / Countdown to death / The ultimate challenge

(Based on the songs themselves, it'd be arranged differently.)
