The most overrated games you've played

I'll agree that Halo 4 is not good though. I do like Halo 3 though.

I love Halo, Reach is still the game with my most multiplayer kills (over 30k kills) and that is probably why I hate 4 so much.

Although I have got like 11k MP kills in Halo 4, very easy to do that.

EDIT: For those who have a Halo Waypoint account (which I think you get by just having a gamertag): https://www.halowaypoint.com/en-us/players/the%20evilution#

I learned today AAA is a score rating of 87% or higher rather than a big budget game.

I've always liked GTA 3 and Vice City better than San Andreas. Mario 64 was great way back when I played it.

Counter-Strike has never been fun.

Starcraft 2's single player campaign sucks compared to the original(s). Multiplayer isn't much fun either, to be honest. Haven't checked out Heart of the Swarm yet, but will probably not.

Is Dues Ex overrated? I can't say I never played it properly.

The combat is horrible, the voice acting is bad, the graphics were mediocre even back when it came out, and the AI is blind, but I still had a blast with it. Human Revolution felt worse in a sense, because it's basically a modernized version of the original that also adds horrible mechanics like a cover system and hacking minigames, plus they got rid of JC and added Adam Jensen, yet another edgy deep-voiced male protagonist with a beard/scruff that we see in so many action games these days. The improved AI makes it impossible to pull off the stuff you could do in DX1, and by modern standards the gunplay is bad. Oh, did I mention the maddening yellow tint on everything?

I'd say the ARMA series is overrated. Sure, it has the potential to be the ultimate military simulator, but the optimization and engine are horrible, the movement is clunky as can be, the inventory system is confusing, there are absolutely pointless key bindings (open map and close map being separate keys is a good example) and most people who don't play a minigame and actually play PvP or PvE mission use at least 6 mods to make it playable. The community also praises it as if it's the best tactical shooter ever made. Most of these problems also translate over to DayZ, too, which has its own host of problems, like how 99% of the community shoots on sight and you spend 5 hours running around trying to find a weapon or food, and end up either finding drain cleaner and a rotten kiwi, or get shot from a mile away when you get within 1000m of a town.

The most overrated games I've played Is probably most of Rare's games, Banjo Kazooie and all. While I found Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie to be fun, I never really bothered going through the entire thing, the only Rare game I did go through was Conker's Bad Fur Day, It's still one of my all-time favorites from them.

Super Mario 64 can be applauded for its sandbox-y layouts and overall ambition, but it controls so poorly and the camera is so shitty that it kinda kills the experience. Plus, I find some platformers can feel awkward in 3D, or at least 3D where thre's a lot of freedom of movement. Spyro came out a couple years after SM64 and to me it was a far superior product.

I feel like Mario Sunshine in turn destroys Spyro, but that's because they worked out the camera after Mario64. I don't think the camera is as bad as people say it is, other than a very few select parts, everyone is just used to the full rotation camera these days. The angles it provides never gave me much issue, though.

The n64 controller gets bagged out a lot, but I feel like it's not that bad. The idea was that there were 3 different ways to hold the controller depending on the game, and that's why the likes of goldeneye and doom64 have customizable controls. You held it like an 'snes controller' for fighting games, and so on. Obviously the playstation controller and basically everything after that generation ended up much better, but it was an interesting turn from the norm.

BioShock Infinite

Infinite is one of those games I'd rather watch someone else play than play myself. Combat just didn't appeal to me, it felt far too arena-based (said the ZDoom ACS arena trap pimp :P) and the finale was a pain in the arse.

Crysis. I don't know why, but it just didn't hold my attention once I got over the idea of ballistic deforestation.

Grand Theft Auto IV. Suffers from the Bioshock Infinite issue mentioned above. As a massive GTA fan, I enjoyed it overall, but unlike all the others, I've found it almost impossible to go back to. Every time I sit down and make an effort, I'm fine right up until Roman calls me up to go bowling and I remember why I stopped playing it in the first place. No other GTA game has taken me as long to finish.

I couldn't ever get into GTA 4 for how "real" it was. It just felt dull and a departure from the previous three or two games. I think a lot of people had a problem with it beyond how high the reviewers marked it.

GTA4 bored me and I generally really didn't like it. Ballad of Gay Tony was much better and felt more like what GTA4 was supposed to be.

This is one thing i absolutely can not agree with. To me it was one of the first games in many years to amaze me with its gameplay and artistic style... even though it was a complete Ghost in the Shell ripoff.

If I haven't mentioned it already Shank. Wow what a one trick pony. Having all the weapons and combos unlocked from the start made it get dull really fast. Other games just do it better, but at least the game looks great and that's more important than anything else.

