JackDoom [announced, teaser released, project on hold]

Recommended Posts

JackDoom is a project I've had under work for quite a while now: It's something I've mapped for when I needed to take break from other Doom things, so despite that it's been ongoing for over a year not much of has been done so far. I had intended to get more involved with it after Jade Earth's release, but my real life got recently turned upside down, so I'm forced to put this thing on hold for the time being. So, because of that, I decided to release two of the almost-done maps as teasers. :)

In short, JackDoom will be an episodic set of short-medium length action-intense maps. Each episode will have its own distinct theme while limiting myself to stock textures only (save for skies). The maps that I'm putting out now are from one of the later episodes (called Stellar Suicide), so they are rather hard, and there's no difficulty levels yet. I hope at least the masochists among you enjoy. :)

I've played a tiny bit of this, and I have to say I'm really enjoying the gameplay so far. I love that first combat situation where you use Revenant sniper fire to wipe out the demons.

What are the engine requirements for this thing?

Some fdas. Got pretty far near the end of each, but couldn't finish them. I think they were just a little too long, heh. A few problems you might notice in the demos, like how abusable a certain pillar in map02's RL path is.

In general I thought the gameplay was nice but a bit set-pieceish, felt like I was traveling along a string of arenas. Not exactly a bad thing, but it could be off-putting for others. Overall look was nice and consistent, good job there. Hope real life calms down soon so you can finish these.

@myk: Boom with sky transfers.

@AB: Thanks for the demos, I'll check them out when I get a chance. Set-piece is the name of the game this time, these maps aren't supposed to be for everyone, so if someone out there doesn't like set-piece gameplay, he's free to play through E1 again instead of playing these. :)
