question about textures/flats using XWE

Recommended Posts

XWE noob askes:

How do you go about taking textures/flats/skies out of wad files and tranfering them to maps using XWE?

Is there a site or page that describes the process?

I had the same question in my other thread, but nobody answered me.
I'm glad you posted this,
but what would make it even better is if someone who knew would reply.

The help file is tiny,
and it doesn't tell you how to add a BMP as a texture,
or how to replace the sky texture.

Replacing a sky texture
Lets say you want to replace the sky texture from episode 1. In XWE it's called rsky1.
*Make a new sky texture and call it "rsky1.gif" or "rsky1.bmp". You have to call it "rsky1" like the original.
*Open your wad in XWE
*click "entry"
*Then choose either "replace" or "load" depending on whether or not your wad already contains an entry named "rsky1"

You can extract files from a wad by selecting one, clicking "entry" and clicking "save as".

When you click Save As on a texture,
it doesn't save a BMP, it saves the whole texture file called lmp or whatever.
How can you save just one texture, edit it, and replace it?
Let's say the sky from Doom2... ?
This is my first PWAD, by the way.
I don't really know how the textures or patches work.

I know what you're doing wrong now.

You want to save out the PATCHES not the Textures.

-- A texture is made up of one or more patches.

-- A patch is an actual image.

You need to select the patch and do a Save As, then you'll be saving a bmp.

This is a decent XWE tutorial made by Scarekrowe. http://www.freewebs.com/wadsayer/xwe.htm
People who write programs are different than those of us that use them, so most help files are crap we can't understand.

Don't blame Csabo! Thank him! for the awesome piece of free and very useful software!

The help file/documentation could be better. Scarekrowe's is a nice one, but it's a bit outdated now: i.e. to import sprites, you don't need to do all that anymore, just double-click Sprites at the bottom and select your images. It loads them all and adds S_START/S_END. Same for patches, except that not only adds the markers, but also adds the entry to PNAMES and creates a TEXTURE.

I suspect that a lot of the problems re: using XWE come from not knowing the Doom part of things, e.g. how to name a sprite so that it shows up, etc.; not actually about how to use XWE itself. There are a lot of good documentation on Wad editing in general.

Anyways, if anyone has questions, use this forum, I'm here.
