Sure is.

But since GZDoom can do real 3D floors, why would you go to that much effort and risk such a significant drop in frame rate?

Stop suggesting that voxel models should be converted to or rendered as polygons. That defeats its entire purpose.

In this thread I've seen some great-looking voxel models. What we need now is someone who can introduce voxel rendering for (pick-up) items only, like Build / Shadow Warrior have. The source for Build is available, so you can glean some insight there. Use a basic Prboom or such port as the code base.

Then we have a working engine with voxel pickup items, and your first milestone. After this we can look into voxel models for actual monsters.

But, so far no coder has come forward who will look into this matter. so no matter how many great voxel models you crank out now, it won't matter. The efforts stops, and dies, right there. My best bet would be to convince / pester / beg / bribe Fraggle to look into this, but I understand he's busy with other stuff.

Actually, if they manage to finish most or all the items and monsters, that would greatly move coders to add them to software engines (expecially the ones with mouselook, like ZDoom and Eternity.)

Yeah...if this is fully completed, then it could be the start of a new Source Port - VZDoom (ZDoom with Voxels).

I started a small thread to keep track of who's doing what. This is to make sure that no one does the same item twice like I already managed to do with the clip and the shells, which GhostPilot had already finished, heh.

If anyone else wants to help out, feel free to post there and claim an item. Just keep in mind that the program isn't all that great and you'll need a reasonably large amount of memory to work on bigger items. You also have to enter the colour values manually.

there's an artist on twitter who is working on a mod that includes extremely faithful recreations of the monsters

they even streamed the process for making the doomguy

The link in the first post was outdated.  Fixed now.  But yeah, I've been pretty lazy and I doubt there will be any further progress unless someone else offers to take the lead.
