NOVA: The Birth - v1.1 release now on idGames!

Recommended Posts

Thought I would make a second map for this project. Open to thoughts really.

Fairly linear long map set in hell. I included extra bonuses for the easier difficulties, I might take some monsters out later.

I've decided that the best thing to do would be to do a "touch-up" on Sewage Processing, instead of trying to drastically add to it. I think the level is a decent length for early in the WAD, so what I'm going to do is fix things that I think could be improved.

Also, I'd really appreciate it if anyone with some extra time would go over my map carefully and list ANYTHING that bugs them about it. Remember, this is a map for early in the WAD, so it SHOULD be a little on the easy side.

EDIT: Here's a slightly updated version: http://www.mediafire.com/?89fxtjbobdv9yep

Just checking in to prove I have not lost interest in this project. I will be taking a look at new levels and updates whenever I get time. In the meantime, everyone please continue with your works! =)

Again, not sure if it is suitable for this wad, but I've finished another midi.

This one, again, not an original work. It's a transcript of the theme music of turok 2's level 6. It loops pretty well, and is a fairly long track, so it might work well for a rather long level. Doesn't really match with a hell level very much, but might go well with a large techbase with lots of action.

Next, I'm going to try to make an original track for once, and maybe finish up my second map.

PaulD, can you write a creepy, quiet midi track for my map Hush?

Sure, could you send me a copy of what you have got so I can see what kind of tone/mood you need me to go for?

Thanks, I really appeciate this. I will need a short time to get the map past its basic alpha state, but basically you can sneak through much of the map because you are often surrounded and you get attacked very viciously if you make any noise. There's a dark base and a graveyard overlooking an abandoned city. The map has been on the back burner while I work on the Panophobia maps, but I'll throw something together.

Wrote a maybe titlepic track:

Then again, since we haven't really established a particular tone or theme for the megawad, this might not be a very fitting song.

Still putting off working on my map... haha.

i heard this song and well, i don't think that this one may fit the titlepic, maybe a level with a "lot of action" like an UAC base or some space station

Strifeguy and anyone else who wants to join this project is free to start making maps and collaborating in this project as they wish. Unfortunately I don't have much time at the moment to offer a lot of feedback but I'm sure you can all continue fine without me until I get some spare time to help out. Good luck with the maps and midis everyone.

Updates to my map, Hush:

* Successfully converted it from ZDoom->Hexen to Boom compatible format. (I actually find ZDoom easier to work with once you know what you're doing because it offers almost complete control over everything you put in the map.)

* Received a cool music track for the map from Paul D, thanks!

* Not sure if this is going to be 100% kills to be honest. The whole point is that the player is outmatched from the start and stealth is the only way through unless you want a proper beating. I don't think I've ever played a stealth map before. If you were given the tools to kill all the monsters, you'd be over-equipped for the maps that follow - unless this map appears quite late in the megawad, for example at the end of the usual Earth-themed episode.

If this map does come at the end of the Earth themed maps, I could explain the large number of high-level demons by saying this is their foothold in the material realm and they're gathering on one of our planets for an invasion.

Sneaking past them and blowing shit up at their end could be your mission, trapping the invasion force on our side and causing problems for the demons in their rear areas (oo-er) so a human army can mobilise to fight the invasion force. Or something.

SCREENIES TO FOLLOW - I've expanded the "cityscape" view and added a graveyard, and I've created a nightmare of HOMs.

Here's a midi I extracted from the game Dune 2 (no claim of authorship).

It honestly doesn't loop very well, but I found it too cool to pass up.

@MajorRawne:

Maybe you could have a weapons/ammo cache somewhere near the end of the level- provided the level isn't too linear, this would mean the player still has to be careful getting through the enemy horde, but will be able to deal with them later on.

Also, you should remember that many players won't start your level with a pistol start, so it might be easier than it seems originally.

Hey everyone.

Just letting you know that I haven't forgotten this project, even though I haven't playtested in a while. I've been busy with work a lot, plus I've turned my focus to mapping as well as trying to keep the /newstuff queue from getting horrendously long.

Hopefully I'll find some time in the near future to test a few of the maps submitted to the project, but probably not for another week or two.

Shouldn't be a problem man, this isn't particularly active at the moment.

Speaking of which, I finally made some progress on my second map+ fixed some bugs.

Be nice to see some more feed back on my already-surprisingly-old submission :)

Actually, while I'm nagging - what ever happened to that 9-10 map third alpha release? That was meant to be on it's way over a month ago :P

*BUMP*

How are things going? Has anything been done with this project lately?

So I've been keeping half an eye on this thread and wondering about possibly joining in, seeing as I've only just started mapping earlier this year and that there's still a lot of stuff that I want to learn - are there still spots open to join?

I would say yes, not many maps have been made for this so far so feel free. By looks of things this wad could need a little inspiration to get things kick started again :)

If others are willing to come back to this project then I'll gladly help in getting it back up and running again. I was actually planning on sorting out the levels I've received so far and starting it back up myself with a new alpha release. Might get onto that this week if possible!

Guess this means I'll be working on my long-awaited Sensorium map again as initially drafted by Alwaysdoomed. I was almost finished a few months ago when commitments got in the way and now I've had a break.. I might just finish the bloody thing this time round!

an_mutt, welcome to the project! Feel free to post your progress in screenshots as you go and send us any maps you want us to review for inclusion in the wad. We'll gladly give feedback. :)

I haven't worked on my map in a long time because I thought the project was dead. I haven't gotten any feedback, so I'm not sure where to start.

@ Stygian - I haven't playtested through your level properly but I've done a quick run-through and it actually looks pretty nice... and difficult. It will most likely be one of the later levels of the wad. Once I compile everything into yet another updated alpha wad you'll get more feedback as people seem to be more willing to playtest those than individual maps sometimes.

I will have a look at my map (The Prisoner) again and try and make it look nicer and play a little better. As for the other map (Into The Supernova), after a bit of thought I shall scrap the map from this project, mainly as 1 map is enough from me and gives more people a chance to map for this project. I will stick the map in a mini-episode I'm making at the moment.

I would love to join this project making maps and music.
I'm not a very experienced mapper, I've only done a few speedmaps ( http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?q7o98frx2ddp7cu if you want to see I don't think they're worthy of a proper release) I would love to put a bit more effort into mapping.
Here are 2 midis I had sitting feel free to use them if you like.
http://www.mediafire.com/?qtatyrolkpft8tk - a metal song of sorts
http://www.mediafire.com/?v061x6yu0cbmv0b - fairly ambient thing
I'll start mapping tomorrow

Any update on Sacrament of Wilderness's progress?

Need to finish Sensorium before I can continue work on that one, but it is next on my list.

Welcome to the project nub_hat! I'll check out those midis and speedmaps in a second.

EDIT: Just looked at everything and enjoyed the midis. Map creation needs work though. Try putting as much time and work into making a single detailed level as you would an entire megawad and you could end up with something great!
