Tom Clancy dead at 66.

Recommended Posts

As I was the one who passed along the news to you all when Michael Crichton died a few years back, I will take it upon myself to pass the info along of another dead author.

Tom Clancy dead at 66.

I never got a chance to read anything by Tom Clancy but I have enjoyed pretty much all the films I've seen based on his works: Hunt for Red October, Clear and Present Danger, Patriot Games, and The Sum of All Fears. If any of you have read his books, any recommendations?

RIP Tom.

RIP Tom Clancy.

One of the first Commodore 64 games I played was Red Storm Rising. Have never read any of Tom Clancy's novels. I tend not to read much outside of fantasy and sci-fi.

I've read pretty much all of his books and a few of the ones he's credited for or "co-author" of. Personally the John Clark stories (Rainbow Six and Without Remorse) are probably more interesting than his Jack Ryan ones, but they all form a good narrative and he does tend to include plenty of jargon and technical specifications to at least give the impression that he knows what he's talking about.

All told, I like his works, but he's not one of my favourite authors. The books tend to go on a bit too long and drag a bit in places, even when the story and characters are really engaging.

God damn, this just sucks.

I love Clancy's work, and I actually got into his books through a copy of Clear and Present Danger that I had received from my late grandfather. Through it, I dived into what I consider one of my favorite authors, superseded only by the likes of Stephen King and Peter Straub.

R.I.P., you magnificent bastard.

Although I didn't know Tom Clancy too much, I do remember hearing about his name. I also heard of The Hunt For Red October, and I should watch the movie because I heard it's good. I might also read the book as well. My condolences go to Tom Clancy's friends and family.

I'm surprised you haven't seen it. Not only is it good, but it comes on TV all the time. My mom complains loudly if she sees it on now.

he'd been using a ghost writer for years to churn out sub-standard mary-sue warporn. not that I'm against sub-standard mary-sue warporn, but I am against people claiming authorship when they haven't so much as put pen to paper.

RIP those good Tom Clancy tactical shooters from back when games like Rainbow Six were ruling realistic shooters. Sadly murdered horribly by terrible games like Call of Duty who abused the word realistic too far. May his soul live on in Takedown Red Sabre. (When they fix it)

Beautiful words from a beautiful dickhead like me.

Shame. I think I've read most of his stuff, even The Bear & The Dragon, which was over a thousand pages. I skipped most of his newer work, since it tended to be co-authoring gigs with writers who were a bit more lightweight than him in the political/tech/military intrigue department. Sucks that the games he was involved in have been unceremoniously killed off by Ubisoft, but not before perverting them from the 'thinking man's shooter' philosophy behind them in the first place. Welp, that's what the big publishers want to make, and so they rig focus groups to prove themselves right, and prove to mainstream shooty genre followers that this is what they should want if they're really cool and don't want to be made fun of in PE class, so that's what they want. And so they end up with modern-mil snorefests that are a stagnation in mechanics and narrative, and have a story that reads like a Tom Clancy novel... as written by a fourteen-year-old that thinks WE GOT FUKKEN STEALTH HELICOPTERS WOOOO and doesn't get far beyond that.