With Metroid being overrated... time hasn't been kind to it. I played it since I was little and it was awesome, but overly difficult. Painfully tedious to regain health. Thankfully the remake pretty much erases the original game.

The Sims... yeah you need to be a certain demographic to get into it. I was into the first two, but then I grew out of it. The first one was awful and pointless and the second one made goals so at least it felt more like a game less like a fish tank. I really need to have goals in games.

Half Life
A bland game that everyone else loved for whatever reason.

Painkiller
A game for people who are too stupid to play Doom.

Bio shock
A game for people who are too stupid to play System Shock 2.

Bio Shock Infinite
A game for people who will endure anything for the sake of a decent story with an interesting narrative.

Almost every main Pokémon game I've played. I retired in 2011 (but still play the Mystery Dungeon games occasionally), and don't regret it.

Both Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask.

Neither of them are bad games by any means, I just don't think either one of them is the best the Zelda series has to offer.

Considering the ridiculous kind of hype the game received at the time (one magazine even rating it above a perfect score), Donkey Kong Country still reigns for me. A pretty by the numbers platformers with cookie cutter level design, frustrating sub-par collision detection and uninspired boss encounters. It's the most extreme example I can think of when it comes to being blinded by sheer graphical spectacle.

I disagree. I don't think it's nearly as overrated as people make it out to be. It was praised more than it needed to be for a while, but not anymore.

I thought the level design was fine. I'm not sure why you think the collision detection is poor, I thought it worked alright, then again I've played the game since childhood. I agree that it's not that great of a game though, it's surprisingly short and can be beaten in roughly an hour once you get the hang of things. DKC2 fixed my gripes with the first game and expanded on the gameplay and presentation ten fold.

I can agree that Rare's games on the N64 were not perfect. I love Banjo Kazooie, but I didn't like Tooie as much. It's not as accessible as the first game and the game requires a lot of backtracking which can be tedious with the large scale of the level design. It's no where near as bad as Donkey Kong 64 though, fuck that was awful, and this is coming from someone who liked that game as a child. I still need to play Conker's Bad Fur Day proper.

I agree with you here. I retired after Gen 3. I tried playing Pokemon Diamond, but I got bored and gave up half-way.

I still play Yellow every 2-3 years and managed to get fairly far along in Gold. Bought Leaf Green and that was cool but the battery in it doesn't save anymore.

I've seen the more recent Pokemon games and they just look like the same thing but with dumbass art. Not sure what happened there, just ran out of ideas I guess.

I'm lucky Pokemon was after my time. Before that was Final Fantasy Legend 1 & 2 and Dragon Quest Monsters. Similar RPG games that let you change members of your party by consuming meat or well capturing more in the case of DQM.

I too stopped playing, back in 2008. just go rather boring since it's more or less the same game most of the time. I ended up giving my games to my friends who were more obssessed with it than I ever was.

I think thats pushing it a little and
I like System shock. But we have to admit thay SS2's controls were clunky as hell.

System shock 2 is something people endure for an amazing story.

The game blew people away when it was first released. Now people just dont feel or experience the same warmth or impact because it is in "retrospect".

I played Half-Life 2 when it was released, and in that time it seemed that everyone was saying it was the best FPS ever. There was a massive hype arround it.

I enjoyed HL2. It had a nice and novel setting, some memorable characters. Enemies were varied and weapons were okay. The gravity gun was a cool addition and they used it to realise some nice puzzles and it also made the combat more diverse. What they did with the Gravity Gun was the noteworthy innovation of the game.
Apart from that, the level design was too linear, the driving sections were okay but nothing new, the silent protagonist jokes worked against immersion and there were other small flaws. I am not saying that HL2 is a bad game, but it isn't the best FPS ever. It was overrated.

I wound up selling my unopened Pearl and Heart Gold games for some cold hard cash.

At least I won't ever forget my Garchomp (whom I appropriately nicknamed "Arsenal")... he was awesome.

No More Room in Hell. Best thing it has going from it after reading all the positive reviews is that its free. No one ever elaborates why its a good or great game. It just is... because its free and has zombies. Playing it is messy and rigid. All the worst of the Source engine. Invisible walls, emcumberment, friendly fire, a gamble between death match and cooperative play. Laughably overpowered grenades that kill things outside of what looks like the blast radius.

Broforce. I was hoping for a fun, modern, run and gun shooter, but instead I got a game that glorifies American violence, stupidity, war, patriotism, bros, xenophobia, and everything else that kinda irritates me, and I live in the USA.

I'm PC, bro, so it's cool for me to hate this game.

