I'm on a Hackintosh I built a couple years ago. I occasionally run into some odd issues with it, but nothing insurmountable (or any worse than the problems I've had with official Apple hardware!) In general it's been very stable, dependable, and fast.

4.00 GHz i7-4790k 4 core CPU
16 GB RAM
GeForce GTX 760, and one 1920x1080 display
250 GB SSD (for system and applications)
1 TB 7200rpm HDD (for storage)
3 TB WD MyBook (for automated nightly backup)

Software:
Clover bootloader
Mac OS 10.10.2 (I ought to get around to upgrading it one of these days)
Windows 7 Home Premium (running in a VM, mainly for Doom editing)

Audio/MIDI:
M-Audio BX5 Monitors (Not too satisfied with these -- I've only had them for a couple years and one of them has entirely stopped producing treble, need to get a replacement)
Sony MDR-V600 Headphones (These have served me astonishingly well for over a decade now!)
Alesis V49 MIDI controller

Simply by not wasting my money on pointless things. See it this way: I paid €1000 for my current system 5.5 years ago and €200 more for upgrades since then. That's roughly €200 per year, or €17 per month. That's really not that hard to keep aside.

Many people spend more on beer and tobacco.

idk how it is in the EU, but one could even get the cost written off their taxes, if they use it for their business.

My friend did that with a music production studio he made for his small-business.

Low budget laptop:
CPU: crap
RAM: shit
GPU: what?

Which translates to...

CPU: Intel Pentium N3540 Quad-core, 2.16GHz
RAM: 4GB
Integrated Intel rubbish instead of a GPU, at least it's one of those more recent ones that's only like 6 years behind everything else rather than about 50.
OS: Windows 8.1
HD: 1TB
Screen: 1366x768

Not exactly wonderful for gaming. Most of the stuff in my steam library doesn't even launch, including RtCW even though that used to work fine o_o
In terms of first person games, it can run Source engine stuff smoothly in fullscreen with some reduced graphics settings, and not a whole lot else from this millenium :P

I can at least do more important things though, which is all that matters ultimately. FL Studio sometimes gives me a bit of hassle on busier pieces of music - there was one where I couldn't even listen to the mix before rendering it because it was overloading memory and cpu and becoming a distorted cacophony due to that, but generally no real issues.

Current two year old build

CPU: AMD-8350, 8-core, OC'ed to 4.4GHz
GPU: RX 390X, 8GB VRAM, 1150MHz clock I think? It's an MSi model
RAM: 16GB @ 1600MHz
Mobo: Asus Crosshair V, Formula Z AMD 990FX
Case: Deepcool Kendomen Mid tower

And I have 2TB of hard drive spread over 5 drives, 1TB main drive, two aux 320GB drives (one for video recording), and two 240GB SSDs for game installs.

Considering upgrades to the new gen later this year or next year perhaps.
