To be fair, when I was in fifth grade, a kid flipped out and threw some desks over before ditching the room. Granted it was a private school in a fairly nice area, and it wasn't Milwaukee, where I would keep a gun for any grade level. Inner city schools are not nice places now days, for a variety of reasons.

If they got their way and the government actually mandated teachers to carry a side-arm, I wonder how many days it be until a jumpy teacher lands a bullet into one of their students, or until one of the kids manages to grab it for themselves. I say days, because I doubt that it would ever be more than a week until such an inevitable disaster occurs.

Actually when I was only in 2nd grade something horrible would happen everyday from kids throwing chairs at the windows to kids running away during recess. There even was once a 4th grader, yes a 4th grader who got so mad one day and started ripping posters of the wall, flipping desks ripping papers from the teachers desk. It got so bad that the police actually had to come and threatened to drag her through the cafeteria and cuff her in front of the whole school!

There's a kernel of sense to this, even if it's a very gloomy way of looking at life. How do you teach children that nice things aren't handed to them on a silver platter, and when they get older they'll have to work for them? By not capitulating to their every demand, and ignoring the tears and tantrums when they're denied that toy or bar of chocolate in the store. Tough love and all that. Similarly, being mistreated at school can instill an important life lesson - grow a backbone, or else people with a different kind of insecurity to yours will forever be harassing you.

And show it at thier families and friends just to show how pathetic they are.
They think they are better, but aren't because they don't have the courage to kill a human.
They lack discipline!

Look, I think most of us are angry about what happened, but that's just fucking crazy. My response is instead to demand that the system and rules should be changed, not engage in abduction and torture. Not only is that even worse than what the bullies, school staff and courts did, but would also be very counterproductive in having our position against this appear favorable.

I'm not surprised that the kid got slammed rather than his bullies, I've had a few cases of similar bullshit throughout my high school experience, where apparently defending yourself (ok, I'll admit I would get pretty rough in my self defense) is going to have you taking the brunt of the punishments that get dealt out by your principal. They want you to sit there and be the victim. However, now there's school security guards (at least in south-eastern michigan)that won't hesitate to jump into a fight and break it up rather than the teachers reluctantly (if even) getting ivolved. Although sometimes even the security guards are no match for some of these crazy students.

Hopefully some family and friends cheered the kid up. I haven't looked back at high school since I graduated, save for a few cool teachers and friends I still talk to.
