How good of a doom player do you consider yourself?

Recommended Posts

Do you think you're a good Doom player?

Can you run through a slaughter map on Nightmare with your fist?
Or do you prefer to sort out your problems with the demons peacefully?

I don't know how to make polls, so have this instead.

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the best, how good do you think you are?

1. I don't remember how to shoot.

2. I can finish E1M1 on I'm too young to die. Maybe.

3. I've never played higher than "Hey, not too rough."

4. Pinkies still scare me on occasion.

5. I can finish Ultimate Doom on "Hurt me Plenty"

6. Ultra Violence still gives me a challenge.

7. Who needs the BFG?

8. I have played Doom enough to know every enemy location.

9. I have successfully completed Doom on Nightmare

10. Who needs guns when I have my fist!?

999. My doom ability is on another plane of existence.

A : in source ports not changing doom its behaviour :
-> 7. Who needs the BFG?

B : in source ports that mess around with everything
-> 6. Ultra Violence still gives me a challenge.

C : in the future based on my ever deteriorating gaming skills
-> 1. I don't remember how to shoot.

9.

I have completed on Nightmare, but that was more a test of trial-and-error and save-scumming than skill.

I'd say I middle out.

Being "good at doom" is a bit too vague. If the metric is ability to beat arbitrary difficult gameplay situations, is that with smart route planning or without foreknowledge? Does speed matter?, or perhaps consistent aptitude over long challenging maps? Your descriptions that accompany the 1-10 scale seem to mostly reflect familiarity with IWAD content, so I'm gonna go ahead and pick 7... I guess, seeing as I definitely don't have every enemy location memorized :p

I am extremely good at ZDaemon griefing, does that count?

I can be pretty good depending on how I am feeling.

Most likely a 7.5. I've kicked myself a collective ass once or thrice.

Is thrice a word?

4.

Few things are more embarrassing than jumping like a little girl while you're in the middle of explaining "that game you're playing all the time" to a relative watching you play.

I commented to my girlfriend the other day that it would be interesting if I was as good at Doom as most map makers assume I am. I am at a 4.5 on a good day.

I never finished nightmare, but I've Done the original Doom on UV, and in fact that's all I play on for Doom/UDoom. Doom II though I still manage on HMP.

So, I consider myself decent. I can DM well when I'm in the mood/zone, and I can sometimes give other more seasoned players a run for their money.

Finished half of Plutonia, but it was mostly save scumming and trial and error. So yah, decent. Maybe 4, 5, 6 or 7, though it has been a while actually, so maybe lower.

too good unfortunately, the game was a lot more exciting when beating any map without saves was an important event in life

I'd say I'm a 6. I can handle myself but not a top DM player. I really struggle with Nightmare. Probably could do a no BFG run but never tried it. So maybe a 6.5?

Probably 6. Somehow my mapping abilities are higher than my gameplay abilities and I end up making maps I can't beat.

I'll settle on being a 6. Have never played Doom on anything less than the Ultra-Violence difficulty, even way back when I first started playing. I'm not that great at Doom though, but I play a nice defensive style. With some raging.
