Other games that use Doom's palette

Recommended Posts

Huh, never heard of Quiver. The sprites look cheap, but the textures don't look terrible. Is it a fun game?

HACX doesn't really count since it was literally just a Doom mod, but I'm surprised to see two other games with the exact same palette.

Its an IWAD now. So it should count.

I deliberated about including HACX. Since it has 100% graphics and so isn't using Doom's palette merely to remain compatible with Doom's graphics, I decided to include it.

Pavera: I've never played Quiver. From this YouTube video it seems quite similar to Doom, though I noticed models for some item pickups. I think one of the lift sounds comes from Doom. The music is lovely:

You can find the shareware version of Quiver on a few sites, including archive.org's DOS game collection.

The FAQ is a thing of beauty:

Q: Why is the CD player a TSR?
A: Because that's how Mike did it. Mike is a case, but he's the only
   programmer we have.

Q: Where's the giblets?
A: Great googlymoogly! Mike forgot the giblets!

Q: How come my joystick doesn't work?
A: Because there is no joystick support in Quiver.

Q: Why is there no joystick support?
A: Because Mike doesn't have a joystick.

Q: Why doesn't Mike have a joystick?
A: Because he sat on the one we gave him. He said it was too hard to
test the calibration code while squirming around in his chair.

Q: Why can't I beat Quiver?
A: Because you suck. Even Mike can beat Quiver, and he has that joystick
   problem.

Q: Why is the mouse such a pain to learn to use?
A: Because the whole 3D-action-game-mouse-thing is probably a sinister
plot started by a famous game designer from Texas, who just HAS to
be a lefty with the reflexes, eye-hand coordination, and ruthlessness
of a preying mantis. Or, it could just be that it takes time to learn.

Q: What kind of technology does Quiver use?
A: Mike says it uses a cross differential transrectal condenser array.
We're not sure if that's true, because we know that Mike is constantly
distracted by that clicking in his chair.

Q: Why was Quiver programmed and designed by only one person?
A: Because Mike is developmentally challenged. He kept beating up the
other nerds and taking their keyboards.

Q: Why are some of the cheatcodes so obnoxious?
A: Take a wild guess.

Q: How come you didn't do this, that, or the other thing like so-and-so?
A: Mike didn't want to. He said it took too much time away from his blocks
   and army men.

Q: Is everything Mike's fault?
A: Yes.

Q: Why should I care about Quiver?
A: You shouldn't care about Quiver. You should care about buying Quiver.
Mike is expensive to maintain, you know, with the daycare and all...

Q: Will there be a sequel to Quiver?
A: Yes, providing that Mike survives the joystick surgery.

Quiver was also the working name for Half-Life before they revamped it.

So, Quiver did get a sequel, and Mike = Gabe Newell?

As a pun to Quake?

There was no way they would release it with that name :D

Ah, ok, I made the more obvious connection because it was based on the Quake engine.

I hope this isn't a bad bump but there's a Brazilian *Or Spanish?* game called OSARIUM that uses the Doom color palette. And it even steals some textures from doom also!

That game is also interesting in that it uses some kind of slightly modified WAD format also.

Oh, lord. Quiver. I recall that one not faring well in the review sections...

"a famous game designer from Texas, who just HAS to be a lefty with the reflexes, eye-hand coordination, and ruthlessness of a preying mantis"

Heh, must have been written back when John was the most feared multiplayer gamer on the planet methinks. Brings back some memories and a chuckle. =)

...as a side-note Redneck Rampage uses the Duke Nuke'm palette. The Xatrix artists & management debated whether to change it, but the benefit of using temporary stand-in assets from Duke during early development trumped the potential artistic benefit of altering the colors...

Meh, it's not, I've worked on some Duke level, sprite and texture conversions and the palette is different, had to convert 'em to Truecolor .png so they don't look horrible with Doom's palette.

As I understand it, and don't hold me to this, I could be wrong, but I believe Duke Nukem is one of these.

That'd be a no. Duke had its own original palette.

That's in Spanish. You don't see those everyday.

Has anyone managed to crack the Osarium BXB data file format yet? Looks similar to WAD in XWE to me. I tried adding IWAD text string at the very beginning (not overwrite) in the file with XWE, which made SLADE recognize it as WAD format, however refuses to open complaining about it being invalid or something because of lump 0.