I think it glorifies 80s action movies, but yes those things all glorify everything you specified.

I honestly never got through the first level of Banjo Kazooie, It just didn't Interest me too much, I might get Into playing It some day, but right now I'm just a fanboy for Conker.

GoldenEye 64:
A horribly overrated game that only has a place in the nostalgia goggles of so many because it was one of very few console FPS games at the time that had 4P split-screen. You know, never mind that it looked like you were watching a fucking slideshow when you actually did get four players in for a session. Not a crap game, just not the amazing product it's all cracked up to be when you actually decide to take a look at things. But then maybe I was just spoiled by all that LAN shit that I was able to play before GE64 was even a thing.

Mega Man 2:
Good game, not going to deny this (it's actually a NES favourite of mine), but the way that people sing the praises of this like it's the flawless pinnacle of the series just makes me laugh. Yes it's a better game than the first, but so it bloody well should be! There are some design choices in this entry (Metal Blade, Boobeam Trap, etc.) which stick out as huge errors of judgement on the developer's part.

Resident Evil 4:
Oh no, the sacred RE cow! Next time someone asks you "where did it all go wrong for RE?", you can wear a massive smirk on your face as you point toward this, and show them the first RE game to let loose with action-focused gameplay and cutscenes loaded with QTE nonsense, while getting rid of most 'Survival Horror' aspects in the blink of an eye (the box even fucking admits as much!)*. You know, instead of just being a lazy bandwagon cunt and blaming RE5 and RE6 like another mindless drone who has probably not even played anything in the series after RE4 (with both of those games actually being underrated IMO, but that's another topic).

And no, I'm not at all saying that RE4 is a bad game. Because it really isn't. I bought it on release, and I still love it. But it is overrated (I found it to be disappointingly easy, for one) and seems to be forgiven for way too many dumb things. Such as obnoxious QTE moments, unbelievably OP & spammable melee attacks (a problem which carried on into RE5 and actually got worse), a campaign which started to outstay its welcome by the third act (especially after the exceptionally well-designed second area), and any moment which involves escorting that fucking ganado-hugging mong Ashley around.

(*Although it didn't start the 'Continue' option on death; you can probably blame Code: Veronica for that.)

Have to agree on this, even though this isn't exactly a well-known game the Steam reviews manage to conjure up wild dreams of zombie survival which the game itself was never going to live up to. I do like NMRiH when playing co-op with friends (in my experience, general pubbies are fucking scum when it comes to anything requiring actual teamwork), but it's by no means the great zombie apocalypse game that the reviews would have you think... some aspects are actually pretty goddamn fucking horrible! Zombies manage to slap at you from 10ft away, inexplicably latch on to you like they've got hands made of superglue. Player control feels stiff and awkward. Melee actions/weapons are way too effective (just shove and smash, shove and smash...). Runners are gamebreaking bullshit. ZOMBIES RESPAWN ENDLESSLY WITH NO FUCKING 'SAFE' RADIUS AROUND THE PLAYER. Seriously, I've had the fuckers repopulate a street I'm standing in. Zombies resembling Bill Cosby with the speed of Usain Bolt just fucking materialise right in front of me and give me super-ebola before I can call the game a filthy cheating cunt.

End essay.

Destiny.

Fuck you.

So much this. I read the Game Informer article on it and thought to myself, "It's fucking Bungie. All they have in their pedigree is games ripped off of other people's concepts. Sure, Halo LAN parties with friends was fun but at the end of the day, they're a shit company." And sure enough I was right, although the alpha/beta gave me enough of that LAN party nostalgia that I figured even with all the evidence of them fucking up, it'll still be fun for a romp through. Yup, fucked myself on that one. And then gave them another chance with The Taken King only to find that for every one mechanic fixed, they broke the game in three more ways.

What's even worse than the hype this game had is, in light of overwhelming evidence that the original game we were supposed to get was cut up and Frankensteined together into a confusing pile of shit, broken gameplay, and money grabbing DLC, people still defend this game as if it wasn't one giant corporate cock up. Video game communities as of late has generally been filled with toxic idiots anyway, thus why I only lurk here.

Honestly Bungie should've been sued to hell and back over this one, but those fucking TOS everyone has these days prevents that. And this is coming from me, a person that doesn't believe in frivolous lawsuits.

Oh well. "A fool and his money are soon parted..." ...so got what I deserved.

Coincidentally I started with a later gen and started working my way backwards because there was bit extra charm to the older titles that made them more enjoyable, imo. In a way, whatever gen that isn't the current one may be underrated, as they all seems to be rather easily eclipsed by the next one.
